Position the door on the hinges and install the bolts finger tight. 7. Install all previously removed hardware to the new door before adjustments are made. 8. Install the trim panel and scuff plate if they were removed. 9. Adjust the door and tighten all retaining bolts. 10. Install the hinge access cover plates. 11. ADJUSTMENT Loosen the hinge-to-door bolts for lateral adjustment only. Loosen the hinge-to-body bolts for both lateral and vertical adjustments. Determine which hinge bolts are to be loosened and back them out just enough to allow movement. 1. To move the door safely, use a padded pry bar. When the door is in the proper position, tighten the bolts to specification and check the door operation. There should be no binding or interference when the door is closed and opened. 2. Door closing adjustment can also be affected by the position of the lock striker plate. Loosen the striker plate bolts and move the striker plate just enough to permit proper closing and locking of the door. 3. Before moving the door lock striker, mark its original position for future reference ... ... then loosen the attaching bolts. Hood REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Exploded view of the hood-to-hinge mountingClick to enlarge It is highly recommended that you have at least one assistant helping during this operation. Open the hood. 1. Matchmark the hood-to-hinge position. 2. Disconnect any electrical wire harness plugs. 3. Have youre assistant(s) support the weight of the hood. 4. Remove the hood-to-hinge bolts and lift the hood off of the hinges. 5. Installation is the reverse of the removal. Loosely install the hood and align the matchmarks. Tighten the bolts securely. 6. While an assistant holds the hood, remove the hinge-to-hood attaching bolts ALIGNMENT Open the hood and matchmark the hinge and latch positions. 1. Loosen the hinge-to-hood bolts just enough to allow movement of the hood. 2. Move the hood as required to obtain the proper fit and alignment between the hood and all adjoining body panels. Tighten the bolts securely when satisfactorily aligned. 3. Loosen the 2 latch attaching bolts. 4. Move the latch from side-to-side to align the latch with the striker. Torque the latch bolts. 5. Make sure the window is closed before opening the liftgate. Open the liftgate door. 1. Support the door in the open position and disconnect the liftgate gas cylinder assist rod assemblies by carefully prying the locking spring out of the ball socket. 2. Carefully move the headliner out of position and remove the hinge-to-header panel attaching nuts. 3. Remove the hinge-to-liftgate attaching bolts and remove the complete assembly. 4. ... then pull the gas cylinders end from the ball socket To install: Install the hinge to liftgate door and tighten the attaching bolts. 1. Install the hinge to roof header panel and tighten the nut. 2. Adjust the liftgate hinge as necessary. 3. Securely tighten the retaining bolts. Reposition and trim panels. 4. ALIGNMENT On Explorer, the liftgate glass should not be open while the liftgate is open. Make sure the window is closed before opening the liftgate. The liftgate can be adjusted slightly in or out and side to side by loosening the hinge-to-header nut or bolt. Some up and down adjustment can be accomplished by loosening the hinge bolts on the liftgate and moving the gate up or down. The liftgate should be adjusted for even and parallel fit with adjoining panels. The door latch strikers can also be adjusted. Loosen the striker center bolt and move the assembly to a new position.
