    Polled transmit lets you set up your machine 
    to wait with a document so another fax 
    machine can call and retrieve it.
    The document will be stored and can be 
    retrieved by any other fax machine until you 
    delete it from the memory. (See  Checking 
    and cancelling waiting jobs  on page 47.)
    Setup for polled transmit10
    aPress (Fax). 
    bLoad your document.
    cPress  aor b to choose  Polled TX .
    dPress dor c to choose  Standard.
    Press  OK.
    ePress  aor b to choose any settings you 
    want to change.
    Press  dor c to choose the settings.
    After each setting is accepted, you can 
    continue to change more settings.
    fPress  Mono Start .
    gIf you are using the scanner glass, the 
    LCD will prompt you to choose one of 
    the options.
    „ Press  1 to send another page. 
    Go to  h.
    „ Press  2 or  Mono Start  to send the 
    document.
    hPlace the next page on the scanner 
    glass, press  OK. Repeat  g and  h for 
    each additional page.
    Your machine will automatically send 
    the fax.
    Setup for polled transmit with 
    secure code10
    Secure Polling lets you restrict who can get 
    the documents you set up to be polled.
    Secure Polling only works with Brother fax 
    machines. If another person wants to retrieve 
    a fax from your machine, they will have to 
    enter the secure code.
    aPress ( Fax). 
    bLoad your document.
    cPress  aor b to choose  Polled TX .
    dPress dor c to choose  Secure.
    Press  OK.
    eEnter a four-digit number.
    Press  OK.
    fPress  aor b to choose any settings you 
    want to change.
    Press  dor c to choose the settings.
    After each setting is accepted, you can 
    continue to change more settings.

    Entering Copy mode11
    When you want to make a copy, press (Copy ) to illuminate it in blue.
     
    The LCD shows: 
    1 No. of Copies
    You can enter the number of copies you want 
    by using the dial pad.
    Press  aor b to scroll through the  Copy key 
    options.

    change the amount of time that the machine

    Making a single copy11
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.

    cPress Mono Start  for B&W copy or

    Making multiple copies11
    You can make up to 99 copies in one print 
    run.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.

    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress Mono Start  for B&W copy or 
    Colour Start  for colour copy.
    Note
    To sort the copies, press  aor b to choose 
    Stack/Sort . (See Sorting copies using 
    the ADF  on page 96.)

    Copy settings11
    You can change the copy settings temporarily 
    for the next multiple copies. 
    The machine returns to its default settings 
    after 1 minute, or if the Mode Timer returns 
    the machine to Fax mode. (See  Mode Timer 
    on page 26.)
    If you have finished choosing settings, press 
    Mono Start  or Colour Start .
    If you want to choose more settings, press 
    a or b.
    Note
    You can save some of the settings that 
    you use most often by setting them as 
    default. These settings will stay until you 
    change them again. (See  Setting your 
    changes as a new default  on page 100.)
     
    Changing copy speed and 
    quality11
    You can choose from a range of quality. The 
    factory setting is Normal.
    „ Fast
    Fast copy speed and lowest amount of ink 
    used. Use to save time printing 
    documents to be proof-read, large 
    documents or many copies.
    „ Normal
    Normal is the recommended mode for 
    ordinary print outs. This produces good 
    copy quality with good copy speed.
    „ Best
    Use best mode to copy precise images 
    such as photographs. This provides the 
    highest resolution and slowest speed.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Quality.
    ePress dor c to choose  Fast, Normal  or 
    Best .
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Enlarging or reducing the 
    image copied11
    You can choose an enlargement or reduction 
    ratio. If you choose  Fit to Page, your 
    machine will adjust the size automatically to 
    the paper size you set.
    (MFC-5890CN only) 
    If you use this setting, use the scanner glass.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose 
    Enlarge/Reduce .
    ePress dor c to choose  100%, Enlarge , 
    Reduce , Fit to Page  or 
    Custom(25-400%) .
    fDo one of the following:
    „
    If you chose Enlarge or Reduce, 
    press  OK and press dorc to choose 
    the enlargement or reduction ratio you 
    want. Press 
    OK.
    „ If you chose  Custom(25-400%) , 
    press  OK and then enter an 
    enlargement or reduction ratio from 
    25%  to 400% . 
    Press OK.
    „If you chose  100% or Fit to Page ,

    Note
    • Page Layout and  Skew Adjustment  are 
    not available with  Enlarge/Reduce .
    • Book Copy , Sort  and 
    Watermark Copy  are not available with 
    Fit to Page .
    • Fit to Page  does not work properly if 
    the document on the scanner glass is 
    skewed by more than 3 degrees. Using 
    the document guidelines on the left and 
    top, place your document in the upper left 
    hand corner, with the document face down 
    on the scanner glass.
    • Fit to Page  is not available for a Legal 
    size document.
     
