    							Cleaning the Print Head Using the Product Control Panel
    You can clean the print head using the control panel on your product.
    1. Load a few sheets of plain paper in the product.
    2. Press the home button, if necessary.
    3. Press the left or right arrow buttons to select Setupand press the OKbutton.
    4. Press the up or down arrow buttons to select Maintenanceand press theOKbutton.

    5. Press the up or down arrow buttons to select Head Cleaningand press theOKbutton.

    							6. Press the start button to begin the cleaning cycle.
    Caution: Never turn off the product during a cleaning cycle or you may damage it.
    The power light flashes throughout the cleaning cycle and stays on green when the cleaning cycle
    is finished. You see this screen:
    7. Select Nozzle Check and press theOKbutton to run a nozzle check to confirm that the print head is
    clean.

    							If you don’t see any improvement after cleaning the print head up to 4 times, turn off the product and wait
    at least 6 hours. Then try cleaning the print head again. If quality still does not improve, one of the ink
    cartridges may be old or damaged and needs to be replaced.

    Cleaning the Print Head Using a Computer Utility You can clean the print head using a utility on your Windows or Mac computer.
    1. Load a few sheets of plain paper in the product.
    2. Do one of the following:•Windows: Right-click the product icon in the Windows taskbar.
    • Mac OS X 10.6/10.7/10.8: In the Apple menu or the Dock, select System Preferences. Select
    Print & Fax orPrint & Scan, select your product, and select Options & Supplies. SelectUtility
    and select Open Printer Utility.
    • Mac OS X 10.5: In the Apple menu or the Dock, select System Preferences. SelectPrint & Fax,
    select your product, and select Open Print Queue. SelectUtility.
    3. Select Head Cleaning.
    You see a window like this:

    							4. Click
    Startto begin the cleaning cycle.
    The power light flashes throughout the cleaning cycle and stays on when the cleaning cycle is
    finished.
    Caution: Never turn off the product during a cleaning cycle or you may damage it.
    5. When the power light stops flashing and remains on, you can check to see if the nozzles are clean; click Print Nozzle Check Pattern and clickPrint.
    6. Check the printed pattern to see if there are gaps in the lines. Print head is clean

    • If there are no gaps, click
    Finish.
    • If there are gaps or the pattern is faint, click Cleanto clean the print head again.

    5. Check the printed pattern and follow the instructions on the screen to choose the number representing the best printed pattern for each set.
    • After choosing each pattern number, click Next.
    • If no patterns are aligned in one or more of the sets, choose the closest one in each set and click Realignment. Then print another alignment sheet and check it.
    Note: ClickSkip(where available) if you want to skip a particular alignment sheet.
    6. When you are done, click Finish.

    							Cleaning the Paper Path
    If you see ink on the back of a printout, you can clean the paper path to remove any excess ink.
    1. Load a few sheets of plain paper in the product.
    2. Use the product control panel to make a copy, but without placing a document on the scanner glass.
    3. Check the back of the ejected paper to see if it is clean.
    4. Repeat as necessary until the paper comes out clean.

    Cleaning Your Product To keep your product working at its best, you should clean it several times a year.
    Close the output tray and paper support when you are not using the product to protect it from dust.
    Caution:Do not use a hard brush, alcohol, or paint thinner to clean the product or you may damage it.
    Do not use oil or other lubricants inside the product or let water get inside it.
    1. Turn off the product.
    2. Unplug the power cable.
    3. Disconnect any connected cables.
    4. Remove all the paper.
    5. Clean the scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber is recommended), moistened with a little glass cleaner.
    Caution: Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the glass and do not press the glass surface with
    any force.
    6. Clean the outer case and control panel with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or chemical cleansers.
