161 L Erasing Images 2Select [Select and erase images]. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ Select and erase images ], then press < 0 >. X An image will appear. Press the < I> button to display the three-image view. To return to the single-image display, press the < u> button. 3Select the image to be erased. Turn the < 5> dial to select the image to be erased, then press < 0 >. X The < X> icon will be displayed on the upper left. To erase another image, repeat step 3. 4Erase the image. Press the < L> button. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ OK], then press < 0>. X The selected image will be erased. You can erase all the images in a fo lder or card at one time. When the [3 Erase images ] menu is set to [All images in folder ] or [All images on card ], all the images in the fold er or card will be erased. 3 Erasing All Images in a Folder or Card COPY
162 The LCD monitor’s brightness is adjusted automatically for optimum viewing. You can set the automatic adjustment’s brightness level (brighter or darker) or ad just the brightness manually. 1Select [LCD brightness]. Under the [ 6] tab, select [LCD brightness ], then press < 0>. 2Select [Auto] or [Manual]. Turn the < 6> dial to make the selection. 3 Adjust the brightness. While referring to the gray chart, turn the < 5> dial, then press < 0>. You can adjust [ Auto] to one of three levels, and [ Manual] to one of seven levels. 163 Changing Image Playback Settings You can set how long the image is displayed on the LCD monitor immediately after capture. To keep the image displayed, set [ Hold]. To not have the image displayed, set [Off ]. 1Select [Review time]. Under the [ 1] tab, select [ Review time ], then press < 0>. 2Set the desired time. Turn the < 5> dial to select the setting, then press < 0>. 3 Setting the Image Review Time If [Hold ] is set, the image will be displa yed until the auto power off time elapses. COPY
164 Changing Image Playback Settings Vertical images are rotated automatically so they are displayed vertically on the camera’s LCD monitor and personal computer instead of horizontally. The setting of this feature can be changed. 1Select [Auto rotate]. Under the [ 5] tab, select [Auto rotate ], then press < 0>. 2Set the auto rotation. Turn the < 5> dial to select the setting, then press < 0>. OnzD The vertical image is automatically rotated on both the camera’s LCD monitor and on the personal computer. OnD The vertical image is automatically rotated only on the personal computer. Off The vertical image is not rotated. 3 Auto Rotation of Vertical Images Auto rotation will not work with vertical images captured while auto rotation was [ Off]. They will not rotate even if you later switch it to [On] for playback. Immediately after image capture, the vertical image will not be automatically rotated for the image review. If the vertical image is taken while the camera is pointed up or down, the image might not rotate automatically for playback. If the vertical image is not auto matically rotated on the personal computer screen, it means the software you are using is unable to rotate the image. Using the provided software is recommended. 165 Sensor Cleaning The camera has a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit attached to the image sensor’s front layer (low-pass filter) to shake off dust automatically. The Dust Delete Data can also be appended to the image so that the dust spot s remaining can be erased automatically by Digital Photo Professional (provided software). About smear adhering to the front of the sensorBesides dust entering the camera from outside, in rare cases lubricant from the camera’s internal parts may adhere to the front of the sensor. In case visible spots still remain after the automatic sensor cleaning, having the sensor cleaned by a Ca non Service Center is recommended. Even while the Self Cleaning Sens or Unit is operating, you can press the shutter button halfway to interrupt the cleaning and start shooting immediately. COPY
166 Whenever you set the power switch to or < 2>, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit operates to aut omatically shake off the dust on the front of the sensor. Normally , you need not be aware of this operation. However, you can execute the sensor cleaning at anytime as well as disable it. 1Select [Sensor cleaning]. Under the [ 6] tab, select [Sensor cleaning], then press < 0>. 2Select [Clean nowf ]. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ Clean now f], then press < 0>. Select [OK ], then press < 0>. X The screen will indicate that the sensor is being cleaned. Although there will be a shutter sound, a picture is not taken. In step 2, select [ Auto cleaningf] and set it to [ Disable]. X The sensor cleaning will no lon ger be executed when you set the power switch to < 1/J> or < 2>. f Automatic Sensor Cleaning Cleaning the Sensor Now Disabling Automatic Sensor Cleaning For best results, do the sensor cleaning while the camera bottom is placed on a table or other flat surface. Even if you repeat the sensor cleaning, the resu lt will not improve that much. Right after the sensor cleaning is finished, the [Clean nowf] option will remain disabled temporarily. COPY
