General Information7 1 3 Fax and telephone keys:„Speaker Phone Turns the speaker phone on or off. „ Hold (MFC-790CW) Lets you place telephone calls on hold. „ Hold/Intercom (MFC-990CW) Lets you place telephone calls on hold. Also, press this key to speak on the intercom or to transfer an incoming call to the cordless handset. „ Redial Redials the last 30 numbers called. „ Pause Inserts a pause when dialing numbers. 4 Dial Pad Use these keys to dial telephone and fax numbers and as a keyboard for entering information into the machine. (Canada only) The # key lets you temporarily switch the dialing mode during a telephone call from Pulse to Tone. 5 LCD (liquid crystal display) This is a Touchscreen LCD. You can access the menus and options by pressing buttons displayed on the screen. Also lets you start a scanning operation (in color or black & white, depending on the scanning setting in the ControlCenter software). „ Black Start Lets you start sending faxes or making copies in black & white. General Information9 1 9 New Fax(es)When Fax Preview is set to On, you can see how many new faxes you have received. 10 Voice messages in the machine’s memory Shows how many received voice messages are in the memory. 11 History Lets you view a list of outgoing calls and the caller ID history. Also, lets you fax or call the number you have chosen from the lists. 12 Warning icon Appears when there is an error or maintenance message; press the Warning icon to view it, and then press to return to the Ready screen.Basic Operations1 To use the Touchscreen press the MENU or option button you want to operate directly on the LCD screen. To access more menus or options, press ab or dc to scroll the screen. Press to return to the previous menu. The following steps show how to change a setting in the machine. 10 2 Loading paper and other print media 2 Note To print on Photo (4×6) or Photo-L (3.5 ×5) paper, you must use the photo bypass tray. (See Loading photo paper on page 14.) aIf the paper support flap is open, close it, and then pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bLift the paper tray cover (1). cWith both hands, gently press and slide the paper side guides (1) and paper length guide (2) to fit the paper size. Make sure that the triangular marks (3) on the paper side guides (1) and paper length guide (2) line up with the mark for the paper size you are using. Note When you are using Legal size paper, press and hold the universal guide release button (1) as you slide out the front of the paper tray. Loading paper and documents2 1 2 3 3 1 1

Note Always make sure that the paper is not curled. eGently put the paper into the paper tray print side down and top edge in first. Check that the paper is flat in the tray. Note Be careful that you do not push the paper in too far; it may lift at the back of the tray and cause feed problems. fGently adjust the paper side guides (1) to the paper with both hands. Make sure the paper side guides touch the sides of the paper. gClose the output paper tray cover. hSlowly push the paper tray completely into the machine. 1
Chapter 2 12 iWhile holding the paper tray in place, pull out the paper support (1) until it clicks, and then unfold the paper support flap (2). Note Do not use the paper support flap for Legal paper. Loading envelopes and post cards2 About envelopes2 „ Use envelopes that weigh from 20 to 25 lb (80 to 95 g/m 2). „ Some envelopes need margin settings to be set in the application. Make sure you do a test print first before printing many envelops. CAUTION DO NOT use any of the following types of envelopes, as they will cause paper feed problems: • That are of a baggy construction. • That are embossed (have raised writing on them). • That have clasps or staples. • That are pre-printed on the inside. Occasionally you may experience paper feed problems caused by the thickness, size and flap shape of the envelopes you are using. 1 2 Glue Double flap
Loading paper and documents13 2 How to load envelopes and post cards2 aBefore loading, press the corners and sides of envelopes or post cards to make them as flat as possible. Note If envelopes or post cards are ‘double- feeding’, put one envelope or post card in the paper tray at a time. bPut envelopes or post cards in the paper tray with the address side down and the leading edge in first as shown in the illustration. With both hands, gently press and slide the paper side guides (1) and paper length guide (2) to fit the size of the envelopes or post cards. If you have problems when printing on envelopes, try the following suggestions: 2 aOpen the envelope flap. bMake sure the open flap is either to the side of the envelope or to the back edge of the envelope when printing. cAdjust the size and margin in your application. 2 1
Chapter 2 14 Loading photo paper2 Note In Canada, the photo bypass tray is called the photo paper tray . Use the photo bypass tray, is located on the top of the output paper tray cover, to print on Photo 4×6 and Photo L 3.5 ×5 size paper. When you use the photo bypass tray, you do not have to take out the paper that is in the tray beneath it. aSqueeze the blue photo bypass tray release button (1) using your right index finger and thumb and pull the photo bypass tray back until it clicks (2). bPress and slide the paper side guides (1) and paper length guide (2) to fit the paper size. cPut the photo paper into the photo bypass tray and gently adjust the paper side guides to the paper. Make sure the paper side guides touch the sides of the paper. Note • Be careful that you do not push the paper in too far; it may lift at the back of the tray and cause feed problems. • Always make sure that the paper is not curled or wrinkled.
