8-7 Maintenance Storing Toner Cartridges Be aware of the following points when storing a new toner cartridge or handling the toner cartr idge that was taken out of the machine for maint enance or reloca ting the machine somewhere. IMPORT\bNT Precautions when storing toner cartridges To use toner cartridges in a safe and trouble-free manner, store them in a place tha\It fulfills the following conditions. • Do not stor e toner cartridges in a location\I exposed to direct sunlight. • Do not stor e toner cartridges in a location\I subject to high temperature or humidity or in a location \Iwith dramatic chan\Iges in temperature or humidity. - Storage temperature range: 32 to 95°F (0 to 35°C) - Storage humidity range: 35 to 85% RH (no conde\Insation) • Do not stor e toner cartridges in a place wh\Iere corrosive gases, such as ammonia, a\Ire generated, or where a considerable amount of salt is c\Iontained in the ai\Ir, or where there is a lot of dust. • Keep toner car tridges out of the r\Ieach of small childr\Ien. • Keep t oner cartridges away from products that may be damaged by magnetism, such as a \Ifloppy disk or disk drive. Store toner cartridges in the sa\fe\R orientation as when they are installed in the\R \fachine. Do not store toner cartridges vertically or upside-down. When re\foving the toner cartridge which is being used fro\f the \fachine Immediately place the removed toner cartridge into the original protective bag or wrap it wi\Ith a thick cloth. \bbout a new toner cartridge Do not take a new toner cartridge out of the pr\Iotective bag until it is ready to be used. NOTE \bbout condensation Even within the storable humidity range, water droplets may develop both inside and\I outside toner cartridges. The formation of water droplets is called con\Idensation. Condensation will ad\Iversely affect the quality of toner cartridges. Using the Toner Saver Mode You can specify whether to conserve the amount of toner used for cop ying and faxing. NOTE To conserve the a\fount of toner used for printing Enable [ Toner Save] on the [Quality] tab of the printer driver. 8-8 Maintenance Before Replacing the Toner Cartridge Before replacing toner cartridges, see “Precautions When Replacing Toner Cartridge” (→P. 8-9) When the toner nearly runs out, follow the steps in the procedur e \felow \fefor e replacing the toner cartr idge. The machine con tinues prin ting until the toner runs out completely . 1 Open the front cover while holding down the open button. 2 Remove the toner c\frtridge. 3 Gently sh\fke the toner c\frtridge five or six times to e venly distribute the toner inside the c\frtridge. 4 Insert the toner c\frtridge. Fit (A) on both sides of\I the toner cartridge into the guides located on both sides of th\Ie machine and slide\I the toner cartridge into the machine until the t\Ioner cartridge comes to rest and is held aga\Iinst the back of the mac\Ihine. (A) (A) 5 Close the front cover. If you cannot close the fr\Ront cover Make sure that the toner cartridge is installed c\Iorrectly. Do not try to forcefully close the toner cover, as this may damage the machine. If there are white lines in the print result or it is blurred or distorted even though the above operations have been performed, replace the toner cartridge with a new one. “Replacing the Toner Cartridge” (→P. 8-8) Replacing the Toner Cartridge Before replacing toner cartridges, see “Precautions When Replacing Toner Cartridge” (→P. 8-9) 1 Open the front cover while holding down the open button.

You can open the pr\Iotective bag with your hands from the notch. * Keep the prot ective bag. You will need them w\Ihen you remove the toner cartridge for printer maintenance or other pu\Irposes. 4 Gently sh\fke the toner c\frtridge five or six times to e venly distribute the toner inside the c\frtridge. 5 Pl\fce the toner c\frtridge on \f fl\ft surf\fce. 6 Fold the t\fb, \fnd the pull out th\Fe se\fling t\fpes (\fppro xim\ftely 20” (50 cm)). IMPORT\bNT Precautions when pullin\Rg out the sealing \Rtape Do not pull the seali\Ing tape at an angle\I or up and down. If the tape breaks, it may not be pulled out \Icompletely. Front View • If the sealing tape \Iis still hanging outside the toner cartridge, pull it out completely . If the tape remains inside the \Itoner cartridge, it may cause poor print quality. If you are using the Fax, please note that you can only print the received data once, because the received data is deleted once it is printed. • Dispose of the sea\Iling tape according to local r egulations. 7 Insert the toner c\frtridge. Fit (A) on both sides of\I the toner cartridge into the guides located on both sides of th\Ie machine and slide\I the toner cartr idge into the machine until the t\Ioner cartridge comes to rest and is held aga\Iinst the back of the mac\Ihine. Precautions When Replacing Toner Cartridge See “Maintenance and Inspections” (→P. xv) in “Important Safety Instructions” as well. W\bRNING Do not dispose of a used toner cartridge in an open fla\fe. This may ignite the toner remaining inside th\Ie cartridge, resulting in burns or fire. C\bUTION Precautions to take when you get toner onto your hands or clothing If toner gets on your hands or clothi\Ing, wash them immediately with cold water. The toner sets onto hands or into clothing if you try to wash it with warm water. \fnce it is set, y\Iou can hardly remove the toner stains. Be careful not to scatter the toner. Do not pull out the \Isealing tape forcefully or stop pulling the tape halfway, as this may cause toner to spill out. If toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash \Ithem immediately with cold water and consult a ph\Iysician.

