4.If no jammed paper is visible in the tray area, open the print-cartridge door, remove the print cartridge, and pull down the upper media guid e. With both hands, grasp the jammed paper and slowly pull it out of the product. 5. Replace the print-cartridge, and close the print-cartridge door. Solve image-quality problems Printed page is different from what appeared onscreen Table 7-16 Printed page is different from what appeared onscreen ProblemCauseSolution Garbled, incorrect, or incomplete text The wrong printer driver might have been selected when the software was installed.Make sure that the appropriate printer driver is selected. If a specific file prints garbled text, there might be a problem with that specific file.Try printing from another file. If a specific program prints garbled text, there might be a problem with that program.Try printing from another software program. The USB cable might be loose or defective.● Disconnect the cable and reconnect it at both ends. ● Try a print job that you know works. ● If possible, attach the cable and product to another computer, and try printing a job that you know works. ● Try using a new USB 2.0 cable that is 3 m (10 ft) or less in length. ● Turn off the product and the computer. Remove the USB cable, and inspect both ends of the cable for damage. Reconnect the cable, making sure that the connections are tight. Make sure that the product is directly connected to the computer. Remove any switchboxes, tape backup drives, security keys, or any other devices that are attached between the USB port on the computer and the product. ProblemCauseSolution Missing graphics or text, or blank pagesThe file may contain blank pages.Make sure that your file does not contain blank pages. The sealing tape might still be in the print cartridge.Remove the print cartridge, and pull the tab on the end of the cartridge until the entire length of the tape is removed. Reinstall the print cartridge. To check the product, print a Demo page. The graphic settings in the product Properties might not be correct for the type of job that you are printing.Try a different graphic setting in the product Properties. The product may require cleaning.Clean the product, particularly the contacts between the print cartridge and the power supply. Page format is different from another HP LaserJet productIf you used an older or different HP LaserJet printer driver (product software) to create the document, or if the product Properties settings in the software are different, the page format might change when you try to print using your new printer driver or settings.●Create documents and print them using the same printer driver (product software) and product Properties settings regardless of which HP LaserJet product you use to print them. ● Change the resolution, paper size, font settings, and other settings. Graphics quality The graphics settings might be unsuitable for your print job. Check the graphic settings, such as resolution, in the product Properties and adjust them as necessary. Image defect examples This section provides information about identifying and correcting print defects. Light print or faded ● The print cartridge is nearing end of life. ● Redistribute the toner to extend the life. ● The media might not meet Hewlett-Packards media specifications (for example, the media is too moist or too rough). ● If the whole page is light, the print density adjustment is too light or EconoMode might be turned on. Toner specks ●The media might not meet Hewlett-Packards media specifications (for example, the media is too moist or too rough). ● The printer might need to be cleaned. ● The print cartridge might be defective. Dropouts ● A single sheet of media might be defective. Try reprinting the job. ● The media moisture content is uneven or the media has moist spots on its surface. Try printing with new media. ● The media lot is bad. The manufacturing processes can cause some areas to reject toner. Try a different type or brand of media. ● The print cartridge might be defective. Vertical lines The photosensitive drum inside the print cartridge has probably been scratched. Install a new HP print cartridge. Gray background ●Change the media to a lighter basis weight. ● Check the printers environment. Very dry (low humidity) conditions can increase the amount of background shading. ● The density setting might be too high. Adjust the density setting. ● Install a new HP print cartridge. Toner smear ●If toner smears appear on the leading edge of the media, the media guides might be dirty. Wipe the media guides with a dry, lint-free cloth. ● Check the media type and quality. ● The fuser temperature might be too low. In your printer driver, make sure the appropriate media type is selected. ● Try installing a new HP print cartridge. Loose toner ● The fuser temperature might be too low. In your printer driver, make sure the appropriate media type is selected. ● Clean the inside of the printer. ● Check the media type and quality. ● In your printer driver, make sure the appropriate media type is selected. ● Plug the printer directly into an AC outlet