Chapter 8 109Routine Maintenance 4Repeat step 3 two times. 5Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray, and open up and set the extension by pressing down the hollow on the front side. 6Load three or more of A4- or Letter-sized paper in the paper source you selected in step 2. 7Repeat step 3 three times. The sheet of paper is automatically fed in and then out of the machine. If there are no signs of improvement after performing three times, contact the Canon Customer Care Center. „ Cleaning the Interior of the Machine (Bottom Plate Cleaning) This section describes how to clean the interior of the machine. If the interior of the machine becomes dirty, paper printed onto by the mach ine may get dirty, so we recommend performing cleaning regularly. 1Press [ON/OFF] to turn on the machine, then remove any paper from the Auto Sheet Feeder. See “Turning on the Machine” on page 18 . 2Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray, and open up and set the extension by pressing down the hollow on the front side. 3Prepare a single sheet of A4- or Letter-siz ed plain paper. Fold it in half along the long edge. Unfold the paper, then load it in the Auto Sheet Feeder with the open side to the front. 4Start bottom plate cleaning. (1) Press [COPY]. (2) Press [Menu] repeatedly to select . (3) Use [ ] or [ ] to select , then press [OK]. The sheet of paper is automatically fed in and then out of the machine. Note Ensure that the Inner Cover is closed.

If the problem remains after performing cleaning again, the protrusions inside the machine may be stained. Clean them up. See “Cleaning the ADF” on page 108. „Cleaning the Protrusions inside the Machine If protrusions inside the machine are stained, wi pe ink off the protrusions using a swab or the like. Important z Even if the Cassette is selected as the paper source, paper will be fed from the Auto Sheet Feeder. z Do not perform any other operation while the bottom plate is being cleaned.

Chapter 9 113Troubleshooting When an error occurs in printing such as the printer is out of paper or paper jams, a troubleshooting message is displayed automatically. Take t he appropriate action described in the message. The message may vary depending on the version of your Windows operating system. If the Power Disconnects Unexpectedly The date and time setting on your device and all doc uments stored in memory will be deleted if there is a power failure or if you accidentally di sconnect the power cord. However user data and coded speed dialing settings will be kept. If the power disconnects, the following will apply: z You will not be able to send or receive faxes or make copies. z If a telephone is connected to the mach ine, you can receive voice calls. z Whether you are able to make voice ca lls or not depends on your telephone type. An Error Message is Displayed on the LCD An error message is displayed on the LCD, take the corresponding countermeasure described below. MessageAction CANNOT SCAN FROM ADF The document is loaded in the ADF when applying in [Enlarge/Reduce], and and in . Load the document on the Platen Glass when copying with in [Enlarge/Reduce], and and in . CHANGE PAPER TO The paper size setting is set to a size other than A4, letter or legal. Set the paper size setting to A4, letter or legal and load paper of the same size. CHECK CARTRIDGE U051 U052 Follow the directions given in the Easy Setup Instructions to install the Print Head. If the Print Head is already installed, remove the Print Head and reinstall it. If this error still remains, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact a Canon Customer Center. CHECK DOCUMENT No document in the ADF. Press [OK] to resolve the error, then operate again after loading documents.
