    Chapter 6 89Scanning Images
    Scanning Images
This section describes how to scan images.
    About Scanning Images
You can scan images from the machine into a computer, and save them in JPEG, TIFF, or Bitmap
format. Then you can process that data by using the supplied application software to create original
images. Furthermore, you can use the supplied OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to
convert scanned paper documents to text data.
    „ Before Scanning
Before scanning images, confirm as follows:
zAre the necessary software (MP Drivers and MP Navigator) installed?
If the software is not yet installed, refer to the Easy Setup Instructions.
z Does the document to be scanned meet the requirements for an original to set on the Platen
    Glass or in the ADF?
For details, see “Document Requirements” on page 19 .
z Is the machine connected to your computer correctly?
Make sure your machine and computer ar e correctly connected with the USB cable.

these application software were not insta lled and thus cannot be launched. To launch any
of the above application software from MP Navigator, perform the [Custom Install] once
    again to install them.
z ScanSoft OmniPage SE does not support Windows 98 first edition.

    Routine Maintenance
    Replacing an Ink Tank
When ink runs out, replace the ink tank. The machine will not print if the wrong type of ink tank is
used, or if it is installed in the incorrect position.
The machine uses the following ink tanks.
    Getting the Ink Level Information
You can check the ink tank status by the ink lamp di splay. Open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) of
the machine and check the ink lamp.

    ...Repeats
    When ink has run out:
The ink lamp flashes fast (about one second). Replace it with a new ink tank. ...Repeats
If an error message is displayed on the LCD, an ink tank error has occurred and the machine cannot
continue to print. See “An Error Message is Displayed on the LCD” on page 113 .
