Engine The engine identification code is a letter located in the eighth digit of the Vehicle Identification Number stamped on a metal tab that is riveted to the instrument panel close to the windshield. Specific engine data is located on a label attached to the timing cover. Transmission The transmission code may be found in two places on the vehicle. One is on the Safety Standard Certification label attached to the left drivers side door lock post. The code appears as a letter in the Trans column of the label. M or D = 5-speed manual transmission T = 4-speed automatic transmission (A4LD/4R44E/4R55E) U = 4-speed automatic transmission (4R70W) D = 5-speed automatic transmission (5R55E) The other location is on the transmission body itself. On manual transmissions, the identification number is located on a plate attached to the main transmission case. On the plate you find Fords assigned part number, the serial number and a bar code used for inventory purposes. On automatic transmissions, the identification number is stamped on plate that hangs from the lower left extension housing bolt. The plate identifies when the transmission was built, its code letter and model number. There were two types of manual transmissions used from 1991-99: the Misubishi 5-speed, and the Mazda M5OD. The Mitsubishi 5-speed was only used on 1991-92 4X4 Rangers with the 2.9L engine. All other applications used the M5OD transmission. Transfer Case All vehicles can be equipped with a mechanical or electronic shift transfer case. The identification number is stamped on a plate on the side of the case. Front Drive Axle The front drive axle on the Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer can be either the Dana 28 series, or the Dana 35 series. However, there are two versions of the Dana 35 and while both are an Independent Front Suspension (IFS) axles, their differences are drastic. The Mountaineer, 1995-99 Explorers and 1998-99 Ranger use a centrally mounted front differential with unequal length upper and lower control arms and front axle half-shafts. All other models use the twin I-beam style front axle assembly. The identification number is stamped on a plate on the differential housing. Rear Axle The rear axle code may be found in two places on the vehicle. One is on the Safety Standard Certification label attached to the left drivers side door lock post. The code appears as a number or letter/number HOW TO USE THIS BOOK 30 Engine
