Refer to the pages indicated for more details. „ ACTIVITY REPORT The machine is factory-set to print an ACTIVI TY REPORT after every 20 transactions. You can also select whether to print this report manually or automatically. CODED SPEED DIAL TELEPHONE NO. LIST Lists the destination numbers and names registered for coded dial speed dialing. See “Printing the CODED SPEED DIAL TELEPHONE NO. LIST” on page 66 . The ACTIVITY REPORT is printed. „USER’S DATA LIST The USER’S DATA LIST enables you to confirm the current settings of your machine as well as the registered sender information (See “Registering Sender Information” on page 62 ). zPrinting the USER’S DATA LIST 1Press [FAX], then press [Menu]. 2Use [ ] or [ ] to select , then press [OK]. 3Use [ ] or [ ] to select , then press [OK]. The USER’S DATA LIST is printed. „TX REPORT Your machine can print a TX (transmission) REPORT after sending a document. You can set the machine to print every time it sends a document, or only when an error occurs. Alternatively, you can disable printing of a report. „ RX REPORT Your machine can print an RX (reception) REPO RT after receiving a document. You can set the machine to print every time it receives a docum ent, or only when an error occurs. Alternatively, you can disable printing of a report. 72Chapter 4Faxing „Before Sending Faxes The machine enables you to adjust the resolution and scan contrast to suit the type of document. zAdjusting the Image Quality (Fax Resolution) You can adjust the image quality (fax resoluti on) of the document you send. The higher the image quality, the better the output quality at the other end, but the slower the transmission speed. Adjust the image quality according to the type of document you are sending. 1Press [FAX], then press [Image Quality]. Important Color sending is available only when the recipient’s fax machine supports color faxing. Step 1 Load the document or photograph you want to send on the Platen Glass or in the ADF. Step 2 Adjust the fax resolution and scan contrast (See “Before Sending Faxes” on page 72). Step 3 Dial the recipients number using the numeric buttons or coded speed dialing (See “How to Use Coded Speed Dialing” on page 75 ). Step 4 When using the Platen Glass : Press [Color] or [Black], and proceed to step 5. When using the ADF : Press [Color] or [Black] to start sending, and omit steps 5 and 6. Chapter 4 73Faxing 2Use [ ] or [ ] to select the resolution. 3Press [OK]. zAdjusting the Scan Contrast Contrast is the degree of difference between li ght and dark. Increasing the contrast setting further blackens dark areas and whitens bright areas. Whereas decreasing the contrast setting reduces the difference between bright and dark areas. You can adjust the contrast between three gradations. 1Press [FAX], then press [Exposure]. 2Use [ ] or [ ] to select the contrast. Pressing [ ] decreases the density, and pressing [ ] increases the density. 3Press [OK]. „ Sending Methods There are three methods of sending faxes: zMemory sending z Manual sending z Sending from your computer This section explains how to use these methods. zSending from Your Machine (Memory Sending) 1Load the document on the Platen Glass or in the ADF. 2Press [FAX]. 3Adjust the settings for your document as necessary. STANDARD: Suitable for text-only documents. FINE: Suitable for fine-print documents. PHOTO: Suitable for photographs. Note When sending color faxes, selecting has the same effect as selecting . Important When sending a double-sided document, set t he document on the Platen Glass. You cannot scan double-sided document from the ADF. 74Chapter 4Faxing 4Dial the recipient’s number (DESTINATION NUMBER) using the numeric buttons or coded speed dialing. 5Press [Color] for color sending, or [Black] for black & white sending. z When the document was loaded on the Platen Glass: (1) When the following message is displayed, load the next page on the Platen Glass. If you have only one sheet of document to scan, press [OK]. (2) Press [Color] to send in color, or [Black] to send in black and white. Press the same button you pressed in step 5. z When the document was loaded in the ADF: The machine starts sending automatically after the document is scanned in. z Sending from Your Machine (Manual Sending) Use manual sending when you want to talk to t he recipient before sending a document, or if the recipient does not have a fax machine that can receive automatically. Note z To select the image quality (fax resolution), see “Adjusting the Image Quality (Fax Resolution)” on page 72 . z To select the scan contrast, see “Adjusting the Scan Contrast” on page 73 . Note For details on how to use coded speed dialing, see “How to Use Coded Speed Dialing” on page 75 . Important If you do not press the same button you pres sed in step 5, the machine does not start scanning. Important Color sending is available only when the recipient’s fax machine supports color faxing. Note zTo cancel sending before sending a fax, press [Stop/Reset]. z To cancel memory sending while sending a fax, follow any instructions on the LCD after pressing [Stop/Reset]. z If the document remains in the ADF after pressing [Stop/Reset] during sending a fax, press [OK]. The remaining document is automatically fed out. Important zIf you select in the when installing your machine, the manual sending is not available. Y ou need to execute the memory sending. For details on memory sending, see “Sending from Your Machine (Memory Sending)” on page 73 . z With manual sending, you cannot use the Platen Glass to send documents. z You will need to connect a telephone to your mach ine if you want to talk to the recipient before sending a document. Chapter 4 75Faxing 1Connect a telephone to your machine if you want to talk to the recipient before sending a document. 