130 Jam InsideThe paper is jammed inside the machine. (See Paper jams on page 135.) Jam MP Tray The paper is jammed in the MP tray of the machine. (See Paper jams on page 135.) Jam Rear The paper is jammed in the back of the machine. (See Paper jams on page 135.) Jam Tray 1 Jam Tray 2 (MFC-8380DN) The paper is jammed in the paper tray of the machine. (See Paper jams on page 135.) No Paper The machine is out of paper or paper is not correctly loaded in the paper tray. Do one of the following: „ Refill the paper in the paper tray or MP tray. „ Remove the paper and load it again. No Response/Busy The number you dialled does not answer or is busy. Verify the number and try again. No Toner The toner cartridge or the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly is not installed properly. Re-install the toner cartridge or the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. No Tray The paper tray is not completely closed. Close the paper tray properly. Out of Memory The machine’s memory is full. Fax sending or copy operation in progress Do one of the following: „ Press Start to send or copy the scanned pages. „ Press Stop/Exit and wait until the other operations in progress finish, and then try again. „ Clear the data from the memory. (See Out of memory message on page 46 or page 86.) Print operation in process Do one of the following: „ Reduce print resolution. (See Advanced tab in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) „ Clear the faxes from the memory. (See Out of memory message on page 86.) Output Tray Full The ADF output tray has reached its maximum capacity. Remove the scanned pages from the ADF output tray. If you want to scan the remaining pages of your documents, dial the fax number (if you are sending a fax) and press Start . Error MessageCauseAction
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance131 C Print Unable XXThe machine has a mechanical problem. Disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes, then reconnect it. (The machine can be turned off for up to 60 hours without losing faxes stored in the memory. See Transferring your faxes or Fax Journal report on page 133.) Protected Device The protect switch of the USB Flash memory drive is on. Turn off the protect switch of the USB Flash memory drive. Rename the File There is already a file on the USB Flash memory drive with the same name as the file you are trying to save. Change the file name of the file on the USB Flash memory drive or the file you are trying to save. Replace Drum The drum unit is at the end of its life. Replace the drum unit with a new one. (See Replacing the drum unit on page 153.) The drum unit counter was not reset when a new drum was installed. 1 Open the front cover, and then press Clear/Back . 2 Press 1 to reset. Replace Fuser It is time to replace the fuser unit. Call your Brother dealer to replace the fuser unit. Replace Laser It is time to replace the laser unit. Call your Brother dealer to replace the laser unit. Replace PF Kit1 It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for Tray 1. Call your Brother dealer to replace the PF Kit 1. Replace PF Kit2 (MFC-8380DN) It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for Tray2. Call your Brother dealer to replace the PF Kit 2. Replace PF KitMP It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for the MP tray. Call your Brother dealer to replace the PF Kit MP. Replace Toner The toner cartridge is at the end of its life and printing is not possible. Replace the toner cartridge with a new one. (See Replacing a toner cartridge on page 150) Scan Unable XX The machine has a mechanical problem. Disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes, then reconnect it. (The machine can be turned off for up to 60 hours without losing faxes stored in the memory. See Transferring your faxes or Fax Journal report on page 133.) Size mismatch The paper in the tray is not the correct size. Load the correct size of paper in the tray and set the “Paper Size” ( Menu, 1, 2, 2 (See Paper Size on page 23)). Toner Low If the LCD shows Toner Low, you can still print; however, the machine is telling you that the toner cartridge is near the end of its life and the toner will soon need replacing. Order a new toner cartridge now. Error MessageCauseAction
132 Too Many FilesThere are too many files stored on the USB Flash memory drive. Reduce the number of files stored on the USB Flash memory drive. Too Many Trays (MFC-8380DN) More than one optional tray is installed. The maximum number of optional trays is one. Remove any additional trays. Unable to Scan. There is a document in the ADF input and output tray. Remove the document from the ADF output tray. Unusable Device An incompatible or broken device has been connected to the USB direct interface. Remove the USB Flash memory drive from the USB direct interface. Error MessageCauseAction
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 133 C Transferring your faxes or Fax Journal reportC If the LCD shows: „Print Unable XX „Scan Unable XX We recommend transferring your faxes to another fax machine or to your PC. (See Transferring faxes to another fax machine on page 133 or Transferring faxes to your PC on page 133.) You can also transfer the Fax Journal report to see if there are any faxes you need to transfer. (See Transferring Fax Journal report to another fax machine on page 133.) Note If there is an error message on the machine’s LCD, after the faxes have been transferred, disconnect the machine from the power source for several minutes, and then reconnect it. Transferring faxes to another fax machine C If you have not set up your Station ID, you cannot enter fax transfer mode. (See Setting your station ID in the Quick Setup Guide.) aPress Menu, 9, 0, 1. bDo one of the following: „If the LCD shows No Data, there are no faxes left in the machine’s memory. Press Stop/Exit. „Enter the fax number to which faxes will be forwarded. cPress Start. Transferring faxes to your PCC You can transfer the faxes from your