    Making N in 1 copies or a 
    poster (Page Layout) 11
    The N in 1 copy feature can help you save 
    paper by letting you copy two or four pages 
    onto one printed page.
    (MFC-6490CW) The 1 to 2 feature copies 
    one A3 or Ledger size page onto two A4 or 
    Letter size pages. If you use this setting, use 
    the scanner glass.
    You can also produce a poster. When you 
    use the poster feature your machine divides 
    your document into sections, then enlarges 
    the sections so you can assemble them into a 
    poster. If you want to print a poster, use the 
    scanner glass.
    Important
    „ Make sure paper size is set to Letter, 
    Ledger, A4 or A3.
    „ You cannot use the Enlarge/Reduce 
    setting with the N in 1 and Poster features.
    „ If you are producing multiple colour 
    copies, N in 1 copy is not available.
    „ (P)  means Portrait and  (L) means 
    Landscape.
    „ You can only make one poster copy and 
    1 to 2 copy at a time.
    Note
    •Watermark Copy , Book Copy , Sort , 
    Enlarge/Reduce  and 
    Skew Adjustment  are not available with 
    Page Layout .
    • (MFC-5890CN)  4 in 1 and Poster (3 ×3) are not available 
    if you are using A3 or Ledger size paper.

    If you choose another setting, go to

    Do one of the following:
    „ If you chose  2in1(P)  or 
    2 in 1 (L) , press aor b to choose 
    Layout Format . Press dor c to 
    choose  LGRx2 iLGRx1 , 
    LTRx2 iLGRx1 , A3x2 iA3x1  or 
    A4x2 iA3x1 . 
    „ If you chose  Poster(2 x 2) , 
    press  aor b to choose 
    Layout Format . Press dor c to 
    choose  LGRx1 iLGRx4 , 
    LTRx1 iLGRx4 , A3x1 iA3x4  or 
    A4x1 iA3x4 .
    gIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start  to scan the page.
    If you placed the document in the ADF 
    or are making a poster, the machine 
    scans the pages and starts printing.
    If you are using the scanner glass, go 
    to step h.
    hAfter the machine scans the page, 
    press 1 to scan the next page.
    iPlace the next page on the scanner 
    glass.
    Press  OK.
    Repeat steps h and  i for each page of 
    the layout.
    jAfter all the pages have been scanned, 
    press  2 to finish.
    If you are copying from the ADF, insert the 
    document face up in the direction shown

    You can sort multiple copies. Pages will be 
    sorted in the order 321, 321, 321, and so on.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Stack/Sort .
    ePress dor c to choose  Sort.
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Note
    Fit to Page , Page Layout  and 
    Book Copy  are not available with  Sort.
     
    Adjusting Brightness and 
    Contrast11

    You can adjust the copy brightness to make 
    copies darker or lighter.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Brightness .
    ePress dor c to make a darker or lighter 
    copy.
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or

    You can adjust the copy contrast to help an 
    image look sharper and more vivid.
    aPress (Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Contrast.
    ePress dor c to change the contrast.
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Paper Options11
    Paper Type11
    If you are copying on special paper, set the 
    machine for the type of paper you are using to 
    get the best print quality.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Paper Type .
    ePress dor c to choose  Plain Paper , 
    Inkjet Paper , Brother BP71 , 
    Other Glossy  or Transparency .
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Paper Size11
    If copying on paper other than A4 size, you 
    will need to change the paper size setting. 
    You can copy only on Ledger, A3, Letter, 
    Legal, A4, A5 or Photo 10 cm ×15 cm paper.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document. 
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Paper Size .
    ePress dor c to choose  A4, A5 , A3 , 
    10x15cm , Letter , Legal  or Ledger .
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Tray Select (MFC-6490CW only)11
    You can change the tray that will be used for 
    the next copy. To change the default tray see 
    Tray use in Copy mode (MFC-6490CW only)  
    on page 28.
    aMake sure you are in Copy mode.
    bLoad your document.
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Tray Select .
    ePress dor c to choose  Tray#1 or 
    Tray#2 .
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or

    Skew Adjustment 
    (MFC-6490CW only)11
    If your copy is scanned skewed, your 
    machine can correct the data automatically. 
    This setting is only available when using the 
    scanner glass and 100% copy.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document. 
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose 
    Skew Adjustment .
    ePress dor c to choose  Auto (or Off ).
    Press  OK.
    fIf you do not want to change additional 
    settings, press  Mono Start or 
    Colour Start .
    Note
    •Page Layout , Enlarge/Reduce , 
    Book Copy  and Watermark Copy  are 
    not available with  Skew Adjustment .
    • You cannot use this setting with Ledger,  A3 or paper smaller than 64 mm ×91 mm.
    • This setting is only available for paper that  is rectangular or square.
    • Skew Adjustment
     is only available if the 
    document is skewed by less than 3 degrees.
    • Skew Adjustment  may not work 
    correctly if your document is too thick.
     
    Book Copy11
    Book copy corrects dark borders and skew. 
    Your machine can correct the data 
    automatically or you can make specific 
    corrections.
    If you use this setting, use the scanner glass.
    aPress ( Copy).
    bLoad your document. 
    cEnter the number of copies you want.
    dPress  aor b to choose  Book Copy .
    eDo one of the following:
    „ If you want to correct the data 
    yourself, press  dor c to choose 
    On(Preview) . 
    Press  Mono Start  or Colour Start  
    and go to step f.
    „ If you want the machine to correct 
    the data automatically, press  dor c 
    to choose  On and go to step g.
    fAdjust the skewed data by using  #or l.
    Remove the shadows by using  aor b.
    gIf you have finished making corrections, 
    press  Mono Start  or Colour Start .
    Note
    Book Copy is not available with 
    Page Layout , Sort , Fit to Page , 
    Skew Adjustment  or
