For all other users, plea se dispose of this card in paper recycling. The following soft-copy documentation is available on the installation disc: • Scanner user’s guide —contains detailed installation, conf iguration, scanning, and maintenance instructions. • Nuance PaperPort user’s guide —contains detailed information using the application and managing your scanned documents. • Nuance OmniPage user’s guide —contains detailed instructions on using the software, including information on using Optical Character Recognition to create editable text files from the scanned documents. • Nuance PDF Converter user’s guide —contains detailed information on using the application to create and modify PDF files. • Kofax Virtual ReScan (VRS™) user’s guide —contains detailed feature and configuration instructions for the software, including usin g the advanced image enhancement options to improve the clarity of scanned images created from imperfect originals.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 23 The Xerox DocuMate 3640 Scanner Input tray —holds the documents in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for scanning. Paper guides —adjust to support vari ous document widths. ADF cover release —lift to open the Automati c Document Feeder (ADF). Scanner lock —locks the scanner’s scan head in place to protect it. Push the lock tab down to unlock the lock. The scanner must be unlocked to scan . Always lock the scanner before moving it. Control panel —OneTouch scanning controls. • LED Number —shows the current scan setting for the Scan button. • Function button —selects the scan setting for the OneTou ch buttons. Press to cycle through the settings. • Simplex button —press to scan sing le-sided documents. • Duplex button —press to scan double-sided documents. • Status light —shows the scanner’s status. Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 24 Output tray —holds documents after being scanned thro ugh the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). Paper stop —keeps scanned documents on the output tray. Power switch —on/off power switch. Power jack —connects the power cord to the scanner. Universal Serial Bus (USB) port —connects the scanner to the computer. ADF cable—connects the ADF to the scanner body. The ca ble provides power to the ADF and must be plugged in for it to operate.

Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 26 Unpack and Assemble the Scanner 1. Remove the scanner from its protective foam and plastic bag. 2. Remove any shipping tape from the scanner, input tray and output tray. 3. Push the locking tab down to the unlocked position. Note: The locking tab protects the scanner’s scan head by holding it securely in position. Lock the scanner when transporting it from one location to another, but remember to unlock it before scanning. The scanner will not scan when locked.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 27 4. Plug the ADF cable into the ADF po rt on the back of the scanner. Make sure the cable is plugged in securely. The ADF will not work if the cable is loose or not plugged in. 5. Slide the tray in so the pins seat into the holes on the ADF. 6. Swing the input tray up until it snaps into place. 7. When you’re finished assembling the scanner, pl ace it on a level surface on your desk. If the scanner is on an uneven surface, it may stall when scanning from the Flatbed.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 28 Connect the Scanner Power Cord 1. Plug the power supply into the power port on the scanner. Note: Only use the power supply (HEG42-240200-7L made by HiTron or DA-48M24 made by APD) included with your scanner. Connecting any other type of power supply may damage your scanner, and will void its warranty. 2. Plug the power cord into the power supply and into a wall outlet.

Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 30 Before You Begin Please make sure of the following before you begin installation: • The information in this guide may cover software not provided with the scanner you purchased. Please disregard any information about the software not applicable to your scanner. • If your computer has AntiVirus or AntiSpyware software running, you may encounter alerts or messages during installation asking you to al low the installation to proceed. Although the messages will differ based on the software your computer is running, in each case you should allow the installation to proceed if that option is available. Alternatively, you can turn off the AntiVirus or AntiSpyware software be fore installing your scanner, but if you do, make sure to turn it back on again when installation is finished. • If you already have a scanner connected to your computer, it is recommended that you remove that scanner’s driver program prior to installing your Xerox scanner. You can remove these programs from the Windows Control Panel. Please refer to the user manual provided with your other scanner hardware for instructions about re moving the driver and software for that unit. • If your computer is running Windows Vista or later, you may see the Windows User Account Control screen asking you to confirm system change s. Click the Yes button to allow the installation to proceed. • The Windows User Account Control (UAC) must be turned off prior to installing the Kofax VRS or Kofax Scan Demo software. The Kofax VRS installe r will display a message stating "User Account Control is enabled on this machine. The VRS installer will not install correctly with this setting enabled. Please disable this setting from the User Accounts dialog in the Control Panel." The Kofax Scan Demo installer will display a message stating "Cannot find IC runtime. Install IC." Turn off the Vista UAC to complete the installation of these two software applications. You can turn UAC back on after the installation has completed.
