111 In indoors, low light, or backlit conditions in daylight, just raise the built- in flash and press the shutter button to take flash pictures. In the mode, the shutter speed (1/60 sec. - 1/200 sec.) will be set automatically to prevent camera shake. 1Press the < D> button. In Creative Zone modes, you can press the < D> button anytime to take flash pictures. While the flash is recycling, “ DbuSY” is displayed in the viewfinder, and [BUSYD ] is displayed on the LCD monitor. 2Press the shutter button halfway. In the bottom left of the viewfinder, check that the < D> icon is lit. 3Take the picture. When focus is achieved and you press the shutter button completely, the flash will fire for the picture. D Using the Built-in Flash 112 If the subject is far away, increase the ISO speed (p.98). By increasing the ISO speed, you can extend the flash range. In bright light, decrease the ISO speed. If the exposure setting in the vi ewfinder blinks, decrease the ISO speed. Detach the lens hood. Do not get too close to the subject. If the lens has a hood attached or you are too close to the subject, the bottom of the picture may look dark due to the obstructed flash. For important shots, check the im age on the LCD monitor to make sure the flash exposure looks natural (not dark at the bottom). Using the red-eye reduction lamp before taking a flash picture can reduce red eye. Red-eye reduction will function in any shooting mode except , , < 5>, < x>, or < G>. Under the [z 1] tab, select [Red-eye reduc. ], then press < 0>. Select [Enable ], then press . For flash photography, when you press the shutter button halfway, the red-eye reduction lamp will light up. Then when you press the shutter button completely, the picture will be taken. Shooting Tips 3 Red-eye Reduction The red-eye reduction feature is most effective when the subject looks at the red-eye reduction lamp, when the room is well lit, or when you are close to the subject. When you press the shut ter button halfway, the scale display on the botto m of the viewfinder will shrink and turn off. For bes t results, take the picture after this scale display turns off. The effectiveness of red-eye reductio n varies depending on the subject. COPY
113 Advanced Shooting This chapter builds on Chapter 3 and introduces more ways to shoot creatively. The first half of this chapte r explains how to use the < s>, < f >, and < a> modes on the Mode Dial. All the functions explained in C hapter 3 can also be used in the < s>, < f >, and < a> modes. To see which functions can be used in each shooting mode, see page 316. The M icon at the upper right of the page title indicates that the function is available only in Creative Zone modes (p.26). The pointer icon displayed together with the shutter speed, aperture setting, or exposure compensation amount indicates that you can turn the < 6 > dial to adjust the respective setting. c Main Dial Pointer COPY
114 You can either freeze the action or create motion blur with the (Shutter-priority AE) mode on the Mode Dial. * < s> stands for Time value. 1Set the Mode Dial to < s>. 2Set the desired shutter speed. See “Shooting Tips” for advice on setting the shutter speed. Turning the < 6> dial to the right sets a faster shutter speed, and turning it to the left sets a slower one. 3Take the picture. When you focus and press the shutter button completely, the picture will be taken at the selected shutter speed. s: Conveying the Subject’s Movement Blurred motion (Slow shutter speed: 1/30 sec.) Frozen action (Fast shutter speed: 1/2000 sec.) Shutter Speed Display The LCD monitor displays the shutter speed as a fraction. However, the viewfinder displays on ly the denominator. “05” indicates 0.5 sec. and “ 15” is 15 sec. COPY
115 s: Conveying the Subject’s Movement To freeze the motion of a fast-moving subject Use a fast shutter speed such as 1/4000 sec. to 1/500 sec. To blur a running child or animal and convey an impression of motion Use a medium shutter speed such as 1/250 sec. to 1/30 sec. Follow the moving subject through the vi ewfinder and press the shutter button to take the picture. If you use a telephoto lens, hold it steady to prevent camera shake. To blur a flowing river or fountain Use a slow shutter speed of 1/30 sec. or slower. Use a tripod to prevent hand-held camera shake. Set the shutter speed so that th e aperture display does not blink. If you press the shutter button halfway and change the shutter speed while the aperture is displayed, the aperture display will also change to maintain the same exposure (amount of light reaching the image sensor). If you exceed the adjustable aperture range, the aperture display will blink to indicate that the standard exposure cannot be obtained. If the exposure will be too dark, the maximum aperture (smallest number) will blink. If this happens, turn the < 6> dial to the left to set a slower shutter speed or increase the ISO speed. If the exposure will be too bright, the minimum aperture (highest number) will blink. If this happens, turn the < 6> dial to the right to set a faster shutter speed or decrease the ISO speed. To obtain a correct flash expos ure, the flash output will be set automatically (autoflash exposure) to match the automatically-set aperture. The shutter speed can be set from 1/200 sec. to 30 sec. 116 To blur the background or to make everything near and far look sharp, set the Mode Dial to (Aperture-priority AE) to adjust the depth of field (range of acceptable focus). *< f> stands for Aperture value, which is the size of the diaphragm hole inside the lens. 1Set the Mode Dial to < f>. 2Set the desired aperture. The higher the f/number, the wider the depth of field where sharpe r focus is obtained in both the foreground and background. Turning the dial to the right will set a higher f/number (smaller aperture opening), and turning it to the left will set a lower f/number (large r aperture opening). 3Take the picture. Focus and press the shutter button completely. The picture will be taken with the selected aperture. f: Changing the Depth of Field Sharp foreground and background (With a high aperture f/number: f/32)Blurred background (With a low aperture f/number: f/5.6) Aperture Display The higher the f/number, the smaller the aperture opening will be. The apertures displayed will differ depending on the lens. If no lens is attached to the camera, “ 00” will be displayed for the aperture. COPY