machine’s memory to your PC. aMake sure that you have installed MFL-Pro Suite on your PC, and then turn on PC-Fax Receiving on the PC. (For details about PC Fax Receive, see PC-FAX receiving in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) bMake sure that you have set PC Fax Receive on the machine. (See PC Fax Receive on page 66.) If faxes are in the machine’s memory when you set up PC Fax Receive, the LCD will ask if you want to transfer the faxes to your PC. cDo one of the following: „To transfer all faxes to your PC, press 1. You will be asked if you want a backup print. „To exit and leave the faxes in the memory, press 2. dPress Stop/Exit. Transferring Fax Journal report to another fax machine C If you have not set up your Station ID, you cannot enter fax transfer mode. (See Setting your station ID in the Quick Setup Guide.) aPress Menu, 9, 0, 2. bEnter the fax number to which the Fax Journal report will be forwarded. cPress Start.
134 Document jamsC If the document is jammed, follow the steps below. IMPORTANT After removing a jammed document, check that no paper scraps are left in the machine that could cause another jam. Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bOpen the ADF cover. cPull the jammed document out to the right. dClose the ADF cover. ePress Stop/Exit. Document is jammed under the document cover C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bLift the document cover. cPull the jammed document out to the left. dClose the document cover. ePress Stop/Exit. Document is jammed at the ADF output tray C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bPull the jammed document out to the right. cPress Stop/Exit.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 135 C Document is jammed in the duplex slot (MFC-8380DN) C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bDo one of the following: „If you can see the jammed document, pull the jammed document out to the right. „If you cannot see the jammed document, open the ADF cover (1) and (2) and pull the jammed document out to the top. Close the ADF cover (1) and (2). cPress Stop/Exit. Paper jamsC To clear paper jams, please follow the steps in this section. IMPORTANT Please confirm that you have installed both a toner cartridge and a drum unit in the machine. If you have not installed a drum unit or have installed the drum unit incorrectly, then this may cause a paper jam in your Brother machine. Note If the error message remains, open and close the front cover and fuser cover firmly to reset the machine. IMPORTANT To prevent damage to the machine caused by static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. Note The LCD names for the paper trays are as follows: • Standard paper tray: Tray 1 • Optional lower tray: Tray 2 (MFC-8380DN) • Multi-purpose tray: MP Tray 12
136 Paper is jammed in the MP trayC If the LCD shows Jam MP Tray, follow these steps: aRemove the paper from the MP tray. bRemove any jammed paper from in and around the MP tray. cPress Start. dFan the paper stack, and then put it back in the MP tray. eWhen loading paper in the MP tray, make sure that the paper stays under the maximum paper height guides on both sides of the tray. Paper is jammed in Paper Tray 1 or Tray 2 (MFC-8380DN) C If the LCD shows Jam Tray 1 or Jam Tray 2, follow these steps: aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. For Jam Tray 1: For Jam Tray 2: bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 137 C cMake sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (b) of the paper tray. While pressing the blue paper- guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. dPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. IMPORTANT DO NOT take out the standard paper tray while paper is feeding from a lower paper tray as this will cause a paper jam. Paper is jammed inside the machineC aUnplug the telephone line cord first, disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. cUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper. dPress the front cover release button and open the front cover. CAUTION HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. Wait at least 10 minutes for the machine to cool down before attempting to clear the paper jam.
138 eSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper may be pulled out with the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening. IMPORTANT We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. fPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. gClose the front cover. hPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. iPlug the machine’s power cord back into the electrical socket first, and reconnect all cables and telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch. Paper is jammed inside the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly C aUnplug the telephone line cord first, disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPress the front cover release button and open the front cover.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 139 C CAUTION HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. Wait at least 10 minutes for the machine to cool down before attempting to clear the paper jam. cSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. IMPORTANT We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. dPush down the blue lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Take out the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. IMPORTANT • Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. • To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations below. eClear the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. fPut the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in correctly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically. gPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. hClose the front cover. iPlug the machine’s power cord back into the electrical socket first, and reconnect all cables and telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch.
