The Alarm Indicator is On or Flashing
The red alarm indicator on the control panel indicates that there is a problem with the printer. Refer to 
the sections below.
The Alarm Lamp is On
When the alarm lamp is on, it indicates a paper jam or other problem that you can rectify yourself. Rectify 
the problem according to the message displayed on the control panel.

Forcing the Printer to Print Remaining Data 
(When Printing is Halted)
If the printer stops receiving data half way through a print job, the printer will wait for a pre-determined 
time, during this wait, the control panel will display Data Wait. If you wish to, you can force the printer 
to print the data that it has already received. Refer to the following steps for more information.
The default job time-out is 30 seconds. You can set the job time-out to between 5 and 300...

Cleaning the Density Sensor
When the printers density sensor is dirty, follow the steps below to clean it.
1On the printers right side, press the side of the 
power switch marked O to turn the printer off.
2Push up button A (1) and fully open the front cover 
(2).
3Grip the orange tabs at both ends of the transfer roll 
and gently lift it out of the printer.
Lift the roll carefully to prevent waste toner from 
spilling out.

4Gently wipe the density sensor window with a clean 
dry cloth or cotton swab.
Do not allow anything hard to come in contact with 
the density sensor window. Do not use excessive 
force to clean the window.
5Replace the transfer roll cartridge. Grip the orange 
U-shaped tabs as shown.
6Insert the pins at both ends of the transfer roll 
cartridge into the bearings inside the printer.
7To lock the transfer roll cartridge into the printer, 
push down on the tabs until you hear a...

Clearing Paper Jams
If a paper jam occurs, printing stops and an error message appears on the control panel informing you 
of the location of the paper jam.
To clear the paper jam, read the error message, refer to the appropriate section below, and follow the 
procedure.
Attempting to print while there is paper jammed in the printer may damage the printer. Remove 
jammed paper immediately.

■If smoke comes out of the printer when a paper jam occurs, do not open the printer covers. Turn the 
printer off, remove the power cord from the AC outlet/socket, and contact your dealer or Brother 
Customer Service for assistance.
■Remove jammed paper slowly and carefully to avoid tearing it.
Paper jams can be caused by incorrect printer installation, or using unsuitable or low-quality paper.

Paper Jams in the Multi-purpose Tray
Follow the procedure below to remove the jammed paper.
1Pull the jammed paper out of the multi-purpose tray.
2Push up button A (1) and fully open the front cover 
(2). Confirm that there are no scraps of paper 
remaining inside the printer.
3Close the front cover.

Paper Jams in the Paper Tray
If the Optional Tray Module is not installed, follow the procedure below to remove paper jammed in the 
paper tray.
If the Optional Tray Module is installed, look for the jammed paper sequentially, starting with the lowest 
tray. Follow the procedure described in Paper Jams in the 2 Tray Module on page 6-10.
1Slowly, completely remove the paper tray from the 
printer.
2Remove all the jammed and/or creased paper from 
the tray.

4Push up button A (1) and fully open the front cover 
(2). Confirm that there are no scraps of paper 
remaining inside the printer.
5Close the front cover.
6Hold the paper tray with both hands, align it with the 
opening in the printer and gently push it back in the 
printer.
7Push the paper tray completely back into the printer.
Do not use excessive force on the paper tray. Doing 
so could damage the paper tray or the inside of the 
printer.