117 f: Changing the Depth of Field When using an aperture with a high f/number or shooting in low light scenes, note that camera shake can occur. A higher aperture f/number will ma ke the shutter speed slower. Under low light, the shutter speed ca n be as long as 30 sec. In such cases, increase the ISO speed and hol d the camera steady or use a tripod. The depth of field depends not onl y on the aperture, but also on the lens and on the subject distance. Since wide-angle lenses have a wide depth of field (range of acceptable focus in front of and beh ind the point of focus), you need not set a high aperture f/number to obtain a sharp picture from the foreground to the background. On the other hand, a telephoto lens has a narrow depth of field. And the closer the subject, the narro wer the depth of field. A farther subject will have a wider depth of field. Set the aperture so that the sh utter speed display does not blink. If you press the shutter button halfway and change the aperture while the shutter speed is displayed, the shutter speed display will also change to maintain the same exposure (amount of light reaching the image sensor). If you exceed the adjustable shutter speed range, the shutter speed display will blink to indicate that the standard exposure cannot be obtained. If the picture will be too dark, the “ 30” (30 sec.) shutter speed display will blink. If th is happens, turn the < 6> dial to the left to set a lower aperture f/number or increase the ISO speed. If the picture will be too bright, the “ 4000” (1/4000 sec.) shutter speed display will blink. If this happens, turn the < 6> dial to the right to set a higher aperture f/number or decrease the ISO speed. Shooting Tips COPY
f: Changing the Depth of Field 118 To obtain a correct flash expos ure, the flash output will be set automatically to match the set a perture (autoflash exposure). The shutter speed will be set automatically between 1/200 sec. - 30 sec. to suit the scene’s brightness. In low light, the main subject is ex posed with the auto flash metering, and the background is exposed with a slow shutter speed set automatically. Both the subject and background look properly exposed (automatic slow-speed flash sync) . If you are handholding the camera, keep it steady to prevent camera shake. Using a tripod is recommended. To prevent a slow shutter speed, under [ z2: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode] to [ 1/200-1/60 sec. auto] or [1/200 sec. (fixed) ] (p.232). The aperture opening (diaphragm) changes only at the moment when the picture is taken. Otherwise, the aperture remains fully open. Therefore, when you look at the sce ne through the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor, the depth of field will look narrow. Press the depth-of-field preview button to stop down the lens to the current aperture setting and check the depth of field (range of acceptable focus). D Using the Built-in Flash Depth-of-Field Preview N While looking at the Live View image (p.150) and ho lding down the depth-of- field preview button, you can change th e aperture and see how the depth of field changes. 119 You can set both the shutter speed and aperture manually as desired. While referring to the exposure level indicator in the viewfinder, you can set the exposure as desired. This method is called manual exposure. * < a> stands for Manual. 1Set the Mode Dial to < a>. 2Set the ISO speed (p.98). 3Set the shutter speed and aperture. To set the shutter speed, turn the dial. To set the aperture, hold down the button and turn the dial. 4Focus the subject. Press the shutter button halfway. X The exposure setting will be displayed in the viewfinder. The exposure level mark < h> indicates how far the current exposure level is from the standard exposure level. 5Set the exposure and take the picture. Check the exposure level indicator and set the desired shutter speed and aperture. If the exposure level exceeds ±2 stops from the standard exposure, the end of the exposure level indicator will display or < J> in the viewfinder. (On the LCD monitor, if the exposure level exceeds ±3 stops, or will be displayed.) a: Manual Exposure < 6 > < O > + < 6> Exposure level markStandard exposure index If ISO Auto is set, the IS O speed setting will change to suit the shutter speed and aperture in order to obtain a standard expos ure. Therefore, you may not obtain the desired exposure effect. COPY
a: Manual Exposure 120 To obtain a correct flash expos ure, the flash output will be set automatically (autoflash exposure) to match the manually-set aperture. The shutter speed can be set from 1/200 sec. to 30 sec or bulb. A bulb exposure keeps the shutter open for as long as you hold dow n the shutter button. It can be used to shoot fireworks and other subjects requiring long exposures. In step 3 on the preceding page, turn the < 6 > dial to the left to set < BULB>. The elapsed exposure time will be displayed on the LCD monitor. I Using the Built-in Flash BULB: Bulb Exposures In [z2: Auto Lighting Optimizer ], if the checkmark for [Disable during man expo ] is removed, the Auto Lighti ng Optimizer can be set in the < a> mode (p.130). When ISO Auto is set, you can press the button to lock the ISO speed. If you press the < A> button and recompose th e shot, you can see the exposure level difference on the ex posure level indicator (p.24, 25) compared to when the < A> button was pressed. During the bulb exposure, do not po int the lens toward the sun. The sun’s heat can dam age the camera’s in ternal components. Since bulb exposures produce more noise than usual, the image may look a little grainy. When [z 3: Long exp. noise reduction ] is set to [Auto] or [Enable ], noise generated by the long ex posure can be reduced (p.132). For bulb exposures, using a tripod an d a remote switch (sold separately, p.310) is recommended. You can also use a remote controller (sold separately, p.309) for bulb shooting. When you press the remote c ontroller’s transmit button, the bulb exposure will star t immediately or 2 sec. later. Press the button again to stop the bulb exposure. COPY
