MAKING COPIES 10 - 15 Make a double-sided copy from a double-sided original 1Press (Copy) to illuminate it in green. Place the original face up in the ADF. 2Press Duplex/N in 1 and or to select Duplex(1 in 1) . Press Set. 3Press or to select Portrait2 or Landscape1 . Press Set. 4Press or to select Double Sided for the original. Press Set. 5Press Start. 6Make sure that you have put the original in the ADF as shown on the LCD and press Start. 7After all the pages of the original have been scanned on one side, turn the other side of the original face up in the ADF. Place the original face up in the ADF, or face down on the scanner glass. 2Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want (up to 99). 3Press Duplex/N in 1 and or to select Duplex(2 in 1) or Duplex(4 in 1) . Press Set. 4Press or to select Portrait1, Portrait2 , Landscape1 or Landscape2 . Press Set. 5Press Start to scan the original. If you placed the original in the ADF, the MFC starts printing. — OR — If you placed the original on the scanner glass, go to Step 6. 6Place the next original on the scanner glass. Select 1 and press Set or press 1 to copy next page. 7After all the pages of the original have been scanned, select 2 and press Set or press 2.

11 - 1 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 11 Standard telephone and FCC Notices These notices are in effect on models sold and used only in the United States. When programming emergency numbers or making test calls to emergency numbers: ■Remain on the line and briefly explain to the dispatcher the reason for the call before hanging up. ■ Perform these activities in the off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evening. On the backside of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, a product identifier in the format US: AAAEQ##TXXXX. If requested, this number must be provided to the telephone company. You may safely connect this equipment to the telephone line by means of a standard modular jack, USOC RJ11C. A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and telephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68 rules and requirements adopted by the ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to a compatible modular jack that is also compliant. See installation instructions for details. The REN is used to determine the number of devices that may be connected to a telephone line. Excessive RENs on a telephone line may result in the devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most but not all areas, the sum of RENs should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number of devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by the total RENs, contact the local telephone company. For products approved after July 23, 2001, the REN for this product is part of the product identifier that has the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX.The digits represented by ## are the REN without a decimal point (e.g., 06 is a REN of 0.6). IMPORTANT INFORMATION 11 - 2 If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. But if advance notice isn’t practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary. The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens the telephone company will provide advance notice in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain uninterrupted service. If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the telephone line, ensure the installation of this equipment does not disable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about what will disable alarm equipment, call your telephone company or a qualified installer. WARNING For protection against the risk of electrical shock, always disconnect all cables from the wall outlet before servicing, modifying or installing the equipment. This equipment may not be used on coin service lines provided by the telephone company or connected to party lines. Brother cannot accept any financial or other responsibilities that may be the result of your use of this information, including direct, special or consequential damages. 11 - 5 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Since radiation emitted inside the equipment is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the MFC during any phase of user operation. Compliance is mandatory for products marketed in the United States. The following label on the back of the MFC indicates compliance with the FDA regulations and must be attached to laser products marketed in the United States. IMPORTANT INFORMATION 11 - 6 Important safety instructions 1Read all of these instructions. 2Save them for later reference. 3Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. 4Switch off before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. 5Do not use this product near water. 6Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the product. 7Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation; to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heater. This product should never be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventilation is provided. 8This product should be operated from the type of power source indicated on the label. If you are not sure of the type of power available, call your dealer or local power company. Use only the power cord supplied with this MFC. 9This product is equipped with a 3-wire grounded plug, a plug having a third (grounded) pin. This plug will only fit into a grounded power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, call your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the purpose of the grounded plug. 10Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not place this product where people can walk on the cord. 11If an extension cord is used with this product, make sure that the total ampere ratings on the products plugged into the extension cord do not exceed the extension cord ampere rating. 11 - 7 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 13Wait until pages have exited the MFC before picking them up. 14Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots, since they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts resulting in the risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product. Do not attempt to service this product yourself because opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage points and other risks and may void your warranty. Refer all servicing to a Brother Authorized Service Center. For the location of your nearest Brother Authorized Service Center, please call In USA: 1-800-284-4357 or In Canada: 1-877-BROTHER. (See Brother numbers on page i.) 15Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer servicing to Authorized Service Personnel under the following conditions: ■When the power cord is damaged or frayed. ■ If liquid has been spilled into the product. ■ If the product has been exposed to rain or water. ■ If the product does not operate normally when the operating instructions are followed. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions.