114Chapter 9Troubleshooting CHECK INK U041The ink has run out (The lamp on the ink tank flashes). Replace the ink tank, and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover). If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the [OK] with the ink tank installed. Then printing can continue under the ink out condition. Replace the empty ink tank immediately after the printing. The machine may be damaged if printing is continued under the ink out condition. NoteIf multiple ink lamps are flashing red, check how fast they flash. Fast flashing (at about one second interval) indicates the ink is empty. Slow flashing (at about three second interval) indicates ink is low. For details on different flashing speeds, see “Getting the Ink Level Information” on page 98 . CHECK INK U071 U072 Possible causes are as follows: z Some ink tanks are not installed in place. z More than one ink tanks of the same color are installed. Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 98 . CHECK INK U130 An ink tank that was once empty is installed. Replace the ink tank. Printing under the situation may damage the Print Head. Canon shall not be liable for any machine malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks. If you want to continue printing with the refilled ink tank installed, press and hold the [Stop/Reset] for at least 5 seconds, and then release it. Using refilled ink tanks are memorized. * This operation will release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. CHECK INK U140 U043 Possible causes are as follows: z The ink tank may not be installed properly (The lamp on the ink tank is off). Install the appropriate ink tank. z The ink tank may not be compatible with this machine (The lamp on the ink tank is off). Install the appropriate ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 98 . CHECK INK U150 Ink tank errors have occurred (The lamp on the ink tank is off). Replace the ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 98 . CHECK PAGE SIZE The size of the page in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette and that specified in the page size setting are different. Load the correct page size or change the page size setting. Then press [OK]. CHECK PRINTER An error requiring servicing might have occurred. Turn OFF the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply. After a while, plug the power cord of the machine back in and turn ON the machine. If the same error occurs, contact a Canon Customer Care Center. MessageAction
Chapter 9 115Troubleshooting CLEAR DOC. [OK] STOP DOC CLR [STOP]Documents remain in the ADF. Press [OK] to eject documents and press [Stop/Reset] to stop ejecting. To continue scanning, operate on the application. The scanning from the ADF may not be supported depending on your application software. For details, contact the applications manufacturer. COOLING HEAD… During printing, the Print Head may have become too hot. Allow the machine to cool down. The machine will resume printing when it has cooled down. COVER IS OPEN You opened the Scanning Unit during an operation. Return the Scanning Unit to its original position. DEVICE IN USE CANNOT TURN OFF You are unable to turn OFF the machine with [ON/OFF] because the machine is performing an operation. The machine is performing an operation. Wait until the operation has finished, then turn OFF the machine. DOCUMENT IN ADF The document is jammed in the ADF. Remove the document page jammed in the ADF, then press [OK]. Operate again after resolving the error. See “Document Jams” on page 130 . DOCUMENT TOO LONG The document is too long or is jammed in the ADF. Remove the document page jammed in the ADF, then press [OK]. After resolving the error, make sure that the document you are loading meets the machines requirements before redoing the operation. See “Document Requirements” on page 19 . DUPLEX UNIT JAM The Duplexing Transport Unit is jammed. Clear the paper jam. Then load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or the Cassette, then press [OK]. HEAD ALIGNMENT ERROR zA4/Letter-sized paper is not loaded on the Auto Sheet Feeder. Press the [OK] on the machine to clear the error, then load a few sheets of A4/Letter-sized paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Automatic head alignment cannot be performed using paper from the Cassette. For automatic Print Head alignment, always load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. z Print Head nozzles are clogged. Press the [OK] to resolve the error. Print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the Print Head. z The Paper Output Slot has been exposed to a strong light source preventing current Print Head alignment. Press the [OK] to resolve the error. Adjust the printer position so the Paper Output Slot will not be exposed directly to a strong light source. After carrying out the above measures, if the problem continues after aligning the Print Head again, press the [OK] to resolve the error, and then perform manual Print Head alignment. For details on manual Print Head alignment, see “Adjusting the Print Head Manually” on page 117 . MessageAction
