    Clean the printer regularly to maintain better printing quality and help prevent problems.
    About once a month, clean the printer exterior.

    Turn the printer off.   (See "Turning the Printer On and Off .")→P.21

    Unplug the power cord from the outlet.
    Caution•Always turn off the printer and unplug the power cord before cleaning or maintenance. Accidentally leaving the print-er on poses a risk of injury if you touch moving parts inside the printer.3
     
    Using a damp cloth that you have wrung out completely,
    wipe the exterior surfaces of the printer. Dry the surfa-
    ces with a dry cloth.
    Warning•Never use flammable solvents such as alcohol, benzene, or thinner. If these substances come into contact with elec-trical components inside the printer, there is a risk of fire or electrical shock.Important•If the Ejection Guide is dirty, it may soil the edge of the paper when the paper is cut. We recommend cleaning theEjection Guide even if it does not appear dirty, because it may actually be covered with paper dust.4
    Plug the power cord into the outlet.

    Clean inside the Top Cover about once a month to maintain better printing quality and help prevent problems.
    Also clean inside the Top Cover in the following situations to ensure optimal operation.
    •
    If the printed surface or the underside of paper is dirty after printing
    •
    After you have used up a roll
    •
    After borderless printing
    •
    After printing on small paper
    •
    After printing on paper that generates a lot of cutting debris
    •
    If you have replaced the roll
    •
    After printing on paper that generates a lot of paper dust
    •
    If the message " Blue platen switch is dirty. " is displayed

    							Important•If the Platen inside the Top Cover becomes dirty, it may soil the underside of paper. We recommend cleaning the Platen afterborderless printing or printing on small paper.•If the Ejection Guide is dirty, it may soil the edge of the paper when the paper is cut. We recommend cleaning the EjectionGuide even if it does not appear dirty, because it may actually be covered with paper dust.1
     
    On the  Tab Selection screen  of the Control Panel, press  ◀ or  ▶ to se-
    lect the Settings/Adj. tab (
    ).

    •If the Tab Selection screen is not displayed, press the Menu button.2
    Press the  OK button.
    The  Set./Adj. Menu  is displayed.

    A message on the Display Screen requests you to open the Top Cover.

    If paper dust has accumulated in the Vacuum holes (a)
    on the Platen or in the Borderless Printing Ink Grooves (b), use the Cleaning Brush (c), provided with the printer,to wipe it away.
    Note
    •If the Cleaning Brush is dirty, rinse it in water.7
     
    Using a damp cloth that you have wrung out complete-
    ly, wipe inside the Top Cover to clean it. Wipe away
    any ink residue on the Platen (a) as a whole, on the Pa-
    per Retainer (b), Borderless Printing Ink Grooves (c), and blue Switch (d).
    Warning•Never use flammable solvents such as alcohol, benzene, or thinner. If these substances come into contact with elec-trical components inside the printer, there is a risk of fire or electrical shock.

    							Important•Do not use a dry cloth to wipe inside the Top Cover. This may create a static charge, which may attract dust andaffect the printing quality.•Do not touch the Linear Scale (a) or Carriage Shaft (b).This may stain your hands and damage the printer. 8

    Cleaning the Paper Retainer
    Clean the Paper Retainer about once a month to maintain better printing quality and help prevent problems.
    Also clean the Paper Retainer in the following situations to ensure optimal operation.
    •
    If the printed surface or the underside of paper is dirty after printing
    •
    After printing on small paper
    Important•During cleaning, use paper that does not generate much cutting dust, such as Plain Paper. It may affect printing quality ifyou use film or other media that are more likely to generate debris when cut, or that have a surface finish that may come off.1
    Turn the printer off.   (See "Turning the Printer On and Off .")→P.21

    Fold a sheet of  Plain Paper two or three times (a) and
    insert it under the Paper Retainer (b) from behind the
    printer to wipe the entire surface of the Paper Retainer
    clean.

    Carrying the Printer
    This section describes how to carry the printer or move the printer while mounted on the optional stand mainly within
    the same building.
    Important•When carrying the printer or moving the printer while mounted on the stand, do not tilt the printer. The ink may spill internallyand stain the surroundings.
    Note
    •When transporting the printer, operations such as drawing out the ink are required. Execute preparations for transportingwhen transporting the printer. (See "Preparing to Transfer the Printer.")→P.869•For details information on the operation, see the Setup Guide included with the printer or options.

    Move the Locking Caster switch on the Stand to ON to lock
    the Stand.

    							Caution•Moving the printer requires at least three people, holding it on both sides and from behind. Be careful to avoid backstrain and other injuries.•When moving the printer, firmly grasp the Carrying Handlesunder each side and in back. The printer may be unsteady ifyou hold it at other positions, which poses a risk of injury fromdropping the printer.

    Move the Locking Caster switch on the Stand to OFF to un-
    lock and move the printer.
    Important•When moving the Stand, always unlock by moving the Locking Caster switch to OFF. Moving the Stand with theLocking Caster locked may scratch the floor.6
    Move the Locking Caster switch on the Stand to ON to lock the Stand.

    Connect the power cord to the Power Supply Connector on the
    back of the printer.

    Connect the interface cable to the printer.

    Plug the power cord into the outlet.

    Preparing to Transfer the Printer
    To protect the internal parts in transit, always follow these steps before transferring the printer to a new location.
    Important•Avoid tilting the printer excessively during transit. This may cause ink in the printer to leak and cause stains. If it is necessaryto tilt the printer in transit, contact your Canon dealer.

    Important•If consumables must be replaced, the message "Consumables must be replaced. Call for service." is shown onthe Display Screen and preparation is not possible. If this message is displayed, press the OK button and contactyour Canon dealer for assistance.