2Load the document in the ADF. 3Press [FAX]. 4Adjust the settings for your document as necessary. 5You can lift the handset if an answeri ng machine is connected to the machine. 6Dial the recipient’s number using the numeric buttons or coded speed dialing. 7Talk through the handset to the recipient. If you hear a high-pitched signal instead of the recipient’s voice, go to step 9. 8Ask the recipient to set recipient’s fax machine to receive faxes. 9When you hear a high-pitched signal, press [Color] for color sending, or [Black] for black & white sending. Then hang up the handset. zSending Faxes from Your Computer With your machine connected to your computer, you can send faxes from the computer. For details, refer to the FA X D r i v e r G u i d e. „How to Use Coded Speed Dialing Pre-registering fax numbers in coded speed dials enables you to dial them by just pressing [Coded Dial] and entering a two-digit code. 1Press [Coded Dial]. 76Chapter 4Faxing 2Use the numeric buttons to enter the two-digit code (00-39) assigned to the number you want to dial, then press [OK]. „ Redialing a Busy Number There are two methods of redialing: Ma nual redialing and Automatic redialing. zManual Redialing To redial the fax number last dialed with the numeric button, press [Redial/Pause]. zAutomatic Redialing When using memory sending to send a document and the recipient’s line is busy, your machine will redial the number after a specified interval. Customizing Automatic Redialing Settings You can customize the following settings: z You can specify whether or not your machi ne redials automatically by setting under to or . z You can specify the number of times the machin e redials by setting after is set to . z You can specify the time interval between r edialings by setting after is specified. „ Documents Stored in Memory z Printing the MEMORY LIST The machine can print a list of documents stored in memory (MEMORY LIST) showing the transaction number (TX/RX NO.), transaction mode, recipient name, number of pages, date, and transmission time of each document. This will help you select a document in memory you wish to delete or print. 1Press [FAX], then press [Menu]. Note z For details on memory sending, see “Sending from Your Machine (Memory Sending)” on page 73 . z To cancel manual redial ing, press [Stop/Reset]. Note zYour machine enables you to customize automa tic redialing settings to suit your needs. z To cancel automatic redialing, wait until t he machine starts redialing, then press [Stop/ Reset]. Follow the instructions on the LCD. z You can also delete the document from memory. For details, see “Printing or Deleting a Document in Memory” on page 77 . Note For details on the redialing settings, see “TX SETTINGS” on page 94. Caution If you disconnect the power cord, all the documents stored in memory are deleted. Send or print all the documents stored in memory you do not wish to lose before disconnecting the power cord.

(4) Use [ ] to select to print the first page only, or use [ ] to select to print all pages of the document. (5) Press [OK]. (6) To print another document, return to branch-step 2, or to finish printing, go to step 5. z If you select : (1) Press [OK]. (2) Use [ ] or [ ] to select the transaction number (TX/RX NO.) of the document you want to delete, or enter the number using the numeric buttons. (3) Press [OK]. (4) Use [ ] to select to delete document, or use [ ] to select not to delete the document. (5) Press [OK]. (6) To delete another document, return to branch-step 2, or to finish deleting, go to step 5. 5Press [Stop/Reset]. zChecking a Document’s Details in Memory If the machine was not able to print a received fax, as when paper or ink has run out or a paper jam has occurred, the fax is automatically stored in memory. When selecting a document in memory to be printed or deleted, you can check its details on the LCD as follows: Note zIf there are no documents stored in memory, the machine will switch to the standby mode after is displayed. z In step 2, you can also print this list from in of the FAX SETTINGS menu (See “PRNT REPORT/LIST” on page 93 ).
78Chapter 4Faxing (A) Transaction number (TX/RX NO.) zA transaction number between 0001 and 4999 is a document being sent. z A transaction number between 5001 and 9999 is a document being received. (B) Marks before the transaction number z No mark indicates a black & white document. z < > indicates a color document. z indicates a black & white document being sent or printed. z indicates a color document being sent or printed. Displaying Details of the Transaction Use [ ] or [#] to display the details (e.g. tr ansaction number, transaction time and fax number). „Special Dialing z Dialing through a Switchboard A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is an on-si te telephone switchboard. If your machine is connected through a PBX or other telephone switching system, you have to dial the outside line access number first, and then the number of the party you are calling. z Sending/Receiving Using ECM This machine is set to send/receive faxes in ECM (Error Correction Mode). Checking the sending and receiving condition at the sending end and the receiving end respectively, ECM automatically corrects errors caused by telephone line trouble. Receiving Faxes „Flow of Receiving Faxes The operation flow of receiving faxes is as follows: Note If you are unsure of the transaction number, print the MEMORY LIST (See “Printing the MEMORY LIST” on page 76 ). Note zIf the senders or receiver’s fax is not ECM-compatible, the fax will be sent/received in the standard mode. z You can also disable ECM sending/receiving (See “TX SETTINGS” on page 94).
