331 If a problem occurs with the camera, first refer to this Troubleshooting Guide. If this Troubleshooting Guide does not resolve the problem, contact your dealer or nearest Canon Service Center. Do not recharge any battery pack ot her than a genuine Canon Battery Pack LP-E12. If the battery charger has a problem, the protection circuit will stop the charging and the charge lamp will blink in orange. If this happens, unplug the charger’s power plug from the power outlet and detach the battery pack. Attach the battery pack to the charger again and wait a while before connecting the char ger to a power outlet again. Make sure the battery is properly installed in the camera (p.32). Make sure the card slot/battery compartment cover is closed (p.32). Recharge the battery (p.30). Press the < B> button (p.50). If the power is turned off while an image is being recorded to the card, the access lamp will remain on/con tinue to blink for a few seconds. When the image recording is comple ted, the power will turn off automatically. Troubleshooting Guide Power-Related Problems The battery pack does not recharge. The battery charger’s lamp blinks. The camera does not operate even when the power switch is set to < 1>. The access lamp still blinks even when the power switch is set to < 2>. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 332 Use a fully-charged battery pack (p.30). The rechargeable battery pack performance will degrade over repeated use. Purchase a new one. The number of possible shots will decrease with any of the following operations: • Pressing the shutter button halfway for a prolonged period. • Often activating only the AF without taking a picture. • Using the lens’ Image Stabilizer. • Using the LCD monitor often. • Continuing Live View shooting or movie shooting for a prolonged period. Auto power off is in effect. If y ou do not want auto power off to take effect, set [ 52: Auto power off ] to [Disable ] (p.217). Even if [ 52: Auto power off ] is set to [Disable], the LCD monitor will still turn off after the camera is le ft idle for 30 min. (The camera’s power does not turn off.) Press the < B> button to turn on the LCD monitor. The camera cannot be used with EF-M lenses (p. 40). The battery becomes exhausted quickly. The camera turns off by itself. Shooting-Related Problems The lens cannot be attached. COPY
333 Troubleshooting Guide Make sure the card is properly inserted (p.32). Slide the card’s write-protect switch to the write/erase position (p.32). If the card is full, replace the card or delete unnecessary images to make space (p.32, 268). If you try to focus in the One- Shot AF mode while the focus confirmation light < o> in the viewfinder blin ks, a picture cannot be taken. Press the shutter button halfw ay again to refocus automatically, or focus manually (p.43, 107). If a card error message is displayed, see page 34 or 343. Set the lens focus mode switch to < AF> (p.40). To prevent camera shake, press t he shutter button gently (p.42, 43). If the lens has an Image Stabilizer, set the IS switch to < 1>. In low light, the shutter speed may become slow. Use a faster shutter speed (p.114), set a higher ISO speed (p.98), use flash (p.111), or use a tripod. Set the AF operation to One-Shot AF . Focus lock is not possible in the AI Servo AF mode, or when servo ta kes effect in AI Focus AF mode (p.103). No images can be shot or recorded. The card cannot be used. The image is out of focus. I cannot lock the focus and recompose the shot. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 334 Horizontal stripes (noise) or irregular exposures can be caused by fluorescent light, LED bulbs, or other light sources during viewfinder or Live View shooting. Also, the expos ure or color tone may not come out right. A slow shutter s peed may solve the problem. During viewfinder shooting or Live View shooting, if you use a TS-E lens (except the TS-E17mm f/4L or TS -E24mm f/3.5L II) and shift or tilt the lens or use an Extension Tube , the standard exposure may not be obtained or the exposure may be irregular. Depending on the lens type, shutter speed, aperture, subject conditions, brightness, etc., the continuous shooting speed may become slower. With ISO 12800 or “ H” (equivalent to ISO 25600), the maximum burst for continuous shooting will greatly decrease (p.99). Set [ z3: High ISO speed NR] to [ Standard/Low/Disable]. If it is set to [High ] or if [Multi Shot Noise Reduction ] is set, the maximum burst during continuous shooting will greatly decrease (p.131). With [Chromatic aberration: Enable ], the maximum burst for continuous shooting will gr eatly decrease (p.135). During WB bracketing, the maximum burst for continuous shooting will decrease (p.145). If you shoot something that has fine detail (such as a field of grass), the file size will be larger and the actual maximum burst may be lower than the number mentioned on page 95. Horizontal stripes appear, or th e exposure or color tone look strange. The standard exposure cannot be obtained or the exposure is irregular. The continuous shooting speed is slow. The maximum burst during cont inuous shooting is lower. COPY
335 Troubleshooting Guide Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], ISO 100 cannot be set. If [ 0: Disable] is set, ISO 100 can be set (p.301). This also a pplies to movie shooting (p.186). Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], the [H] ISO speed (equivalent to ISO 25600) cannot be selected even when [ 2: ISO expansion] is set to [1: On]. If [ 0: Disable ] is set for [ 3: Highlight tone priority ], [H] can be set (p.301). Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. If [ 0: Disable ] is set, the Auto Lighting Optimizer can be set (p.301). Set [ z2: Auto Lighting Optimizer ] to [Disable ]. When [Standard/ Low/High ] is set, even if you set a decreased exposure compensation or flash exposure compensation, the image may come out bright (p.130). If you shoot at night when the backg round is dark, the shutter speed becomes slow automatically (slow- sync shooting) so that both the subject and background are properly exposed. To prevent a slow shutter speed, under [ z2: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [1/200-1/60 sec. auto ] or [1/200 sec. (fixed) ] (p.232). ISO 100 cannot be set. ISO speed [H] (equivalent to ISO 25600) cannot be set. The Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. Even though I set a decrease d exposure compensation, the image comes out bright. When I use the < f> mode with flash, the shutter speed becomes slow. