In most cases, you can tap a status icon to display the associated control panel or more information related to the item. For example, tap a battery status icon to open the Power control panel. Icon Meaning Speaker is on Speaker is off hp task switcher is running hp emergency backup is activated Backup battery is low Main battery is charging Main battery is low Main battery is very low Main battery is fully charged Connection is active Synchronization is beginning or ending Synchronization is occurring If there is not enough room to display all the notification icons that need to be displayed, the Notification icon, , will appear. Tap the icon to view all notification icons.
Chapter 3 | Overview of Windows for Pocket PC | 29 Pop-Up Menus With pop-up menus, you can quickly choose an action for an item. For example, you can use the pop-up menu in the contact list to quickly delete a contact, make a copy of a contact, or send an e-mail message to a contact. The actions in the pop-up menus vary from program to program. To access a pop-up menu, tap and hold the stylus on the name of the item that you want to perform the action on. When the menu appears, lift the stylus, and tap the action you want to perform. Or tap anywhere outside the menu to close the menu without performing an action. Tap and hold to display the pop-up menu. Lift the stylus and tap the action you want. Tap outside the menu to close it without performing an action.
30 | hp Jornada 560 series personal digital assistant User’s Guide Alerts and Notifications Your hp Jornada reminds you in a variety of ways when you have something to do. For example, if you have set up an appointment in Calendar, a task with a due date in Tasks, or an alarm in Clock, you will be notified in any of the following ways: • A message appears on the screen. • A sound, which you can specify, is played. • The notification button/LED flashes. To choose reminder types and sounds for your hp Jornada, tap Settings on the Start menu. On the Personal tab, tap Sounds & Notifications. Entering Information You have several options for entering new information: • Use the Input panel to enter typed text, either by using the soft keyboard or other input method. • Write directly on the screen. • Draw pictures on the screen. • Speak into the microphone to record a message. Entering Text Using the Input Panel Use the Input panel to enter information in any program on your hp Jornada. You can either type using the soft keyboard or write using AccessPanel, the soft keyboard, Block Recognizer, Letter Recognizer, or Transcriber. In any case, the characters appear as typed text on the screen. To show or hide the Input panel, tap the Input panel button. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button to see your choices.
Chapter 3 | Overview of Windows for Pocket PC | 31 When you use the Input panel, your hp Jornada anticipates the word you are typing or writing and displays it above the Input panel. When you tap the displayed word, it is inserted into your text at the insertion point. The more you use your hp Jornada, the more words it learns to anticipate.

To change word suggestion options, such as the number of words suggested at one time, tap Settings on the Start menu. On the Personal tab, tap Input, and then tap the Word Completion tab. AccessPanel AccessPanel helps you speed data entry by giving you “tap-and-go” access—you can instantly paste common phrases, contact information, or date and time stamps into any application. Use AccessPanel to add your signature to e-mail messages, paste salutations into letters, or add dates and times to your memos.

These buttons activate a list of your text phrases, date and time stamps, or contacts. To start AccessPanel 1. In a note or document, position the insertion point where you want to insert the text. 2. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button, and then tap AccessPanel. 3. Tap a button to display the text phrase list, date and time list, or contacts list. 4. Double-tap an entry in the AccessPanel list to insert the text into the document. ! #
34 | hp Jornada 560 series personal digital assistant User’s Guide The first time you run AccessPanel, you are prompted to install a set of sample phrases that help illustrate the use of AccessPanel. Installing the samples will provide ideas that you can use to create your own custom phrases to paste into applications. Block Recognizer With Block Recognizer, you can use the stylus to input characters using strokes that are similar to the Palm™ Graffiti® method. To type with Block Recognizer 1. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button, and then tap Block Recognizer. 2. Write a letter in the box. When you write a letter, it is converted to typed text that appears on the screen. For specific instructions on using Block Recognizer, open Block Recognizer, and then tap the question mark next to the writing area. Soft Keyboard The soft keyboard is an onscreen keyboard displayed at the bottom of the screen. To type with the soft keyboard 1. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button, and then tap Keyboard. 2. On the soft keyboard that is displayed, tap the keys with your stylus.
Chapter 3 | Overview of Windows for Pocket PC | 35 Letter Recognizer With Letter Recognizer, you can write letters using the stylus just as you would use a pen on paper. To type with Letter Recognizer 1. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button, and then tap Letter Recognizer. 2. Write a letter in the box. When you write a letter, it is converted to typed text that appears on the screen. For specific instructions on using Letter Recognizer, open Letter Recognizer and then tap the question mark next to the writing area. Transcriber With Transcriber you can write anywhere on the screen using the stylus just as you would on paper. Unlike Letter Recognizer and Block Recognizer, you can write a sentence or more of information; then, you pause and let Transcriber change the written characters to typed characters. To type with Transcriber 1. Tap the arrow next to the Input panel button, and then tap Transcriber. 2. Write anywhere on the screen. For specific instructions on using Transcriber, open Transcriber and then tap the question mark in the lower-right corner of the screen. Writing on the Screen In any program that accepts writing—such as the Notes program and the Notes tab in Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks—you can use your stylus to write directly on the screen. Write the way you do on paper. You can edit and format what you have written and convert the information to text later. To write on the screen • Tap the Pen button to switch to writing mode. This action displays lines on the screen to help you write.
36 | hp Jornada 560 series personal digital assistant User’s Guide Tap the Pen button and use your stylus like a pen. Some programs that accept writing may not have the Pen button. See the documentation for that program to find out how to switch to writing mode. If you want to edit or format writing, you must select it first. To select writing 1. Tap and hold the stylus next to the text you want to select until the insertion point appears. 2. Without lifting, drag the stylus across the text you want to select.
