Knowing When to Replace Ink Tank
It is necessary to identify the empty ink tank by checking the message displayed on the LCD and 
replace it.
The message  appears on the LCD when the ink level becomes low during printing.
zPress [OK] to continue printing.
z Press [Stop/Reset] to cancel the current print job.
The message  appears on the LCD when ink becomes empty during printing.
z If printing has not finished, you can continue  printing for a while by pressing [OK] with...

(A) Press the Open Button to open the Paper Output Tray if it does not open automatically.
3Open the Inner Cover.
4Push the tab (A) and remove the ink tank whose lamp is flashing red fast. Do not 
touch the Print Head Lock Lever (B). Remove only the ink tank.

If the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) is left open for more than 10 minutes, the Print Head 
Holder moves to the right. Close and reopen the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) to return the

5Prepare a replacement tank.
(1)Remove the new ink tank from its packaging, then pull the orange tape (A) toward the 
arrow so that the protective film does not re main on the air hole (C). Then remove the film 
(B).
(2) Remove the orange protective cap (D) from  the bottom of the ink tank and discard it.
Important
zHandle ink tanks carefully to avoid  staining clothing or the surrounding area.
z Discard empty ink tanks according to the loca l laws and regulations...

6Install the ink tank.
(1)Install the ink tank into the Print Head.
(2) Press on the   mark on the ink tank until  the ink tank snaps firmly into place.
(3) Ensure that the ink tank clicks into place and then its lamp lights red (A).
7Close the Inner Cover.
Important
zBe sure to remove the clear film from the in k tank in the exact order shown in step 5, as 
failure to follow this step may cause the  ink to leak and stain your clothes and hands.

8Slowly close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover). 
When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are Incorrect
When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect,  even if ink remains in the ink tanks, the Print 
Head nozzles are probably clogged. Follow t he procedures below to clean the nozzles.
If the ruled lines are shifted after running the Print Head maintenance, align the Print Head.

Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern
Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether  the ink ejects properly from the Print Head 
nozzles and to verify Print Head alignment. Use this  function when printed results are blurred or the 
color is incorrect.
1Press [ON/OFF] to turn on  the machine, then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized 
plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette.

3Check the status of the Print Head.
After Print Head cleaning finishes, the nozzle check confirmation screen is displayed. Print 
the nozzle check pattern to verify that  the Print Head nozzles are clean. See  “Printing the 
Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 104 .
Print Head Deep Cleaning
If print quality does not improve by standard  Print Head cleaning, try Print Head deep cleaning, 
which is a more powerful process. Print Head deep cleaning consumes more ink than standard...

Print Head alignment is performed automatically. However, you can align the Print Head manually if 
the results of automatic Print Head alignment are not satisfactory (See  “Adjusting the Print Head 
Manually” on page 117 ).
1Press [ON/OFF] to turn on the machine.

„Cleaning the ADF
Wipe off any paper dust from the inside of the Feed er Cover as illustrated by gray colored part, 
with a soft, clean, lint-free and dry cloth.
„ Cleaning the Roller (Roller Cleaning)
Clean the paper feed rollers if paper is not fed pr operly. Cleaning the paper feed rollers will wear 
the rollers, so perform this only when necessary.
1Press [ON/OFF] to turn on  the machine, then remove any paper from the Auto 
Sheet Feeder and Cassette.
