131Utilities Setting passwords Using a supervisor password A supervisor password prevents other users from changing hardware configuration options. Setting a supervisor password If you choose to set a supervisor or user password, Toshiba strongly recommends that you save your password in a location where you can later access it should you not remember it. Toshiba is not responsible for any losses that may occur to you, your organization or others as a result of the inability to access your computer. To set a supervisor password: 1 Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then TOSHIBA Assist . The TOSHIBA Assist window appears. 2 On the left side, click the Secure tab. 3 Click the Supervisor Password icon. The Supervisor Password tab of the TOSHIBA Password Utility window appears. (Sample Image) Supervisor Password tab 4 Click Registered . 5 Enter your password, and then enter it again to verify.

The supervisor password utility dialog box appears. 7 Select Able to run HWSetup or Unable to run HWSetup and then Click OK. 8 Restart the system to complete the process. Deleting a supervisor password To delete a supervisor password: 1Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then TOSHIBA Assist . The TOSHIBA Assist window appears. 2 On the left side, click the Secure tab. 3 Click the Supervisor Password icon. The Supervisor Password tab of the TOSHIBA Password Utility window appears. 4 Click Not Registered . A pop-up screen appears asking for a password. 5 Enter the password, then click OK. 6 Click OK to exit. 7 Restart the system to complete the process. Using a user password A user password provides power-on password protection. Setting a user password If you choose to set a supervisor or user password, Toshiba strongly recommends that you save your password in a location where you can later access it should you not remember it. 133Utilities Setting passwords To register a password for the power-on password functions: 1Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then TOSHIBA Password Utility . The TOSHIBA Password Utility window appears. Deleting a user password To cancel the power-on password function: 1 Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then TOSHIBA Password Utility . The TOSHIBA Password Utility window appears. 2 Click Not Registered . 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the user password.
134Utilities TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Tool Utility TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Tool Utility This utility can help diagnose problems with devices in your computer. Refer to the online Help documentation within the application for additional help. The TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Tool utility may show tests for features you do not have. This is normal and does not indicate a problem. To use the TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Tool utility: 1 Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then PC Diagnostic Tool , or click the PC Diagnostic Tool icon in the Protect & Fix tab of TOSHIBA Assist . The TOSHIBA PC Diagnostic Tool window appears. 2 Click the Diagnostic Tool tab. 135Utilities Mouse Utility Mouse Utility The Mouse utility allows you to change your pointing device or mouse settings. To access the Mouse utility: 1Click Start, Control Panel , and then Mouse under Hardware and Sound , or click the Mouse icon in the Optimize tab of TOSHIBA Assist . The Mouse Properties screen appears. 136Utilities TOSHIBA Hardware Setup TOSHIBA Hardware Setup TOSHIBA Hardware Setup is the Toshiba configuration management tool available through the Windows® operating system. To access it: ❖ Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then HWSetup , or click the TOSHIBA Hardware Setup icon in the Optimize tab of TOSHIBA Assist . The TOSHIBA Hardware Setup screen appears. (Sample Image) TOSHIBA Hardware Setup screen – General tab options The TOSHIBA Hardware Setup screen may have the following tabs: ❖ Boot Priority —Allows you to change the sequence in which your computer searches the dr ives for the operating system You can also manually choose the Boot Priority by pressing the power button to power on the computer, then quickly pressing the F12 key. Select the boot device by pressing the arrow keys, then pressing the Enter key. Since the system is a quick-booting system, you must press the keys immediately after pressing the power button. ❖ Button Setting —Lets you set the resu me speed for Sleep mode. If you want to use the fast resume option, be sure to connect the AC adaptor to the computer. NOTE
137Utilities TOSHIBA Hardware Setup ❖CPU —Allows you to enable or disable CPU frequency switching modes Dynamically Switchable —This mode is the default setting for your computer, and automatica lly changes the processing frequency and decreases voltage depending on the power source: ❖ AC Pow e r —If your computer is connected to the AC adaptor, the CPU frequency mode is set to high for faster processing. ❖ Battery Power —If your computer is running on battery power, the CPU frequency mode is set to low for slower processing. Switching the CPU to low allows you to conserve power and extend the operating time of your battery. Always Low —Sets the CPU speed to low when using either the battery or the AC adaptor ❖ Display —Allows you to change various default settings for the built-in display When the computer restarts, it remembers the last configuration. If data does not appear on the display you are using after starting in Sleep Mode, press Fn + F5. For more information, see “Directing the display output when you turn on the computer” on page 58 . ❖ General —Allows you to view the current BIOS version or change certain settings back to their default values ❖ Keyboard —Allows you to configure an external keyboard to emulate the Fn function key and access the wake-on keyboard function ❖ LAN —Allows you to set networking functions ❖ LED —Turns the panel LED lights on and off (available on certain models) ❖ Password —Allows you to set a user password ❖ USB —Allows you to enable or disable USB Legacy Emulation NOTE
138Utilities TOSHIBA Zooming Utility By changing any of the options that appear in the dialog boxes and clicking Apply, you can reconfigure that function. Any options that you change will become default settings when you restart your system. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility This utility allows you to select which applications will work with the zoom in/out hot keys (see “Zoom (Display resolution)” on page 191 ). You may select all applications or any subset of the following: ❖ Microsoft ® Internet Explorer® ❖Microsoft® Office ❖ Windows Media ® Player ❖ Adobe ® Acrobat® Reader® ❖Icons on the desktop To access the TOSHIBA Zooming Utility: 1 Click Start, All Programs , To s h i b a , Utilities , and then TOSHIBA Zooming Utility . 139Utilities TOSHIBA Button Support The zoom in and zoom out hot keys will now work with the applications you selected. To zoom in, hold down the Fn key and press 2; to zoom out, hold down the Fn key and press 1. For more information about how to use the TOSHIBA Zooming Utility, right-click the icon in the Notification Area and then click Help. TOSHIBA Button Support (Available on certain models) TOSHIBA Button Support allows you to customize the Mute and Media buttons. These buttons ar e located on the system control panel directly above the keyboard. To access TOSHIBA Button Support: 1 Click the TOSHIBA Button Support icon in the Optimize tab of TOSHIBA Assist . The TOSHIBA Button Support window appears. 140Utilities CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer This utility can slow the speed of your optical drive to make it run more quietly. You can use this utility to make listening to music CDs more enjoyable. When you change the optical drive to “Silence” mode, the setting is only valid for the current Windows® session. If you shut down, restart, log off, or resume from Hibernation, the setting will revert back to Normal speed. The setting can also be changed by CD burning software or other applications that can set the drive speed. (Sample Image) CD/DVD Dri ve Acoustic Silencer screen To access the utility: 1 Click the CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer icon in the Optimize tab of TOSHIBA Assist . The CD/DVD Drive Acoustic S ilencer screen appears. 2 Click Silence Mode to make the drive run more slowly and quietly for listening to music or audio files on a CD. 3 Click Normal Mode to run the drive at normal speed for transferring data.
