MAKING COPIES 11 - 6 Changing the Default Copy Settings Press Menu/Set, 3 to change default settings for Copy mode. These settings will remain until you change them again by pressing Menu/Set. Adjust the Contrast and Quality settings. By pressing a number, you can adjust copy settings as shown in the following chart. Press to scroll through the options for each setting. Press Menu/Set to save your selection. Press Stop/Exit—OR—Press to select the next setting you want to change. Press Menu/Set, and 3. Copy Mode (Type of Original) You can select the Copy resolution for your type of original. The default setting is AUTO, which is used for originals that contain both text and photographs. TEXT is used for originals containing only text. When programming emergency numbers and making test calls to emergency numbers: Remain on the line and briefly explain to the dispatcher the reason for the call before hanging up. An FCC compliant telephone cord with a modular plug is provided with this equipment. This equipment is designed to be connected to the telephone line or premises wiring using a compatible modular jack that is Part 68 compliant. See the Installation section of this manual for details. The REN is useful to determine the quantity of devices you may connect to your telephone line and still have those devices ring when your telephone number is called. In most, but not all areas, the sum of the RENs of all devices connected to one line should not exceed five (5). To be certain of the number of devices you may connect to your line, as determined by the REN, you should contact your local telephone company to determine the maximum REN for your calling area. If your Brother machine damages the telephone line, the telephone company may discontinue your service temporarily. If possible, they will notify you in advance. But if advanced notice is not practical, you will be notified as soon as possible. You will be informed of your right to file a complaint with the FCC. Your telephone company may make changes to its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that could affect the proper functioning of your equipment. If they do, you will be notified in advance to give you an opportunity to maintain uninterrupted telephone service.

The telephone company may ask that you disconnect this equipment from the line until the problem has been corrected or until you are sure that the equipment is not malfunctioning. If you are not able to solve a problem with your FAX/MFC, contact Brother Customer Service. (See Brother Numbers, page i.) 12 - 5 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Important Safety Instructions 1Read all of these instructions. 2Save them for later reference. 3Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. 4Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. 5Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the product. 6Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation; to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heater. TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 13 - 1 13 13Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance Troubleshooting Error Messages You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your FAX/MFC or telephone line. If this happens, your FAX/MFC often identifies the problem and displays an error message. The list below explains the most common error messages. You can correct most problems yourself. Calls must be made from within that country. ERROR MESSAGECAUSEACTION CHANGE DRUM SOONThe drum unit is near the end of its life.Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one. CHECK PAPER The FAX/MFC is out of paper or paper is not properly loaded in the multi-purpose sheet feeder.Refill the paper or remove the paper and load it again and then press Fax Start. CHECK PAPER SIZEYour Paper Size setting may not be set correctly for the paper you are using (see pages 4-1). Change either paper in multipurpose sheet feeder or change paper size setting, and then press Fax Start. COMM. ERRORA poor quality phone line caused communications error.Try the call again. CONNECTION FAILYou tried to poll a fax machine that is not in Polled Waiting mode.Verify the other party’s polling setup.
13 - 2 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ERROR MESSAGECAUSEACTION COOLING DOWN WAIT FOR A WHILE The temperature of the drum unit or toner cartridge is too hot. The FAX/MFC will pause its current print job and go into cooling down mode. During the cooling down mode, you will hear the cooling fan running while the display on the FAX/MFC shows COOLING DOWN and WAIT FOR A WHILE. You must wait and allow the FAX/MFC to resume printing when it is ready. COVER OPEN PLS CLOSE COVERThe top cover was not completely closed.Open, then close the top cover. DISCONNECTEDThe other party or other party’s FAX/MFC terminated the call.Try to fax or receive again or call the other party to see what happened. CHECK DOCUMENTDocuments were not inserted or fed properly or document was too long.Do not pull paper out until you see page 13-5.