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 336 In shooting modes ( < 6>) whose default setting is (Auto flash), the built-in flash will rise automatically when necessary. If you shoot continuously with the bui lt-in flash at short intervals, the flash may stop operating to protect the flash unit. If you use a flash unit other than an EX-series Speedlite, the flash will always be fired at full output (p.312). Under [ z2: Flash control ] and [External flash C.Fn setting ], if [ Flash metering mode ] is set to [TTL], the flash will always fire at full output (p.233). If flash exposure compensation has already been set with the external Speedlite, flash exposure com pensation cannot be set with the camera. When the external Speedlit e’s flash exposure compensation is canceled (set to 0), flash ex posure compensation can be set with the camera. Under [ z2: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [ Auto ] (p.232). The built-in flash’s pop-up mechanism moves slightly. This is normal and not a malfunction. The built-in flash is raised by itself. The built-in flash does not fire. The flash always fires at full output. I cannot set flash exposure compensation when using an external Speedlite. High-speed sync cannot be set in the < f> mode. The camera makes a noise when it is shaken. COPY
337 Troubleshooting Guide If you use flash, the shutter will make two sounds each time you shoot (p.151). Depending on the shooting conditions, focusing the subject may take longer. Either use FlexiZone - Single or focus manually. It indicates that the camera’s intern al temperature is high. If the white icon is displayed, the still phot o’s image quality may deteriorate. If the red < E> icon is displayed, it indica tes that the Live View or movie shooting will soon stop automatically (p.178, 212). If the card’s writing speed is slow, movie shooting may stop automatically. Use an SD Speed Class 6 “ ” or faster card. To find out the card’s reading/writ ing speed, refer to the card manufacturer’s Web site, etc. If the movie shooting time reaches 29 min. 59 sec., the movie shooting will stop automatically. In shooting modes other than , the ISO speed is set automatically. In the < a> mode, you can freely set the ISO speed (p.186). The shutter makes two shooting sounds during Live View shooting. With FlexiZone - Multi, it takes longer to autofocus. During Live View and movie shooting, a white < s> or red < E > icon is displayed. Movie shooting stops by itself. The ISO speed cannot be set for movie shooting. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 338 If you change the shutter speed or aperture during movie shooting, the changes in the exposu re may be recorded. Zooming the lens during movie s hooting can cause changes in the exposure regardless of whether the lens’ maximum aperture changes or not. The changes in the expos ure may be recorded as a result. If you move the camera to the left or right quickly (high-speed panning) or shoot a moving subject, t he image may look distorted. Flickering, horizontal stripes (noise ), or irregular exposures can be caused by fluorescent light, LED bulbs, or other light sources during movie shooting. Also, changes in t he exposure (brightness) or color tone may be reco rded. In the mode, a slow shutter speed may solve the problem. Check if your finger is blocking the speaker (p.22). Check if [ 53: Touch control ] is set to [Standard] or [Sensitive ] (p.55). The exposure changes during movie shooting. The subject looks distorted during movie shooting. The image flickers or horizontal stripes appear during movie shooting. Operation Problems During touch screen operations, the beeper suddenly sounds softer. Touch screen operation is not possible. 339 Troubleshooting Guide In Basic Zone modes and in movie shooting mode, certain tabs and menu options are not displayed. Se t the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode (p.46). Set the color space to sRGB. If Adobe RGB is set, the first character will be an underscore (p.146). It is a movie file (p.222). If the card already contains re corded images, the image number may not start from 0001 (p.221). Make sure the correct date and time has been set (p.37). Check the time zone and daylight saving time (p.37). The shooting date and time does not appear in the picture. The date and time is instead recorded in the image data as shooting information. When printing, you can imprint the date and time in the picture by using the date and time recorded in the shooting information \ (p.287). Display Problems The menu screen shows few tabs and options. The file name’s first charac ter is an underscore (“_”). The file name starts with “MVI_”. The file numbering does not start from 0001. The shooting date and time displayed is incorrect. The date and time is not in the picture. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 340 If the card has recorded a number of images greater than the camera can display, [ ###] will be displayed (p.249). If the LCD monitor is dirty, use a soft cloth to clean it. In low or high temperatures, the LCD monitor display may seem slow or may look black. It will return to normal at room temperature. [Eye-Fi settings ] will appear only when an Ey e-Fi card is inserted in the camera. If the Eye-Fi card has a write-protect switch set to the LOCK position, you will not be abl e to check the card’s connection status or disable Eye- Fi transmission (p.313). It is the highlight alert (p.272). Overexposed highl ight areas with a loss of highlight detail will blink. If the image is protected, it cannot be erased (p.266). Movies edited with a computer us ing the provided ImageBrowser EX (p.366) or other software cannot be played back with the camera. However, video snapshot albums edited with EOS Video Snapshot Task (p.206) can be played on the camera. [###] is displayed. The LCD monitor does not display a clear image. [Eye-Fi settings] does not appear. Playback Problems Part of the image blinks in black. The image cannot be erased. The movie cannot be played back. COPY
