21 FS 300, FS 350, FS 400, FS 450, FS 480English / USA Some machine versions are equipped with a throttle cable adjuster in the control handle. A properly adjusted throttle cable is the precondition for correct operation in the full throttle, starting throttle and idle positions. Adjust the throttle cable only after the unit is fully assembled – the control handle must be in the normal operating position. :Use a suitable tool to push the slide to the bottom of the slot (see illustration).:Press down the trigger interlock (1) and squeeze the throttle trigger (2) (full throttle) – this sets the throttle cable correctly. Adjusting Nylon LineNote: A detailed description is contained in the instruction sheet supplied with the mowing head. SuperCut mowing head Fresh line is advanced automatically during mowing work and trimmed to the correct length by the blade on the deflector. Line feed operates only if both lines are still at least 2.4 in (6 cm) long. AutoCut mowing head Hold unit with engine running (mowing head must rotate) above the lawn. :Tap the mowing head on the ground – fresh line is advanced and the blade on the deflector trims surplus line to the correct length. Line feed operates only if both lines are still at least 1 in (2.5 cm) long.TrimCut mowing head Shut off the engine and move the slide control to 0. Hold mowing head housing firmly and :Pull spool up – rotate it about 1/6 turn counterclockwise and allow it to spring back. :Pull ends of lines outward. Repeat the above procedure as necessary until both lines are 5.5 in (14 cm) long. Rotating the spool from one stop to the next advances about 1.6 in (4 cm) of fresh line. 4 6 256BA010 KN

26 English / USA FS 300, FS 350, FS 400, FS 450, FS 480 This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline and the STIHL two- stroke engine oil at a mix ratio of 50:1. Your engine requires a mixture of high- quality gasoline and quality two-stroke air cooled engine oil. Use mid-grade unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 (R+M/2). If the octane rating of the mid-grade gasoline in your area is lower, use premium unleaded fuel. Fuel with a lower octane rating may increase engine temperatures. This, in turn, increases the risk of piston seizure and damage to the engine. The chemical composition of the fuel is also important. Some fuel additives not only detrimentally affect elastomers (carburetor diaphragms, oil seals, fuel lines, etc.), but magnesium castings and catalytic converters as well. This could cause running problems or even damage the engine. For this reason STIHL recommends that you use only nationally recognized high-quality unleaded gasoline!Use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil or equivalent high-quality two-stroke engine oils that are designed for use only in air cooled two-cycle engines. We recommend STIHL 50:1 two-stroke engine oil since it is specially formulated for use in STlHL engines. Do not use BIA or TCW rated (two- stroke water cooled) mix oils or other mix oils that state they are for use in both water cooled and air cooled engines (e.g., outboard motors, snowmobiles, chainsaws, mopeds, etc.). Take care when handling gasoline. Avoid direct contact with the skin and avoid inhaling fuel vapor. When filling at the pump, first remove the canister from your vehicle and place the canister on the ground before filling. Do not fill fuel canisters that are sitting in or on a vehicle. The canister should be kept tightly closed in order to avoid any moisture getting into the mixture. The machine‘s fuel tank and the canister in which fuel mix is stored should be cleaned as necessary.Fuel mix ages Only mix sufficient fuel for a few days work, not to exceed 3 months of storage. Store in approved fuel-canisters only. When mixing, pour oil into the canister first, and then add gasoline. Close the canister and shake it vigorously by hand to ensure proper mixing of the oil with the fuel. Dispose of empty mixing-oil canisters only at authorized disposal locations.Fuel Gaso- lineOil (STIHL 50:1 or equivalent high-quality oils) US gal. US fl.oz 12.6 2 1/2 6.4 512.8
27 FS 300, FS 350, FS 400, FS 450, FS 480English / USA Before fueling, clean the filler cap and the area around it to ensure that no dirt falls into the tank. Always thoroughly shake the mixture in the can before fueling your machine. In order to reduce the risk of burns or other personal injury from escaping gas vapor and fumes, remove the fuel filler cap carefully so as to allow any pressure build-up in the tank to release slowly.. After fueling, tighten down the filler cap by hand as securely as possible.Change the fuel pickup body every year. Before storing your machine for a long period, drain and clean the fuel tank. Run the engine until the carburetor is dry.:Put on the full harness (1). :Adjust length until the spring hook (2) is about a hand’s width below your right hip. Over-long straps can be cut to length after making the adjustments. :Attach the spring hook to the machine’s perforated strip (3). 28 English / USA FS 300, FS 350, FS 400, FS 450, FS 480 :Attach machine to the harness. Let it go and check to see how it is balanced – change the attachment point of the spring hook as necessary: Mowing tools (mowing heads, grass cutting blades, brush knives, Shredder blades) should just touch the ground (top illustration). Circular saw blades should hover about 20 cm (8 in) above the ground (bottom illustration). Starting:Observe safety precautions – see section Safety Precautions in this manual. :Hold down the trigger interlock (1) and squeeze the throttle trigger (2). Keep both levers in that position. :Move the slide control (3) to START and hold it there. :Now release the throttle trigger, slide control and throttle trigger interlock in that order. This is the starting throttle position.:Set the choke knob (4): For cold start to g For warm start to e (Also use this setting if engine has been running but is still cold) :Press the fuel pump bulb (5) at least five times, even if the bulb is still filled with fuel. :Press in decompression valve button (6). 29 FS 300, FS 350, FS 400, FS 450, FS 480English / USA :Place the unit on the ground: It must rest securely on the engine support and the deflector. Check that the cutting tool is not touching the ground or any other obstacles. :Make sure you have a firm footing. :Press the unit firmly against the ground with your left hand. Do not stand or kneel on the drive tube. :Pull the starter grip slowly with your right hand until you feel it engage – and then give it a brisk strong pull. Do not pull out the starter rope to full length – it might break. :Do not let the starter grip snap back – guide it slowly into the housing so that the starter rope can rewind properly. :Continue cranking. When engine begins to fire :Turn the choke knob to e :Press in decompression valve button again and continue cranking. As soon as the engine runs :Blip the throttle trigger (2) so that the slide control (3) moves to the normal run position # and the engine settles down to idle speed. Make sure the carburetor is correctly adjusted – the cutting tool must not rotate when the engine is idling. Your brushcutter is now ready for operation. To shut down the engine:Move the slide control to 0 c At very low outside temperatures: As soon as engine runs: :Blip the throttle trigger. The slide control moves to the normal run position # and the engine settles down to idle speed. :Open the throttle slightly. :Warm up engine for brief period. FS 400, 450: Change over to winter operation if necessary – see chapter Winter Operation. If the engine does not startIf you did not turn the choke knob to e (warm start) quickly enough after the engine began to fire, the combustion chamber has flooded. :Set slide control, interlock lever and throttle trigger to the starting throttle position. :Start the engine by pulling the starter rope firmly. 10 to 20 pulls may be necessary. 256BA021 KN 3 START 2 STOP 256BA022 KN
