Locate the error code in the table and follow the recommended actions to resolve the problem. Remove the jammed document. #003 Transmission failed due to the high volum e of data. When sending a fax: • Reduce the scanning resolution, and try to send the document again. When receiving a fax: • Reduce the scanning resolution or ask the sender to divide the document before sending it again. #005 A fax recipient did not respond with i n 35 seconds. Repeat the sending procedure from the beginning. Additionally, ask the recipient to check the fax machine. When making an overseas call, add a pause to the fax number. The recipient may not be a Super G3 * fax machine. * G3 is one of international standards for fax that standardized by ITU-T (ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector), and is for an analog telephone line. Ask the recipient what type of fax machine is being used, and then send the document to a Super G3 fax machine. If the recipient does not have a Super G3 fax machine, send the document again using a communication mode that is compatible with the recipient’s fax machine. #012 The recipient’s machine has run out of pa p er. Ask the recipient to ensure that paper is loaded in the machine. #018 You cannot send a fax because the l i ne is busy or disconnected. Wait a moment, and then try again. If you are still unable to send the document, ask the recipient to verify that the fax machine is ready to receive a fax. The settings confi gured on the recipient’s machine may not incompatible with yours. Verify that the recipient’s machine is ready to receive a fax, and then try again. No pause was added to the fax number when attempting an international fax transmission. Add a pause after the country code or in front of the fax number, and then redial the number. If you want to send the document to a recipient that is registered under a one-touch key, change the settings for international sending in the detailed setting screen. #022 Sending faxes from a computer is re s tricted. 104 If you cannot solve the problem Resolve a Problem Follow the procedures below to resolve your problem. See [Troubleshooting] in the e-Manual or the Q&A from the support page of the offi cial Canon Web site. WARNING If the machine makes strange noises or emits smoke or odors: Turn OFF the power immediately, disconnect the po wer cord, and contact the Canon Customer Care Center. Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the machine yourself. IMPORTANTIMPORTANTIf you attempt to repair the machine by yourself, it may void the limited warranty. Contact your local authorized Canon dealer or the Canon help line for assistance. 105 Tr o u b l e s h o o t i n g FAQ Fax QCan I turn off the incoming ring when receiving a fax? └ AYes, but you can turn off the incoming ring for faxes only when you are using mode. To t u r n o ff the incoming ring for faxes, press [ ] (Menu) < RX Function Settings > . Fax Q When using mode, I often miss voice calls because the incoming ring rings only for a short period of time. How do I increase the time of rings when receiving a voice call? └ ASelect < RX Mode > in the fax mode , and then specify the desired ring time (sec.). Fax QWhen an answering machine is connecte d to the machine, how do I make the answering machine to activate only when receiving a voice call? └ ASet the fax receive mode to , and then set the answering machine to activate after a few rings. The machine will detect a fax signal before the answering machine activates, if the answering m a chine is set to activate after at least two rings. For details about how to change the number of rings, see the answering machine’s manual. Fax QThe connected external telephone has fax fu nctions, but I want to receive a fax not with the external telephone but this machine. └ ASet the fax receive mode to , and then disable the external telephone’s fax functions. When both the machine and the external telephone are set to use the fax function, the machine or devic e th at fi rst detects the fax signal will receive the fax. To always receive fax with the machine, you should disable the external telephone’s fax functions. For details, see the external telephone’s manual.
106 QHow do I use the Scan function when the machine is connected to a computer via a network? └ AYou must register the machine to the MF Network Scan Utility fi rst. To re g is te r, 1 . F rom the task tray on your desktop, click [ ]. 2. Place a check next to the machine, and then click [ OK]. QCan I use the scan function when using a machine and drivers that are shared by another person? └ ANo, you may not use the scan function when sharing drivers that are installed to another computer. To use the scan function, install the MF Drivers on your computer. You can use the supplied user software CD-ROM or download the drivers from the offi ci al Canon Website site (http://www.usa.canon.com). For details about installing drivers, see the Starter Guide. QTo which fi le formats can I save the scanned images? └ AYou may save scanned fi les to the following formats: • BMP• JPEG/Exif • TIFF• PDF When saving as a PDF fi le, you can create a PDF fi le of a single or multiple page document, or add a page to an existing PDF fi le.

QCan I scan multiple images and save as a single PDF fi le? └ AYes, you can save multiple images as a single PDF fi le when scanning with the MF To o l b o x . 108 If a Power Failure Occurs The machine cannot be used while the power supply is cut OFF. The fax function during a power failure : • Faxes cannot be sent or received. • You may not be able to make a call with the external telephone depending on your telephone. • You may be able to receive a call with the external telephone depending on your telephone.Data storage for when the power supply is cut OFF Even if power is lost due to a power failure or acci dental unplugging, any sent or received documents stored in the memory are backed up. Maintenance and Inspections WARNING • Tu r n o ff the machine and unplug the power cord from the outlet before cleaning. Failure to do so may result in a fi re or an electric shock • Unplug the power plug from the power outlet periodically and clean the area around the base of the power plug’s metal pins and the power outlet with a dry cloth to remove dust and grime. When damp, accumulated dust may cause short circuiting or fi res. • Use a damp, well wrung-out cloth to clean the machine. Dampen cleaning cloths with water only. Do not use alcohol, benzenes, paint thinners, or other fl ammable substances. If these substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, this may result in a fi re or electric shock. • Check the power cord and plug regularly for damage. Check the machine for rust, dents, scratches, cracks, or excessive heat generation. Use of poorly-maintained equipment may result in a fi re or electric shock. Consumables WARNING • Do not dispose of used toner cartridges in open fl ames. This may cause an ignition, and result in burns or fi re. • If you accidentally spill or scatter toner, carefully wipe up the loose toner with a damp, soft cloth and avoid inhaling any toner dust. Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up loose toner. Doing so may cause a malfunction in the vacuum cleaner or result in a dust explosion due to static discharge. CAUTION • Keep the toner cartridges and other consumables out of the reach of small children. If toner is ingested, consult a physician or poison control center immediately. • Do not attempt to disassemble the toner cartridge. The toner may scatter and get into your eyes or mouth. If toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and consult a physician.
