    General
    Problem
    I cannot make and receive 
    calls.
    I cannot make calls.
    The unit does not work.
    The unit does not ring.
    The unit displays the following
    though the paper is inserted.
    The other party complains 
    they only hear a fax tone and
    cannot talk.
    The button
    does not function properly.
    The receive mode does not
    function properly.
    During programming, I cannot
    enter the code, ID number or
    password.
    The ink film runs out quickly.
    The unit beeps.
    REDIAL/PAUSE
    CHECK PAPER
    lThe power cord or telephone line cord is not connected.
    Check the connections (p. 16).
    lIf you used a splitter to connect the unit, remove the
    splitter and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the
    unit operates properly, check the splitter.
    lThe dialing mode setting is wrong. Change the setting of
    feature #13 (p. 81).
    lDisconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect
    the line to a known working telephone. If the working
    telephone operates properly, contact our service personnel
    to have the unit repaired. If the working telephone does
    not operate properly, contact your telephone company.
    lThe ringer volume is set to off. Adjust it (p. 23, 24).
    lThe ring setting of feature #06 is set to “RINGER OFF”.
    Change to another ring setting (p. 80).
    lThe paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (p. 15)
    and press to clear the message.
    lFAX ONLYmode is set. Tell the other party the number is
    only used for faxes.
    lChange to TAD/FAX mode (p. 62), TELmode (p. 52) or
    TEL/FAX mode (p. 54).
    l If you use a distinctive ring service, turn AUTO ANSWER
    off so that the fax machine is in TELmode.
    l If you use a distinctive ring service, make sure you have
    set the same ring pattern assigned by the telephone
    company (p. 58).
    lIf this button is pressed during dialing, a pause will be
    inserted. If pressed immediately after a dial tone is
    obtained, the last number dialed will be redialed.
    lADistinctive Ring pattern of feature #31 is set (p. 58).
    lTEL/FAX mode is set (p. 54, 55).
    lAll or part of the numbers are the same. Change the
    number: feature #11 (p. 81), #41 (p. 84), #51 and #52 
    (p. 85).
    lThe HELPprinting function, copy function, and reports
    also use ink film.
    lRecording paper or ink film has run out. Press to
    stop the beeps and install paper/ink film.STOP

    Whenever I try to retrieve my
    voice mail messages, the
    retrieval is interrupted by the
    fax tone.
    The speakerphone is not

    l You are probably entering 98 or 99 to retrieve your
    messages. 9 is the default setting for the fax activation
    code. If you use a voice mail service, set the fax activation
    feature to off or reprogram the activation code (feature #41
    on page 84).
    l Use the speakerphone in a quiet room.
    l If you have difficulty hearing the other party, adjust the
    volume using or .
    l The handset is too far from the base unit.
    l The handset is engaged in an outside call.
    l Someone is calling you from outside. Press             or
    to answer the outside call. The
    intercom call will be terminated.

    lMake sure that the battery is installed correctly (p. 101).
    lCharge the battery fully (p. 22).
    lClean the charge contacts and charge again (p. 22).
    lThe ringer volume is set to off. Press 
    (p. 23).
    lThe handset is too far from the base unit. Move closer and
    try again.
    lPlace the handset on the base unit and try again.
    lThe power cord is disconnected. Plug in the power cord.
    lLocate the handset and the base unit away from electrical
    appliances.
    lMove closer to the base unit.
    lPress to select a clear channel.
    lRaise the base unit antenna.
    lPlace the handset on the base unit, and disconnect the
    power cord to reset the unit. Connect the power cord, and
    try again.
    CH
    LOUD/RINGER
    The handset does not work.

