Loading paper and specialty media This section explains how to load the standard and optional 500- and 2,000-sheet trays and the multipurpose feeder. It also includes information about paper orientation, setting the Paper Size and Paper Type, and linking and unlinking trays. Setting the printer to detect the paper size loaded in a tray Size sensing disables or enables auto‑size sensing on trays. Size sensing also lets the printer detect the difference between similar paper sizes that it otherwise cannot. The printer trays cannot distinguish the paper size when both A5 and Statement sizes or B5 and Executive sizes are loaded in the printer trays. From the Size Sensing menu, specify which size you want the printer to detect. Note: The multipurpose feeder does not use auto‑size sensing and can support both A5‑ and Statement‑size or B5‑ and Executive‑size print jobs. Configuring Universal paper settings The Universal Paper Size is a user‑defined setting that lets you print on paper sizes that are not preset in the printer menus. Set the Paper Size for the specified tray to Universal when the size you want is not available from the Paper Size menu. Then, specify all of the following Universal size settings for your paper: Units of measure (millimeters or inches) Portrait Width Portrait Height Feed Direction Note: The smallest supported Universal size is 98.4 x 89 mm (3.9 x 3.5 in.); the largest is 297 x 431.8 mm (11.7 x 17 in.). All 500‑sheet trays support the same paper sizes and types. Paper may be loaded in the trays in either the long‑edge or short‑edge orientation. 1Pull the tray completely out. 2Squeeze and slide the width and length guides to the correct positions for the paper size being loaded. 3Flex the sheets back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Do not fold or crease the paper. Straighten the edges on a level surface. 4Load the paper stack with the recommended print side faceup. Load the paper in either the long‑edge or short‑edge orientation as shown. Notes: Load sizes larger than A4 in the short‑edge orientation. Make sure the paper is below the max fill line located on the edge of the paper tray. Overloading the tray can cause paper jams and possible printer damage. Loading A5 or Statement paper sizes The printer trays cannot distinguish between A5‑ (148 x 210 mm) and Statement‑size (139.7 x 215.9 mm) paper when both sizes are loaded in the printer trays. From the Size Sensing menu, specify which size you want the printer to detect. Load either A5‑ or Statement‑size paper in the paper trays, but not both. Note: The multipurpose feeder does not use auto‑size sensing and can support both A5‑ and Statement‑size print jobs.
