31 1Remove the caps. Remove the rear lens cap and the body cap by turning them as shown by the arrow. 2Attach the lens. Align the red dots on the lens and camera and turn the lens as shown by the arrow until it snaps in place. 3On the lens, set the focus mode switch to (autofocus). If it is set to < MF> (manual focus), autofocus will not operate. 4Remove the front lens cap. Attaching and Detaching a Lens Attaching a Lens Do not look at the sun directly through any lens. Doing so may cause loss of vision. The camera cannot be used with EF-S lenses. Minimizing Dust When changing lenses, do it in a place with minimal dust. When storing the camera without a lens attached, be sure to attach the body cap to the camera. Remove dust on the body cap before attaching it. COPY
32 Attaching and Detaching a Lens To zoom, turn the zoom ring on the lens with your fingers. If you want to zoom, do it before focusing. Turning the zoom ring after achieving focus may throw off the focus slightly. While pressing the lens release button, turn the lens as shown by the arrow. Turn the lens until it stops, then detach it. Attach the dust cap to the detached lens. When the dedicated EW-83H hood is attached to the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, it can block unwanted lig ht and also protect the front of the lens from rain, snow, dust, etc. W hen storing the lens in a bag, etc., you can also attach the hood in reverse. 1Align the hood’s red mark with the red index on the lens edge. 2Turn the hood to the position shown in the illustration. Turn the hood clockwise to attach it securely. About Zooming Detaching the Lens Attaching a Hood If the hood is not properly attached, the image pe riphery might look dark. When attaching or detaching the hood, grasp the hood toward the bottom to turn it. If you hold the front edge of the hood, it might get bent out of shape and become unable to turn. COPY
33 When you use the IS lens’ built-in Image Stabilizer, camera shake is corrected to obtain a less blurred shot. The procedure explained here is based on the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens as an example. * IS stands for Image Stabilizer. 1Set the IS switch to < 1>. Set the camera’s power switch to . 2Press the shutter button halfway. XThe Image Stabilizer will operate. 3Take the picture. When the picture looks steady in the viewfinder, press the shutter button completely to take the picture. About the Lens Image Stabilizer The Image Stabilizer is not ef fective for moving subjects. The Image Stabilizer may no t be effective for excessive shaking such as on a rocking boat. If you use the EF24- 105mm f/4L IS USM lens for panned shots, correction of camera shake might not be so effective. The Image Stabilizer can operate wi th the focus mode switch set to either < AF> or < MF>. If the camera is mounted on a trip od, you can save battery power by switching the IS switch to < 2>. The Image Stabilizer is effective ev en when the camera is mounted on a monopod. COPY
34 Turn the dioptric adjustment knob. Turn the knob left or right so that the nine AF points in the viewfinder look sharp. To obtain sharp images, hold the ca mera still to minimize camera shake. 1. Wrap your right hand around the camera grip firmly. 2. Hold the lens bottom with your left hand. 3. Press the shutter button lightly with your right hand’s index finger. 4. Press your arms and elbows lightly against the front of your body. 5. Press the camera against your fa ce and look through the viewfinder. 6. To maintain a stable stance, pl ace one foot in front of the other. Basic Operation Adjusting the Viewfinder Clarity Holding the Camera If the camera’s dioptric adjustment still cannot provide a sharp viewfinder image, using Dioptric Ad justment Lens E (10 type s, sold separately) is recommended. 35 Basic Operation The shutter button has two steps. You can press the shutter button halfway. Then you can further press the shutter button completely. Pressing halfway This activates autofocusing and automatic exposure metering that sets the shutter speed and aperture. The exposure setting (shutter speed and aperture) is displayed on the LCD panel and in the viewfinder (0). Pressing completely This releases the shutter and takes the picture. Preventing Camera Shake Camera movement during the moment of exposure is called camera shake. Camera shake can cause blur red pictures. To prevent camera shake, note the following: • Hold and steady the camera as shown on the previous page. • Press the shutter button halfway to autofocus, then press the shutter button completely. Shutter Button In the d/s /f /a /F modes, pressing the < p> button halfway will execute the same operation. If you press the shutter bu tton completely without pressing it halfway first or if you press the shutter button ha lfway and then press it completely immediately, the camera will take a moment before it takes the picture. Even during the menu display, image playback, and image recording, you can instantly go back to shoo ting-ready by pressing the shutter button halfway. COPY
36 Basic Operation (1)After pressing a button, turn the dial. When you press a button, its function remains selected for 6 seconds ( 9). During this time, you can turn the < 6> dial to set the desired setting. When the function turns off or if you press the shutter button halfway, the camera will be ready to shoot. Use this dial to select or set the metering mode, AF mode, ISO speed, AF point, etc. (2)Tu r n t h e < 6> dial only. While looking at the viewfinder or LCD panel, turn the < 6> dial to set the desired setting. Use this dial to set the shutter speed, aperture, etc. The < 9> consists of a key with eight directions and a button at the center. Use it to select the AF point, correct the white balance, move the AF point or magnifying frame during Live View shooting, scroll the playback image during magnified view, operate the Quick Control screen, etc. You can also use it to select or set menu options (except [ 3 Erase images ] and [5 Format]). 6 Using the Main Dial for Selecting 9 Operating the Multi-controller COPY

38 The shooting settings are displayed on the LCD monitor where you can quickly select and set the functions. This is called the Quick Control screen. 1Display the Quick Control screen. Press < 9> straight down. X The Quick Control screen will appear. () 2Set the desired setting. Use < 9> to select a function. In the < 1> (Full Auto) mode, you can select certain drive modes (p.85) and the image-recording quality (p.54). X A brief description of the selected function is displayed on the screen’s bottom. Turn the < 5> or < 6> dial to change the setting. 3Take the picture. Press the shutter button completely to take the picture. 39 9 Using the Quick Control Screen On the Quick Control screen, select the function and press < 0>. The respective setting screen will then appear (except for the shutter speed and aperture). Turn the < 5> or < 6> dial to change the setting. Press < 0> to return to the Quick Control screen.
