Handling Paper 3-11 Thick Paper Fan the stack of paper and align the edges before loading them in the MP tray. Some types of paper have rough edges on the back (those are created when the paper is cut). In this case, put the paper on a flat place and rub the edges once or twice with, for example, a ruler to smooth them. Feeding rough edged paper may cause paper jams. Colored Paper Colored paper should satisfy the same conditions as white bond paper, refer to Paper Specifications on page 3-2. In addition, the pigments used in the paper must be able to withstand the heat of fusing during the printing process (up to 200 °C or 392 °F). Preprinted Paper Preprinted paper should satisfy the same conditions as white bond paper, refer to Paper Specifications on page 3-2. The preprinted ink must be able to withstand the heat of fusing during the printing process, and must not be affected by silicone oil. Do not use paper with any kind of surface treatment, such as the type of paper commonly used for calendars. Recycled Paper Select recycled paper that meets the same specifications as the white bond paper except for whiteness, refer to Paper Specifications on page 3-2. Coated Paper Coated paper is created by treating the surface of the base paper with a coating that provides higher printing quality than plain paper. Coated paper is used for particularly high quality printing. The surface of high-quality or medium-quality paper is coated with special agents that improve ink coverage by making the paper surface smoother. These agents are used either to coat both sides of the paper or just one side. The coated side appears slightly glossy. IMPORTANT When printing on coated paper in very humid environments, ensure that the paper is kept dry as moisture may cause sheets to stick together when they are fed into the printer. Note If the paper jams even after you smooth it out, load the paper in the MP tray with the leading edge raised up a few millimeters as shown in the illustration. Note Before purchasing recycled paper, test a sample on the machine and check that the printing quality is satisfactory. Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
3-12Handling Paper Paper Type The printer is capable of printing under the optimum setting for the type of paper being used. Setting the paper type for the paper source from the printer’s operation panel will cause the printer to automatically select the paper source and print in the mode best suited to that type of paper. A different paper type setting can be made for each paper source including the MP tray. Not only can preset paper types be selected, but it is also possible for you to define and select customized paper types. Refer to Media Type Set. (Paper type settings) on page 4-50. Handling Paper 3-13 Loading Paper The following explains the procedure for loading paper in the cassette and the MP tray. Loading Paper into the Cassette 1Fan the media (paper/transparencies), then tap it on a level surface to avoid media jams or skewed printing. 2Pull the paper cassette out toward you until it stops. 3Adjust the paper length guide to the length of the paper. When loading A4 or smaller paper into paper cassette 1, raise the paper length guide. For B4 or larger paper, lower the paper length guide. 4Grasp the paper width adjustment knob and adjust the paper width guides to the width of the paper. Note Do not pull out more than one paper cassette at a time. Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
3-14Handling Paper 5Align the paper against the left side of the paper cassette. IMPORTANT Before loading the paper, be sure that it is not curled or folded. Paper that is curled or folded may cause paper jams. Ensure that the loaded paper is not higher than the level indicator (see illustration below). When loading the paper, make sure that the side that was closest to the package seal is facing up. The paper length and width guides must be adjusted to the paper size. Loading the paper without adjusting these guides may cause skewed feeding and paper jams. Make sure that the paper length and width guides are in contact with the paper. If there is a gap, readjust the guides. 6Insert the appropriate paper size card in the slot to indicate the size of the paper. 7Gently push the paper cassette back in. 8On the operation panel, set the type of paper (plain, recycled, etc.) that is loaded in the paper cassette. Refer to Paper Settings on page 4-46. Note Paper sizes are indicated on the paper cassettes as shown. To change between inch sizes and metric sizes (A, B sizes), follow the steps below to change the setting of the size switch. 1Grasp the paper width adjustment knob and move the paper width guides to a position other than that of the size of the paper. 2Turn size switch A 90°. 3Move size lever B up (C) or down (I). C: Metric sizes (centimeters) (A, B sizes) I: Inch sizes 4 Turn the size switch 90° to lock it. Note If the machine will not be used for a prolonged period, protect the paper from humidity by removing it from the paper cassettes and sealing it in its original packaging. Handling Paper 3-15 Loading Paper into the MP (Multi-Purpose) Tray 1Fan the media (paper/transparencies), then tap it on a level surface to avoid media jams or skewed printing. 2Open the MP tray. 3When loading paper sizes from A3 to B4 or Ledger to Legal, pull out the MP extension. 4Adjust the paper width guides to the width of the paper. Paper sizes are indicated on the MP tray. Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
3-16Handling Paper 5Insert the paper along the paper width guides into the tray until it stops. IMPORTANT Make sure that the side that was closest to the package seal is facing up. Curled paper must be straightened before use. Straighten the top edge if it is curled. Before loading paper in the MP tray, make sure no paper remains in the tray from a previous job. If a small amount of paper remains in the MP tray and you want to add more, remove the remaining paper from the tray, combine it with the new paper, fan the paper, and then load in the tray. 6Set the MP tray paper size on the printer’s operation panel. Refer to Paper Settings on page 4-46. Paper stopper When using A3 or Ledger paper, open the paper stopper. Correct Incorrect Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