Model N\fme Supported C\fnon Genuine Toner C\frtridge MF5960dn/ MF5950dwCanon Car tridge 119 Canon Car tridge 119 II Be Careful of Counterfeit Toner Cartridges. Please be aware that there are counterfeit Canon toner cartridges in the marketplace. Use of counterfeit toner cartridges may result in poor print quality or machine performance. Canon is not responsible for any malfunction, accident or \Idamage caused by the use of count\Ierfeit toner cartridges. For more information, see the following Web site. http://www.canon.com/counterfeit Shake the toner cartridge before replace\fent. If the toner is not distributed evenly inside the car\Itridge, this may cause poor print quality. Hold the toner cartridges properly. When handling the t\Ioner cartridge, hold it properly, as shown in the illustration belo\Iw. Do not stand it vertically or hold it u\Ipside down. Do not touch the electrical contacts (\b) or the toner cartridge \fe\fory (B), and do not \Ropen the dru\f protective cover (C). Touching the electrical contacts (A) or the toner cartridge memory (B) may result in damage to the machine. Print quality may deteriorate if you touch or damage the\I photoconductor drum. Never touch it or open th\Ie drum protective cover (C). (A)Bottom View (C) (B) Do not touch the high-voltage contacts (D) or the electrical contacts (E). This may result in damage to the cartridge. (D) (E) Miscellaneous precautions • Do not expose the t\Ioner cartridge to direct sunlight or strong light. • Never disassemble or mo\Idify it. • Condensation may f orm in and on the toner cartridge if it is brought into an environment that expose\Is it to sudden changes in temperature and/or humidity. • If you mo ve the toner cartridge to a location that i\Is warmer or has higher humidit\Iy, leave the cartridge in the new location for 2 hours or longer w\Iithout opening the\I protective bag to allow it to adjust to the new temperature. • Do not leav e the front cover open for a long time with\I the toner cartridges installed. • Keep the toner car tridge away from equipment that \Igenerates magnetic fields, such as LCD displays and computers. • A toner cartridge is a magnetic product. Keep the toner cartridge away from products that may be damaged by magnetism, such as a floppy disk or disk drive. This may lead to damage to data. NOTE \bbout the packing \faterials The packing materials are subject to change in form or placement, or may be added or removed without notice. 8-14 Maintenance Before transporting the machine, see “Precautions When Relocating the Machine” (→P. 8-15) Follow the steps in the procedure \felow to relocate the machine somewhere else for maintenanc e and other purposes. 1 Turn the power OFF, then disconnect the c\fbles \fnd cord from the m\fchine. USB c\fble*(2) Turn the comput er off. (3) Remo ve it from the machine. LAN c\fble*(4) Remove it from the machine. Power cord(5) \bnplug the pow er plug from the AC pow er outlet. (6) Remo ve it from the machine. Telephone c\fbles*(7) Remove it from the machine. * Whether the ca\fle is connec ted or not var ies depending on your envir onment. 2 If you \fre using the multi-pu\Frpose tr\fy, close it. 3 Pull out the p\fper dr\fwer. 4 C\frry the m\fchine to the new inst\fll\ftion site. After making sure that the cover and tray are closed, hold the handle on the front to lift and transport the machine. Check the weight of the machi\Ine so it can be car\Iried safely. When the optional p\Raper feeder is installed\R Remove the paper feeder from the machine, install it in the\I new installation site, then transport the machine. * Do not carr y the machine with\I the paper feeder installed. If you do so, the paper feeder may drop, resulting in persona\Il injury. 5 Put the m\fchine down c\frefully \ft the new inst\fll\ftion sit e. Relocating the Machine When transporting the \fachine lo\Rng distance To prevent damage to the machine during transport, perform the following. • Remove the toner cartr idges * “Storing Toner Cartridges” (→ P. 8-7) • Securely pack the printer in the orig inal \fox with packing mat erials * If the original \fox and packing mat erials are not av aila\fle, find an appropr iate \fox along with packing mat erials and pack the machine and the parts appropr iately.
8-15 Maintenance Precautions When Relocating the Machine IMPORT\bNT Do not carry the \fachine with t\Rhe covers or trays open. Make sure that the scannin\Ig platform and paper drawer are closed before lifting, carrying, and relocating the machi\Ine. C\bUTION Set the \fachine down slowly and carefully. Be careful not to hurt your hands or finge\Irs. W\bRNING When relocating the \fachine Be sure to turn off the power switches of the machin\Ie and your computer, and unplug the po\Iwer plug and interface cables. Failure to do so can damage\I the cables or cords, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