167 Normally, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit will eliminate most of the dust that might be visible on captured im ages. However, in case visible dust still remains, you can append the Dust Delete Data to the image to later erase the dust spots. The Dust Delete Data is used by Digital Photo Professional (provided software) to erase the dust spots automatically. Get a solid-white object (paper, etc.). Set the lens focal length to 50mm or longer. Set the lens focus mode switch to < MF> and set the focus to infinity ( ∞). If the lens has no distance scale, look at the front of the lens and turn the focusing ring clockwise all the way. 1Select [Dust Delete Data]. Under the [ 2] tab, select [ Dust Delete Data ], then press < 0>. 2Select [OK]. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ OK], then press < 0>. After the automatic sensor cleaning ends, a message will appear. Although there will be a shutter sound, a picture is not taken. 3 Appending Dust Delete Data N Preparation Obtain the Dust Delete Data COPY
168 3 Appending Dust Delete Data N 3Photograph a solid-white object. At a distance of 20 cm - 30 cm / 0.7 ft. - 1.0 ft., fill the viewfinder with a patternless, solid-white object and take a picture. X The picture will be taken in the aperture- priority AE mode with an aperture of f/22. Since the image will not be saved, the data can still be obta ined even if there is no card in the camera. X When the picture is taken, the camera will start obtaining the Dust Delete Data. When the Dust Delete Data is obtained, a message will appear. Select [OK ], and the menu will reappear. If the data was not obtained successfully, a message to that effect will appear. Follow the “Preparation” procedure on the preceding page, then select [ OK]. Take the picture again. After the Dust Delete Data is obt ained, it is appended to all the JPEG and RAW images captured thereafter. Before an important shoot, you should update the Dust Delete Data by obtaining it again. To erase dust spots automatically with the bundled software, see the Software Instruction Manual in the CD-ROM. The Dust Delete Data appended to the image is so small that it hardly affects the image file size. About the Dust Delete Data Be sure to use a solid-white object such as a new sheet of white paper. If the paper has any pattern or design, it ma y be recognized as dust data and affect the accuracy of the du st deletion with the software. COPY
169 Dust which could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with a blower, etc. The surface of the image sensor is extremely delicate. If the sensor needs to be cleaned directly, having it done by a Canon Service Center is recommended. Before cleaning the sensor, det ach the lens from the camera. 1Select [Sensor cleaning]. Under the [ 6] tab, select [Sensor cleaning], then press < 0>. 2Select [Clean manually]. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ Clean manually ], then press < 0>. 3Select [OK]. Turn the < 5> dial to select [ OK], then press < 0>. X In a moment, the mirror will lockup and the shutter will open. “CLn ” will blink on the LCD panel. 4End the cleaning. Set the power switch to < 2>. 3 Manual Sensor Cleaning N As power source, us ing the AC Adapter Kit ACK- E6 (sold separately) is recommended. If you use the battery, make sure it is fully recharged. If a battery grip with size-AA/LR6 batteries is attached, manual sensor cleani ng will not be possible. COPY
170 3 Manual Sensor Cleaning N While cleaning the sensor, never do any of the following. Doing any of the following will cut off the power and close the shutter. The shutter curtains and image sensor might get damaged. • Setting the power switch to < 2>. • Opening the battery compartment cover. • Opening the card slot cover. The surface of the image sensor is extremely delicate. Clean the sensor with care. Use a plain blower without any brus h attached. A brush can scratch the sensor. Do not insert the blower tip inside th e camera beyond the lens mount. If the power is turned off, the shutter will close and the shutter curtains or reflex mirror might get damaged. Never use canned air or gas to clea n the sensor. The blowing force can damage the sensor or the spray gas can freeze on the sensor. If smear that cannot be removed wi th a blower remains, having the sensor cleaned by a Canon Se rvice Center is recommended. COPY