116Chapter 9Troubleshooting INCOMPATIBLE CAMERA DISCONNECT CAMERA CABLEDisconnect the camera cable, and reconnect it. Depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a print mode compliant with PictBridge before connecting the camera. You may also have to turn on the camera or select Play mode manually after connecting the camera to the machine. Perform necessary operations according to the instruction manual supplied with your camera. If the error is still unresolved, there is a possibility that you are using a digital camera or digital video camcorder that is not supported by this machine. Use a digital camera or digital video camcorder compatible with this machine. INK LOW The ink level becomes low during printing. Press [OK] to continue printing or press [Stop/Reset] to cancel the current print job. INNER COVER IS OPEN If the Inner Cover is open when starting normal printing, close it before pressing [OK] on the machine. LOAD PAPER Reload the paper correctly and press [OK]. NotePressing [Stop/Reset] also enables you to resolve the error, when sending faxes before printing out received data. After you press [Stop/Reset] to resolve the error, ensure to press [FAX] in order to print out data remained in memory. MEMORY IS FULL The machine’s memory is full because you tried to copy too many pages at once or a very detailed document. Divide the document and copy each part separately. The machine’s memory is full because it has received too many documents, or a very long or detailed document. Contact the sender and have him/her divide and resend them. PAPER JAMMED If paper has jammed in the machine, clear the jam, reload the paper in the machine correctly and then press [OK]. PRESS [BLACK] [Color] is pressed. Press [Black]. PRESS [COLOR] [Black] is pressed. Press [Color]. SCANNER ERROR Contact the Canon Customer Care Center. WASTE INK NEAR FULL Ink used for cleaning is absorbed in a waste ink absorber placed in the machine. Press the [OK] to cancel the error so that you can continue printing. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing cannot be done until the waste ink absorber is replaced. Canon recommends to contact a Canon Customer Care Center as soon as possible. You will need to replace a particular part of the machine. MessageAction
Chapter 9 117Troubleshooting Note Adjusting the Print Head Manually If the Automatic Print Head Alignment does not work or if you wish to adjust the print heads manually, follow the procedure below. 1. Press [ON/OFF] to turn on the machine, and then load two sheets of A4/Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette. 2. Ensure that the proper paper source is selected. 3. Press [Menu] repeatedly to display the Maintenance screen. 4. Use [ ] or [ ] to select , then press [OK]. The Print Head alignment pattern is printed. 5. Check the printed patterns and use [ ] or [ ] to input the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks. 6. Press [OK] to move the cursor to column B, and then use [ ] or [ ] to input the number of the pattern that has the least noticeable streaks. 7. Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column P. 8. When you have finished inputti ng all pattern numbers, press [OK]. SETVALUE AW0X
118Chapter 9Troubleshooting „Fax Related Messages MessageAction BUSY/NO SIGNAL The telephone number you dialed is busy. Try dialing again after waiting for a moment. See “Redialing a Busy Number” on page 76 . The fax number dialed was incorrect. Check the fax number and dial again. The recipient’s fax machine is not working. Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine. The recipient is not using a G3 machine. Contact the recipient and ask them to send or receive the document using a G3 machine. The touch tone/rotary pulse setting on your machine is incorrect. Set your machine to the setting that matches your telephone line. See “Setting the Telephone Line Type” on page 62 . The receiving fax machine did not answer within 55 seconds (after all automatic redialing attempts). Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine. For an overseas call, add pauses to the registered number. HANG UP PHONE The handset is not placed in the handset cradle correctly. Replace the handset correctly. NO ANSWER The recipient’s fax machine does not answer. Check the number. Try dialing again after waiting for a moment. NO TONE DETECTED The telephone line cable with a modular plug is not plugged in properly, or is set to . Make sure that the cable is plugged in properly, and resend the fax after a while. If you still cannot send the fax, set to . NO RX PAPER The other party’s fax machine is out of paper or its memory is full. Contact the other party and have them load paper in their fax machine or free up space in their fax machine’s memory. NO TEL NUMBER The coded speed dialing code you entered has not been registered. Register the coded speed dialing code. RECEIVED IN MEMORY The machine was not able to print the received fax either because the paper size setting is incorrect or the ink has run out, and the fax is stored in memory. Correct the paper size setting or replace the ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 98. TRY AGAIN IN B&W The recipient’s fax machine is not color-compatible. Press [Black] to resend the faxes. TX/RX CANCELLED You pressed [Stop/Reset] to cancel the transmission. If required, try sending or receiving again. TX/RX NO.nnnn When the machine sends or receives a fax, it assigns a unique identification number (nnnn). Write the number down if you will need it later.