instead of into a power strip. Vertical repetitive defects ●The print cartridge might be damaged. If a repetitive mark occurs at the same spot on the page, install a new HP print cartridge. ● The internal parts might have toner on them. If the defects occur on the back of the page, the problem will probably correct itself after a few more printed pages. ● In your printer driver, make sure the appropriate media type is selected. Misformed characters ●If characters are improperly formed, producing hollow images, the media stock might be too slick. Try a different media. ● If characters are improperly formed, producing a wavy effect, the printer might need service. Print a configuration page. Page skew ●Make sure that the media is loaded correctly and the media guides are not too tight or too loose against the media stack. ● The input bin might be too full. ● Check the media type and quality. Curl or wave ● Check the media type and quality. Both high temperature and high humidity cause media to curl. ● The media might have been in the input tray too long. Turn over the stack of media in the tray. Also, try rotating the media 180° in the input tray. ● Open the straight-through output door and try printing straight through. ● The fuser temperature might be too high. In your printer driver, make sure the appropriate media type is selected. If the problem persists, select a media type that uses a lower fuser temperature, such as transparencies or light media. Wrinkles or creases ● Make sure that media is loaded properly. ● Check the media type and quality. ● Open the straight-through output door and try printing straight through. ● Turn over the stack of media in the tray. Also, try rotating the media 180° in the input tray. ● For envelopes, this can be c aused by air pockets inside the envelope. Remove the envelope, flatten the envelope, and try printing again. Toner scatter outline ●If large amounts of toner have scattered around the characters, the media might be resisting the toner. (A small amount of toner scatter is normal for laser printing.) Solve print-quality problems You can prevent most print-quality problems by following these guidelines. ● Configure the trays for the correct paper-type setting. See Configure trays (HP LaserJet P2050 Series Printers only) on page 43. ● Use paper that meets HP specifications. See Supported paper and print media on page 32 . ● Clean the product as necessary. See Clean the paper path (HP LaserJet P2050 Series Printers only) on page 70 . Print-quality problems associated with paper Some print-quality problems arise from using paper that does not me et HP specifications. ● The surface of the paper is too smooth. ● The moisture content of the paper is uneven, too hi gh, or too low. Use paper from a different source or from an unopened ream. ● Some areas of the paper reject toner. Use paper from a different source or from an unopened ream. ● The letterhead you are using is printed on rough paper. Use a smoother, xerographic paper. If this solves your problem, ask the supplier of your lett erhead to use paper that meets HP specifications. ● The paper is excessively rough. Use a smoother, xerographic paper. ● The paper is too heavy for the paper-type setting that you selected, so the toner is not fusing to the paper. Print-quality problems associ ated with the environment If the product is operating in excessively humid or dry conditions, verify that the printing environment is within specifications. See Operating environment on page 293. Print-quality problems associated with jams Make sure that all sheets are cleared from the paper path. ●If the product recently jammed, print two to three pages to clean the paper path. ● If the sheets do not pass through the fuser an d cause image defects on subsequent documents, print two to three pages to clean the paper path. Solve performance problems ProblemCauseSolution Pages print but are totally blank.The sealing tape might still be in the print cartridges.Verify that the sealing tape has been completely removed from the print cartridges. The document might contain blank pages.Check the document that you are printing to see if content appears on all of the pages. The product might be malfunctioning.To check the product, print a Configuration page. Pages print very slowly.Heavier paper types can slow the print job.Print on a different type of paper. Complex pages can print slowly.Proper fusing may require a slower print speed to ensure the best print quality. Pages did not print.The product might not be pulling paper correctly.Make sure paper is loaded in the tray correctly. The paper is jamming in the product.Clear the jam. See Jams on page 229. The USB cable might be defective or incorrectly connected.● Disconnect the USB cable at both ends and reconnect it. ● Try printing a job that has printed in the past. ● Try using a different USB cable. Other devices are running on your computer. The product might not share a USB port. If you have an external hard drive or network switchbox that is connected to the same port as the product, the other device might be interfering.