    Fax – sending
    Problem
    lThe other party’s fax machine is busy or has run out of
    recording paper. Try again.
    lThe other party’s machine is not a facsimile. Check with
    the other party.
    lThe other party’s fax machine rings too many times. Send
    a fax manually – dial the number, confirm the fax tone,
    then press .
    lIf your line has special telephone services such as call
    waiting, the service may have been activated during fax
    transmission. Connect the unit to a line that does not have
    these services.
    lThe extension telephone on the same line is off the hook.
    Hang up the extension telephone and try again.
    lTry copying the document. If the copied image is clear, there
    may be something wrong with the other party’s machine.
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 102).
    lUse the overseas transmission mode of feature #23 (p. 82).
    lAdd two pauses at the end of the telephone number or
    dial manually.
    FAX/START
    Cause & solution
    I cannot receive documents
    automatically.
    The display shows the

    received.

    Fax – receiving
    Problem
    lThe receive mode is set to TELmode. Set to TAD/FAX
    mode (p. 62), FAX ONLYmode (p. 53) or TEL/FAX mode
    (p. 54).
    lThe time taken to answer the call is too long. Decrease
    the number of rings: feature #06 (p. 80), #30 (p. 83) and
    #78 (p. 87).
    lThe greeting message is too long. Shorten the message 
    (p. 63).
    lThe incoming call is not a fax. Change the receive mode
    to TELmode (p. 52) or TAD/FAX mode (p. 62).
    lIf a blank sheet is ejected after the received document is
    printed out, the receiving reduction rate is not
    programmed correctly. Program the proper rate in feature
    #36 (p. 83).
    lThe other party placed the document in their fax machine
    the wrong way. Check with the other party.

    Awhite line or a dirty pattern
    appears on your recording

    The printing quality is poor.

    Problem
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 102).
    lThe other party sent a faint document. Ask them to send a
    clearer copy of the document.
    lThe thermal head is dirty. Clean it (p. 103).
    lSome paper has instructions recommending which side to
    print on. Try turning the paper over.
    lYou may have used paper with a cotton and/or fiber
    content that is over 20%, such as letterhead or resume
    paper. We recommend smooth paper such as Hammermill
    Jet Print for clearer printing.
    lPress until a single beep is heard.
    lThe memory is full of received documents due to a lack of
    recording paper or a recording paper jam. Install paper 
    (p. 15) or clear the jammed paper (p. 98).
    FAX

    I cannot select the desired 
    receive mode.

    Problem
    lYou cannot make a copy during programming. Make the
    copy after programming or stop programming.
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 102).
    lThe thermal head is dirty. Clean it (p. 103).
    lSome paper has instructions recommending which side to
    print on. Try turning the paper over.
    lYou may have used paper with a cotton and/or fiber
    content that is over 20%, such as letterhead or resume
    paper. We recommend smooth paper such as Hammermill
    Jet Print for clearer printing.
    Cause & solution
    The unit does not make a copy.
    Ablack line, a white line or a
    dirty pattern appears on the
    copied document.
    The copied image is distorted.
    The printing quality is poor.

    lPress the remote operation ID correctly and firmly (p. 70).
    lThe mailbox password is wrong. Enter the correct

    lThe memory is full. Erase unnecessary messages 
    (p. 66, 67, 74).
    lSomeone is calling you from outside. Press to
    answer the outside call. The remote operation will be
    terminated.
    lSomeone is operating the answering device.
    lYou are too far from the base unit. Move closer.
    TALK
    Cause & solution
    I cannot retrieve recorded
    messages from a remote
    location.
    Messages in the mailbox do not
    play back.
    The other party complains that
    they cannot leave a voice
    message.
    While operating the answering
    device from the handset, a
    series of tones is heard.
    I cannot operate the answering

    If a power failure occurs!
    lThe unit will not function.
    lThe unit is not designed for making emergency telephone calls when the power fails.
    Alternative arrangements should be made for access to emergency services.
    lFax transmission and reception will be interrupted.
    lIf delayed transmission of feature #25 (p. 82) is programmed and the start time has passed
    during a power failure, transmission will be attempted soon after power is restored.
    lIf fax documents are stored in memory, they will be lost. When power is restored, a power
    down report will be printed out stating which contents in memory have been erased.

    If the unit does not eject any recording paper during fax reception or copying, the recording
