Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 111 Document jamsC If the document is jammed, follow the steps below. Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit C The document may get jammed if it is not inserted or fed properly, or if it is too long. Follow the steps below to clear a document jam. aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bOpen the ADF cover. cPull the jammed document out to the left. dClose the ADF cover. ePress Stop/Exit. Document is jammed inside the ADF unit C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bLift the document cover. cPull the jammed document out to the right. dClose the document cover. ePress Stop/Exit. Document is jammed at the output tray C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bPull the jammed document out to the right. cPress Stop/Exit.

Paper jamsC To clear paper jams, please follow the steps in this section. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. Paper is jammed inside the machineC aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 113 cPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. dSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper may be pulled out with the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening. CAUTION To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover. gPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine.
114 Paper is jammed at the back of the machine C aPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. cOpen the back cover. d Pull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you to open the fuser cover (1). eUsing both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. fClose the back cover. 1

Paper is jammed in the duplex tray (MFC-8860DN and MFC-8870DW only) C aPull the duplex tray completely out of the machine. bPull the jammed paper out of the machine or the duplex tray. cPut the duplex tray back in the machine. Paper is jammed inside the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly C aPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
116 cHold down the lock lever on the right and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Take out the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. dPut the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover. Routine maintenanceC CAUTION The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or cloths, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. Cleaning the outside of the machineC CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the outside surface of the machine. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel. It may crack the panel.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 117 Clean the outside of the machine as follows: C aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bWipe the outside of the machine with a soft cloth to remove dust. cRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. dWipe the inside of the paper tray with a soft cloth to remove dust. eRe-load the paper and put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.
118 Cleaning the scanner glassC aTurn off the machine’s power switch. bLift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and scanner glass (3) underneath it with isopropyl alcohol on a soft lint-free cloth. cIn the ADF unit, clean the white plastic bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) under it with isopropyl alcohol on a lint- free cloth. Cleaning the laser scanner windowC CAUTION DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to clean the laser scanner window. DO NOT touch the laser scanner window with your fingers. aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Unplug the telephone line cord first, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bOpen the front cover and take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. 1 3 2 1 2

Do not use isopropyl alcohol. dPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine. eClose the front cover. fPlug the machine’s power cord back into the electrical socket first, and then plug in the telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch. 1
120 Cleaning the corona wireC We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. aOpen the front cover and take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. bClean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times. cReturn the blue tab and snap it into the home position (b). CAUTION If you do not return the blue tab to the home position (b), your printed pages may have vertical black stripes on them. dPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. eClose the front cover. Cleaning the drum unitC aTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, and then take out the toner cartridge from the drum unit. bPut the print sample in front of the drum unit, and find the exact position of the poor print. cTurn the white gear on the drum as you check the surface of the OPC drum (1). 1 1
