Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 194 Safety Precautions When servicing the scanner you should take the following precautions to ensure your safety and prevent damage to the scanner. Do These • Move the scanner to an area that has adequate ro om for opening the scanner. There should be at least 18 inches of space on each side and above the scanner. Always have a least two people move the scanner, lifting the scanner up from underneath. Lifting the scanner from any other area could cause personal injury and damage the scanner. • Always place the scanner on a solid support surf ace that has adequate strength to support the weight of the scanner. • Wear an anti-static strap to pr event electrostatic discharge when touching metal components. • Always read the instructions in ea ch section carefully, the instructions are specific to the part you are installing or servicing. • Keep all scanner parts and accessories out of the reach of children. Do Not Do These • Never attempt installation of any part not described in this manual. • Never service the scanner near a radiator or any other heat source. • Never use aerosol sprays or compressed air, or attempt to lubricate parts with an oil or silicon spray. • Never service the scanner in an area where there are open liquid containers. • Never pour or spill liquid on the scanner or any of its components.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 195 Clearing Paper Jams If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document Feeder, a warning opens after a few moments. 1. Lift the ADF cover release on the top of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Fe e d e r c o ve r . 2. Remove the jammed paper and close the cover. To reduce the number of paper jams, smooth and straighten the paper before scanning, adjust the guides to the paper size, and inse rt the paper evenly into the ADF
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 196 Cleaning the Automatic Document Feeder Cleaning the inside of the scanner helps to keep your scanner operating at optimum performance. You should clean the inside of the scanner at least once a week or after 5,000 pages have been scanned. If you are getting frequent paper jams, multiple pages feeding at the same time, or you’re seeing lines in the scanned image, it is time to clean the scanner. Note: Be careful when cleaning the rollers. All of the rollers, except the free rollers, are designed to rotate in one direction only. Do NOT force the roller to rotate in the opposite direction. Forcing the roller to rotate will damage it, and cause the scanner to feed pages incorrectly. 1. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with some Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (95%). 2. Lift the ADF cover release on the top of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Fe e d e r c o ve r . 3. Wipe the feed roller from side to side. Rotate the roller to clean its entire surface. Feed roller
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 197 4. Locate the Free rollers in the underside of the AD F door. Wipe the Free rollers from side to side. Rotate the rollers downward to clean the entire surface of each roller. Free rollers
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 198 Cleaning the Scanner Glass Scanning items that have excessive amounts of dirt or dust may dirty the glass. To ensure the best quality scanned item, wipe the scanner glass with a soft clean cloth to rid the glass of dust or other debris. If there is any residue on the glass that does not remove with a soft dry cloth try dampening the cloth with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Note: If lines are appearing in scans from the ADF but not from the flatbed, make sure you have cleaned the area of the flatbed glass that the ADF scan s against. This area is at one side of the glass and has a white reference frame. This is the area of the glass where images are captured as paper is pulled through the ADF during scanning.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 199 Replacing the ADF Pad Assembly The ADF pad may wear out and is designed to be a user-replaceable part. Problems with documents feeding into th e ADF is an indication that the pad is wearing thin. See the Xerox DocuMate 3640 Parts List on page 214 for ordering information. To replace the ADF Pad assembly: 1. Lift the ADF cover release on the top of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Feeder cover. The pad is located in the middle of the ADF. 2. Squeeze the plastic clamps that hold the pad assembly in place and lift the pad up and out 3. Reverse the procedure to repl ace the new pad into its slots.
Xerox® DocuMate® 3640 User’s Guide 200 Replacing the Roller Assembly After extended use, the roller may wear out and will need to be replaced. It is a user-replaceable part and can be ordered. See the Xerox DocuMate 3640 Parts List on page 214 for ordering information. A worn roller can cause documents to feed in at an angle, multiple pages to feed at the same time, or not grab pages at all as the ro ller slips on the page. If standard maintenance of cleaning the scanner and replacing the ADF pad assemb ly does not resolve paper feed issues, it may be time to replace the roller. Please note that you cannot accurately determine if the roller has worn out if the roller has not been cleaned first. Excessive dust on the roller can make it appear worn and will be smooth to the touch. You can take the roller out of the scanner to clean and ex amine it before making the decision to replace the roller. To remove the roller assembly: 1. Lift the ADF cover release on the top of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Fe e d e r c o ve r . Note that opening the ADF cover automatically dise ngages the toothed gear on the right side of the roller so it can be removed.
