231 The built-in flash and external Speedlite settings can be set with the camera’s menu. You can use the camera’s menu to set the external Speedlite function settings only if an EX-series Speedlite compatible with this function is attached. The setting procedure is the same as when setting a camera menu function. Select [Flash control]. Under the [ z2] tab, select [Flash control ], then press < 0>. X The flash control screen will appear. Normally, set this to [Enable ]. If [Disable] is set, neither the built- in flash nor the external Speedlite will fire. This is useful when you only want to use the flash’s AF-assist beam. For normal flash exposures, set this to [Evaluative]. [Average] is for advanced users. As with an external Speedlite, the metering area is averaged. Flash exposure compensation may be necessary. 3 Setting the Flash N [Flash firing] [E-TTL II meter.] Even if [Flash firing ] is set to [Disable], if focus is diffic ult to achieve in low light, the built-in flash may still fire a series of flashes (AF-assist beam, p.106). 3 Setting the Flash N 232 You can set the flash sync speed for flash photography in the aperture-priority AE (f) mode. : Auto The flash sync speed is set automatically within a range of 1/200 sec. to 30 sec. to suit the scene’s brightness. High-speed sync is also possible. : 1/200-1/60 sec. auto Prevents a slow shutter speed from being set in low-light conditions. It is effective for preventing subject blur and camera shake. However, while the subject will be properly exposed with the flash, the background may come out dark. : 1/200 sec. (fixed) The flash sync speed is fixed at 1/ 200 sec. This more effectively prevents subject blur and camera shake than with [ 1/200-1/60 sec. auto ]. However, in low light, the subject’s background will come out darker than with [ 1/200-1/60 sec. auto ]. [Flash sync. speed in Av mode] If [1/200-1/60 sec. auto] or [ 1/200 sec. (fixed)] is set, high-speed sync is not possible in the < f> mode. COPY
233 3 Setting the FlashN You can set the functions in the tabl e below. The functions displayed under [External flash func. setting] will vary depending on the Speedlite model. 3 Setting the Flash N 234 Flash mode When using an external Speedlite, you can select the flash mode to suit your desired flash shooting. [E-TTL II ] is the standard mode of EX-series Speedlites for automatic flash shooting. [Manual flash ] is for advanced users who want to set the [ Flash output] (1/128 to 1/1 ) themselves. Regarding other flash modes, refer to the instruction manual of an external Speedlite compatible with the functions. Shutter synchronization Normally, set this to [ 1st curtain] so that the flash fires immediately after the exposure starts. If [ 2nd curtain ] is set, the flash will fi re right before the shutter closes. When this is combined with a slow shutter speed, you can create a trail of light such as from car headlights at night. With E-TTL II (autoflash exposure), two flas hes will be fired: Once when you press the shutter button complete ly, and once immediately before the exposure ends. Also, with shutter speeds faster than 1/30 sec., 1st curtain synchronization will automatically take effect. If an external Speedlite is attached, you can also select [ Hi-speed] ( e ). For details, refer to the Speedlite’s instruction manual. Flash exposure compensation See “Flash Exposure Compensation” on page 124. COPY
235 3 Setting the FlashN The Custom Functions displayed under [ External flash C.Fn setting] will vary depending on the Speedlite model. 1Display the Custom Function. With the camera ready to shoot with an external Speedlite, select [External flash C.Fn setting ], then press < 0>. 2Set the Custom Function. Press the < Y> keys to select the function number, then set the function. The procedure is the same as setting the camera’s Custom Functions (p.298). 1Select [Clear settings]. 236 Whenever you set the power switch to or , the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit operates to aut omatically shake off the dust on the front of the sensor. Normally, you need not pay attention to this operation. However, you can choose to perform sensor cleaning at any time, or disable it. 1Select [Sensor cleaning]. Under the [ 53] tab, select [Sensor cleaning], then press < 0>. 2Select [Clean nowf]. Select [Clean now f], then press < 0 >. Select [OK ], then press < 0>. X The screen will indicate that the sensor is being cleaned. (A small sound may be heard.) Although there will be a shutter sound during the cleaning, no picture is taken. In step 2, select [ Auto cleaningf] and set it to [ Disable]. X The sensor cleaning will no lon ger be executed when you set the power switch to < 1> or < 2>. f Automatic Sensor Cleaning Cleaning the Sensor Now Disabling Automatic Sensor Cleaning For best results, perform the sensor cleaning with the camera placed upright and stable on a ta ble or other flat surface. Even if you repeat the sensor cleaning, the re sult will not improve much. Immediately after the sensor cleaning is finished, the [Clean now f] option will remain disabled temporarily. COPY
