161Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Selecting the time, date, and numbers formats You can select the desired formats for the time, date, week start day, and numbers. The selected formats apply to all your CLIÉ applications. 1On the Formats Preferences screen, tap the arrow V next to Time and select the desired format from the drop-down list. 2Tap the arrow V next to Date and select the desired format from the drop-down list. 3Tap the arrow V next to “Week starts” and select whether you want the first day of the week to be Sunday or Monday. This setting controls the Day, Week, Month, and Agenda views in Date Book and all other aspects of your CLIÉ handheld that display a calendar. 4Tap the arrow V next to Numbers and select formats for the decimal point and thousands separator. 162Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) The Date & Time Preferences screen enables you to set the date, time, time zone, and the on/off of daylight savings for your CLIÉ handheld. After you set the local date and time of your home base, you can change the displayed time (for example, during business trips) by simply switching the time zones. 165Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Setting the General preferences The General Preferences screen enables you to set the auto shut-off inte\ rval, alarm options and sounds for your CLIÉ handheld. Setting the automatic shut-off time Your CLIÉ handheld has an automatic shut-off feature that turns off t\ he power after a period of inactivity. This feature helps conserve battery \ power in case you forget to turn off your CLIÉ handheld. If you find that y\ our CLIÉ handheld shuts itself off too early or too late, you can increase or dec\ rease the time setting for the automatic shut-off feature. By default, your CLIÉ handheld will turn off after two minutes of ina\ ctivity. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to Auto-off After and select the desired time setting for the automatic shut-off feature. You can select 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 3 minutes. If you want your CLIÉ handheld to stay ON while it is connected to the cradle (not supplied) or the plug adapter (PEG-SJ20/PEG-SJ30 only) Make sure that the check box next to “Stay on in Cradle” is select\ ed. To have it turn off automatically, clear the check box.
166Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Setting sounds Your CLIÉ handheld uses a variety of sounds. The System, Alarm, and Game Sound settings enable you to turn the sounds on or off, and to adjust the volume level. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to System Sound and select the desired sound level or Off from the drop-down list. When you turn the System Sound off, you also turn off the “chime” tones associated with the HotSync® operation. 3Tap the arrow V next to Alarm Sound and select the desired sound level from the drop-down list. 4Tap the arrow V next to Game Sound and select the desired sound level or Off from the drop-down list. The Game Sound setting works only with the games that are programmed to respond to this setting. Setting the General preferences

If you turn the Alarm Sound off and turn on the Alarm LED, you can make use of the CLIÉ handheld’s alarm feature without disturbing other people around you. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to Alarm LED and select On or Off from the drop-down list. •On: Enables the Alarm LED feature •Off: Disables the Alarm LED feature

You can turn off the Beam Receive feature to prohibit anyone from beaming information to your CLIÉ handheld, and to slightly save in battery power. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to Beam Receive and select On or Off from the drop-down list. •On: Enables the Beam Receive feature. •Off: Disables the Beam Receive feature. 169Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) The Owner Preferences screen enables you to record a name, company name, phone number, or any other information that you want to associate with your CLIÉ handheld. If you use the Security application to lock your CLIÉ handheld with a password, the information that you enter in the Owner Preferences screen appears the next time you turn on your CLIÉ handheld. 1Tap Owner from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Owner Preferences screen is displayed. 2Enter your owner information. If you enter more text than can fit on one screen, a scroll bar appears at the right side of the screen. To unlock the Owner Preferences screen If you assigned a password in the Security application, the information in the Owner Preferences screen cannot be changed. In this case, an Unlock button is displayed at the bottom of the screen. 1Tap Unlock. The Unlock Message dialog box appears. 2Enter your current password (the one you entered in the Security application) and tap OK. Entering owner information
170Chapter 5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) The ShortCuts Preferences screen enables you to define abbreviations (ShortCuts) for entering text with Graffiti® strokes. You can create a ShortCut for any words, letters, or numbers. All ShortCuts you create appear on the list in the ShortCut Preferences screen. All the ShortCuts are available in any of your CLIÉ applications and are backed up on your computer when you perform a HotSync ® operation. See “Using Graffiti® writing to enter data” on page 12 for more information on the use of ShortCuts. 1Tap ShortCut from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The ShortCut Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap New. The ShortCut Entry screen is displayed. 3On the ShortCut Name line, enter the letters you want to use to activate the ShortCut. 4Tap the ShortCut Text area and enter the text that you want to appear when you write the ShortCut characters. 5Tap OK.
