Glossary of Terms 
 
1A2 -Electro-mechanical telephone systems with hold buttons and lights.  Single line phones similar 
to those found in a home are also referred to as 1A2 type phones or 2500 sets. 
ANALOG -Voice signals and tones are transmitted as a sound (sine) wave from one end to the 
other.  No conversion to a data word takes place. 
AUTOMATED ATTENDANT - The portion of a call processing system that automatically 
answers and distributes calls. 
BLIND TRANSFER - A term used when a call is...

 
DIL -Direct Incoming Lines.  Telephone lines from the Central Office that are programmed within 
the telephone system to ring on specific extensions.  Separate lines for each DIL number are 
required. 
DISCONNECT TONE - A tone or series of  tones (Such as a Fast Busy or Reorder tone) sent by 
the telephone system to indicate a hang up condition. 
DTMF - An acronym for Dual Tone Multi-Frequency.  Touch-tones are DTMF tones. 
FLASH DURATION - The length of time the telephone line is on-hook during a hook...

 
LOG - An option on the main menu that allows data to be logged into a text file to assist technical 
support. 
MESSAGE WAITING LAMP - A light found on some telephones that flashes on and off 
indicating that the mailbox associated with that extension has a message(s) waiting in it.  
ms - Millisecond.  One-thousandth (1000th) of a second. 
OFF HOOK - Term used when telephone is in use. 
ON HOOK - Term used when the telephone is not in use, but ready to receive incoming calls.
