Connec tions have b een re-estab lished b etween the EI in the SREPN and its EI/SNI c ounterp art in the Release 7r. Fault isolation procedures Use the following p roc ed ure to isolate faults on a fib er link. This sec tion c ontains information on: n‘‘Fib er fault isolation’’ n‘‘Loopback tests’’ Fiber fault isolation !CAUTION: On systems with d up lic ated Port Network Connec tivity (PNC), first b usyout the standby PNC (busyout pnc-standby ) b efore b usying out any of the following standby components: nFiber-Link (FIBER-LK) nSt a n d b y Ex p a n s io n I n t e r f a c e ( EXP- I N TF) nSwitc h Nod e Interfac e (SNI) nDS1 Converter (DS1-CONV) !WARNING: Calls are d rop p ed when b usying out of any of these c omp onents on a simp lex PNC. !CAUTION: Be sure to release all b usied out c omp onents after c omp leting the tests. To isolate fib er link faults use two p roc ed ures: n‘‘Gather information’’ n‘‘Test the fib er link hard ware’’ Gather information 1. Know whic h fiber sp an to isolate b y using the link information (status health ) reports from b oth the Release 7r and the SREPN and the information in Tab le 2-7 . 2. Enter display alarms and press En t e r.

Therefore, alarms may b e p resent, even thoug h the p rob lem has been diag nosed and fixed . 4. Look for any on-b oard alarms other than the EI c irc uit p ac k. If there are any, rep lac e the c irc uit p ac k. Do not rep lac e the EI c irc uit p ac k unless there are on-board alarms. If No, 5. Enter display errors and press En te r. 6. Wait 5 minutes for any SNI-BD or SNI-PEER alarms to c lear. NOTE: You c an sp eed this p roc ess with clear firmware counters [a-pnc |b-pnc ] for the repaired PNC. 10. Enter list fiber-link to g et the p hysic al loc ation of the fib er-link end p oints. 11. If a DS1 CONV is ad ministered to the fiber-link (DS1 CONV is y ), enter display fiber-link to d etermine the p hysic al loc ation of the DS1 CONV c irc uit p ac ks on the fiber-link. 12. Busyout the fiber link (busyout fiber-link number). 13. Test the fib er link (test fiber-link number long ). 14. When looking at test results, c onsult the exp lanations for Fig ure 2-17 and Fi g u re 2 - 1 8 later in this c hap ter. 3. If Ye s, use the test maintenance long c ommand to release an Exp ansion Interfac e that may b e held reset b y an EPN Maintenanc e circuit pack. NOTE: Tests attemp ted on the EI c irc uit p ac k in the SREPN d o not run. 4. If No, Did EXP-INTF Test #242 fail? a. If Yes, rep lac e the EI c irc uit p ac k and the lig htwave transc eiver (if p resent) and g o bac k to Step 12 in the ‘‘ Gather information’’ p roc ed ure ab ove. If Ye s, is there an SNI-BD 513 alarmed error (display errors for category pnc )? If yes, replace cabling between the SNI circuit pack and the DS1C c irc uit p ac k. c . If the alarm p ersists, first attempt the manual loop b ac k p roc ed ure b elow, then rep lac e the DS1C and the SNI c irc uit p ac ks and g o b ac k to Step 12 in the ‘‘ Gather information’’ p roc ed ure ab ove. 10. If No, if t h e c o n n e c t e d c i rc u it p a c k is a n EXP-I N TF, d i d Te s t # 2 3 8 f a i l? a. NOTE: Test #790 fails with Error Cod e 1 when in Survive mod e.

If the b oard is still not inserted , rep lac e the DS1C c irc uit p ac k and the EI or SNI c onnec ted to it and Go b ac k to Step 12 in the ‘‘ Gather information’’ p roc ed ure ab ove. 14. If No, visually c hec k to see if any CSU d evic es are loop ed b ac k. a. Busyout the c irc uit p ac k (busyout board UUCSS ). b. Test for external loopback (test ds1-facility UUCSS external-loop ) for eac h DS1 fac ility. NOTE: Many tests p ass if the system is in Survive mod e. 15. Did Test #788 p ass and Test #789 fail? a. If yes, rep lac e the DS1C and lig htwave transc eiver (if p resent) at the other end of the DS1C c omplex. (See Figure 2-18 ) b . Go b ac k to Step 12 in the ‘‘ Gather information’’ p roc ed ure ab ove. 16. If No, d id Test #788 fail or ab ort and Test #789 fail or abort? a. If Ye s, enter test ds1-facility UUCSS long for eac h ad ministered and eq uip p ed DS1 fac ility. NOTE: If the Switc h Nod e Interfac e (SNI) b oard ’s yellow LED is fast flashing (0.1 sec on/0.1 sec off), it c an ind ic ate a p rob lem with the fib er from the SNI b oard to the SREPN. If this test p asses from b oth sid es, b ut other tests fail, suc h as Test #241, this c ond ition ind ic ates either a faulty lig htwave transc eiver or a faulty fib er c ab le. To d etermine if either a lig htwave transc eiver or the fib er itself has failed, exec ute the Exp ansion Interfac e ‘‘ Manual loop b ac k proc ed ure’’ described below. NOTE: This test c an only b e run from b oth Exp ansion Interfac e c irc uit p ac ks if they are the Stand by pair, and if the Ac tive p air is working p rop erly. Use this p roc ed ure when nUsing DS1 CONV fac ilities and a 9823A lig htwave transc eiver. nAn EI/SNI c irc uit p ac k c annot b e tested b y software. For examp le, an EI c irc uit p ac k loc ated in an EPN that is d own c annot b e tested . If the ac tive SNC is not inserted , Test #760 c an b e run with test hardware-group pnc a-pnc or b-pnc . 3. Determine whether more than one SNI is unab le to c ommunic ate with software. Verify SNI and SNC c irc uit p ac k insertion with the list configuration carrier UUC c ommand and c hec k for SNI and SNC insertion for every ad ministered switc h nod e c arrier. 4. If all of the SNIs and SNCs are not inserted (No Board d isp lays for eac h b oard) in the entire PNC (either the a-p nc or the b -p nc ), then the link b etween the PPN EI (on the PNC where SNI and SNC c irc uit p ac ks did not insert) and the c onnec ted SNI is not func tioning prop erly. a. Run the test board UUCSS c ommand on the PPN EI and fix any p rob lems found . b . Perform the manual loop b ac k p roc ed ure for the PPN EI. c . Perform the manual loop b ac k p roc ed ure for the SNI c onnec ted to t h e PPN EI . d . Rep lac e the ac tive SNC.

Run the test board UUCSS long c ommand on the SNIs in the first switc h nod e c arrier that are c onnec ted to SNIs in the sec ond switc h nod e c arrier and fix any p roblems found . b . Rep lac e the ac tive SNC. c . Perform the manual loop b ac k p roc ed ure for the SNIs in the sec ond switc h nod e c arrier that are c onnec ted to SNIs in the first switc h nod e c arrier. 6. If software is unab le to c ommunic ate with an EPN EI, but c an c ommunic ate with the c onnec ted SNI: a. Run the test board UUCSS long c ommand on the c onnec ted SNI and fix any p rob lems found . b . Busyout the EI or SNI c irc uit p ac k (busyout board UUCSS ). 7. Disc onnec t the transmit and rec eive fib er p air from the fib er c onnec tors on the b ac k of the c ab inet. NOTE: Note whic h is the transmit and whic h is the rec eive sid e for p roper re-c onnec tion at the end of this p roc ed ure.
