    							17 - 27TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
    Follow these steps to replace the drum unit:
    1Open the front cover.
    2Remove the old drum unit.                   
    Place the drum unit on a drop
    cloth or disposable
    paper to avoid scattering toner.
    3Hold down the lock lever on the

    right and pull the toner cartridge
    out of the drum unit assembly.
    (See Replacing the Toner
    Cartridge, page 17-23.)
    Discard the used drum unit according to local regulations.  If you are not
    sure of them, call your local Sanitation Department.  Be sure to seal the
    drum unit tightly so toner powder does not spill out of the unit.  When
    discarding used drum units, keep them separate from domestic garbage.
    4Wait to unpack the new drum unit until immediately before installing it.
    Place the old drum unit into the aluminium bag and discard it according to
    local regulations.
    5Reinstall the toner cartridge into the new drum unit. (See Replacing the
    Toner Cartridge, page 17-23.)
    6Reinstall the new drum unit, keeping the front cover open.
    7Press Clear.
    8Press 1 and when the display showsREPLACE DRUM?
    1.YES  2.NOACCEPTED, and close the front cover.
    Caution
    If toner scatters and your hands or clothes get dirty, immediately wipe off
    or wash with cold water.
    Checking the Drum Life
    You can see the percentage of the drumÕs life that remains available.
    1For the FAX, press Function, 0, 4.
    For the MFC, press Function, 1, 0, 4.
    2For five seconds, the screen displays theDRUM LIFE
    REMAINING:70%available percentage of drum life.
    Even if the remaining drum life is 0%, you may continue to use the drum
    unit until you have a print quality problem.

    Macintosh G3 or iMac with Mac OS 8.5/8.6
    This chapter is for the MFC 8300. If you have a MFC 8600 or MFC 8700,
    please see the Multi-Function Center Software Manual.
    The connection, installation and operation instructions are available on
    the bundled CD-ROM for your USB equipped Apple Macintosh or iMac
    with Mac OS 8.5/8.6.
    1Set up your MFC and make sure that it is working properly.
    2Unplug the MFCÕs AC power cord and turn off the AC power to your
    Macintosh or iMac.
    3Connect a standard USB cable to both the MFC and Macintosh or iMac.
    Install Brother Printer Driver for MFC 8300
    1Turn on the power to your Macintosh G3 or iMac and wait for the startup
    process to be completed.
    2Plug in the MFC power cord to turn it on.
    3Insert the Brother CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
    The Brother icon will appear on the desk top.
    4Double-click the Brother icon to open the CD.
    5Double-click the Brother icon again to run Start.
    The screen of Brother options will appear:

    6Click Install MFC Print Driver to begin the installation and follow the
    instructions on the screen.
    7After you have installed the Driver, click View On-Line Documentation
    for operation instructions.
    Restart your Macintosh/iMac so it recognizes the new drivers.
