83 S Selecting the AF Point N With lenses whose maximum aperture is larger than f/5.6 With the center AF point, cross-type AF (sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines) is possible. The remaining eight AF points are horizontal-line sensitive or vertical-line sensitive. With lenses whose maximum aperture is larger than f/2.8 With the center AF point, high-precis ion, cross-type AF sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines is possible. The center AF point’s sensitivity to vertical and horizontal lines is a bout twice as sensitive as the other AF points. The remaining eight AF po ints are horizontal-line sensitive or vertical-line sensitive. * Except with the EF28-80mm f/2.8-4L USM and EF50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lenses. Lens’ Maximum Aperture and AF Sensitivity The Assist AF points used in the AI Servo AF mode are within the spot metering circle and not displayed like normal AF po ints. They function as follows: : Vertical-line sensitiv e with f/2.8 and f/5.6 lenses, as with the center AF point. : Horizontal-line sensit ive with f/5.6 lenses. COPY
84 Autofocus can fail to achieve focus (the focus confirmation light blinks) with certain subjects such as the following: Subjects difficult to focus Low-contrast subjects (Example: Blue sky, solid-color walls, etc.) Subjects in low light Extremely backlit or reflective subjects (Example: Car with a reflective body, etc.) Near and far subjects covered by an AF point (Example: Animal in a cage, etc.) Repetitive patterns (Example: Skyscraper windows, computer keyboards, etc.) In such cases, do one of the following: (1) With One-Shot AF, focus an object at the same distance as the subject and lock the focus before recomposing (p.50). (2) Set the lens focus mode switch to < MF> and focus manually. 1Set the lens focus mode switch to . 2Focus the subject. 88 The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture to suit the subject’s brightness. This is called Program AE. *< d> stands for Program.* AE stands for Auto Exposure. 1Set the Mode Dial to < d>. 2Focus the subject. Look through the viewfinder and aim the selected AF point over the subject. Then press the shutter button halfway. X The AF point which achieves focus flashes in red, and the focus confirmation light < o> in the viewfinder’s bottom right lights (with One Shot AF + automatic AF point selection). X The shutter speed and aperture will be set automatically and displayed in the viewfinder and on the LCD panel. 3Check the shutter speed and aperture display. A correct exposure will be obtained as long as the shutter speed and aperture display do not blink. 4Take the picture. Compose the shot and press the shutter button completely. d: Program AE COPY
89 d: Program AE If the “ 30” shutter speed and the maximum aperture blink, it indica tes underexposure. Increase the ISO speed or use flash. If the “ 8000” shutter speed and the minimum aperture blink, it indicates overexposure. Lower the ISO speed or use an ND filter (sold separately) to reduce the am ount of light entering the lens. Differences Between < d> and < 1> (Full Auto)With < 1>, many functions such the AF mode, drive mode, and metering mode are set automaticall y to prevent spoiled shots. The functions you can set are limited. With < d>, only the shutter spee d and aperture are set automatically. You can f reely set the AF mode, drive mode, and other functions. About Program Shift In the Program AE mode , you can freely change the shutter speed and aperture combination (Pro gram) set by the camera while maintaining the same exposure. This is called Program shift. To do this, press the shutter button down halfway, then turn the < 6> dial until the desired shutter spee d or aperture value is displayed. Program shift is canceled automati cally after the picture is taken. Program shift cannot be used with flash. COPY
90 In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture to obtain the correct exposure matching the brightness of the subject. This is called shutter-priority AE. A faster \ shutter speed can freeze the action or moving subject. Or a slower shutter speed can create a blurred effect, giving the impression of motion. * < s > stands for Time value. 1Set the Mode Dial to < s>. 2Set the desired shutter speed. While looking at the LCD panel, turn the < 6> dial. 3Focus the subject. Press the shutter button halfway. X The aperture is set automatically. 4Check the viewfinder display and shoot.