237 Normally, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit will eliminate most of the dust that may be visible on captured images . However, in case visible dust still remains, you can append the Du st Delete Data to the image for erasing the dust spots later. The Dust Delete Data is used by Digital Photo Professional (provided softwa re, p.366) to erase the dust spots automatically. Prepare a solid white object such as a sheet of paper. Set the lens focal length to 50 mm or longer. Set the lens focus mode switch to < MF> and set the focus to infinity ( ∞ ). If the lens has no distance scale, look at the front of the lens and turn the focusing ring clockwise all the way. 1Select [Dust Delete Data]. Under the [ z3] tab, select [Dust Delete Data ], then press < 0>. 2Select [OK]. Select [OK ] and press < 0>. After the automatic self-cleaning of the sensor is performed, a message will appear. Although there will be a shutter sound during the cleaning, no picture is taken. 3 Appending Dust Delete Data N Preparation Obtaining the Dust Delete Data COPY
3 Appending Dust Delete Data N 238 3Shoot a solid-white object. At a distance of 20 cm - 30 cm (0.7 ft. - 1.0 ft.), fill the viewfinder with a patternless, solid-white object and take a picture. X The picture will be taken in aperture- priority AE mode at an aperture of f/22. Since the image will not be saved, the data can still be obta ined even if there is no card in the camera. X When the picture is taken, the camera will start collecting the Dust Delete Data. When the Dust Delete Data is obtained, a message will appear. Select [OK ], and the menu will reappear. If the data was not obtained successfully, an error message will appear. Follow the “Preparation” procedure on the preceding page, then select [ OK]. Take the picture again. After the Dust Delete Data is obt ained, it is appended to all the JPEG and RAW images captured thereafter. Before an important shoot, it is recommended to update the Dust Delete Data by obtaining it again. For details about using Digital Phot o Professional (provided software, p.366) to erase dust spots, refer to the Software Instruction Manual (p.368) on the CD-ROM. The Dust Delete Data appended to the image is so small that it hardly affects the image file size. Dust Delete Data Be sure to use a solid-white object such as a new sheet of white paper. If the paper has any pattern or design, it ma y be recognized as dust data and affect the accuracy of the dust deletion with the provided software. COPY
239 Dust that could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with a commerciall y-available blower, etc. Before cleaning the sensor, detach the lens from the camera. The surface of the image sensor is extremely delicate. If the sensor needs to be cleaned directly, having it done by a Canon Service Center is recommended. 1Select [Sensor cleaning]. Under the [ 53] tab, select [Sensor cleaning], then press < 0>. 2Select [Clean manually]. Select [Clean manually], then press . 3Select [OK]. Select [OK ], then press < 0>. 3 Manual Sensor Cleaning N 240 While cleaning the sensor, never do any of the following. If the power is cut off, the shutter will close and the shutter curtains and image sensor may get damaged. • Setting the power switch to < 2>. • Opening the card slot/b attery compartment cover. The surface of the image sensor is extremely delicate. Clean the sensor with care. Use a plain blower without any brus h attached. A brush can scratch the sensor. Do not insert the blower tip inside th e camera beyond the lens mount. If the power is turned off, the shutter will close and the shutter curtains or reflex mirror may get damaged. Never use pressurized air or gas to clean the sensor. The blowing force can damage the sensor or the spray gas can freeze on the sensor and scratch it. If the battery level becomes low whil e you clean the sensor, the beeper will sound as a warning. Stop cleaning the sensor. If a smudge that cannot be removed with a blower remains, having the sensor cleaned by a Canon Se rvice Center is recommended. COPY
