Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 117 DR Mode in UseThe machine is set to Distinctive Ring mode. You can not change the Receive Mode from Manual to another mode.Set Distinctive Ring to Off. See Turning off Distinctive Ring on page 48. Drum Near EndThe drum unit is near the end of its life.Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem; then replace the drum unit with a new one. See Replacing the drum unit (DR-520) on page 135. The drum counter was not reset when a new drum was installed.1. Open the front cover, and then press Clear/Back. 2. Press 1 to reset. Duplex DisabledThe duplex tray is not installed properly.Remove the duplex tray and install it again. Dust on DrumThe primary corona wire on the drum unit needs to be cleaned.Clean the primary corona wire on the drum unit. (See Cleaning the corona wire on page 130.) Fuser ErrorThe temperature of fuser unit does not rise at a specified temperature within specified time.Turn the power switch off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it on again. Leave the machine for 15 minutes with the power on. (The machine can be turned off for up to 4 days without losing faxes stored in the memory. See Checking if the machine has faxes in its memory on page 120.) The fuser unit is too hot. (See Replacing the toner cartridge (TN-550/TN-580) on page 132.) Toner LowIf the LCD shows Toner Low, you can still print; however, the machine is telling you that the toner cartridge is near the end of its life and the toner will soon run out.Order a new toner cartridge now. Too Many TraysMore than one optional tray is installed.The maximum number of optional trays is one. Remove any additional trays. Unable to Init. 120 Checking if the machine has faxes in its memoryC If the LCD shows an error message then you can check to see if there are faxes in the machine’s memory. aPress Menu, 9, 0, 1. bDo one of the following: „If the LCD shows No Data, there are no faxes left in the machine’s memory. „If the LCD shows Dial & Start, there are faxes in the machine’s memory. • You can send the faxes to another fax machine. See Sending faxes to another fax machine on page 120. • You can send the faxes from the machine’s memory to your PC. See Sending faxes to your PC on page 120. Note You can send the Fax Journal report to another fax machine by pressing Menu,9,0,2in a. Sending faxes to another fax machineC If you have not set up your Station ID, you cannot enter fax transfer mode. aFollow a and b in Checking if the machine has faxes in its memory on page 120. bEnter the fax number to which faxes will be sent. cPress Start. Sending faxes to your PCC You can move the faxes from your machine’s memory to your PC. aPress Stop/Exit. bMake sure that you have installed MFL-Pro Suite on your PC, and then turn on PC Fax Receiving on the PC. (For details about PC Fax Receive, see Using Brother PC-FAX software (For Windows ®) in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) cMake sure that you have set PC Fax Receive on the machine. (See PC Fax Receive on page 65.) During setup the LCD will ask if you want to send the faxes to your PC. dDo one of the following: „To send all faxes to your PC, press 1. „To exit and leave the faxes in the memory, press 2. Note If there is an error message on the machine’s LCD after the faxes have been sent, disconnect the machine from the power source for several minutes, and then reconnect it.

Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit C The document may get jammed if it is not inserted or fed properly, or if it is too long. Follow the steps below to clear a document jam. aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bOpen the ADF cover. cPull the jammed document out to the left. dClose the ADF cover. ePress Stop/Exit. Document is jammed under the document cover C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bLift the document cover. cPull the jammed document out to the right. dClose the document cover. ePress Stop/Exit.

Paper jamsC To clear paper jams, please follow the steps in this section. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. Paper is jammed inside the machineC aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 123 cPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. dSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper may be pulled out with the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening. CAUTION To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover. gPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

Paper is jammed in the duplex tray (MFC-8660DN, MFC-8670DN, MFC-8860DN and MFC-8870DW only) C aPull the duplex tray completely out of the machine. bPull the jammed paper out of the machine or the duplex tray. cPut the duplex tray back in the machine. Paper is jammed inside the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly C aPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
126 cHold down the lock lever on the right and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Take out the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. dPut the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover. Routine maintenanceC CAUTION The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. Cleaning the outside of the machineC CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the outside surface of the machine. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel. It may crack the panel.
