171Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Setting the General preferences Turning on or off the Beam Receive feature You can choose to turn off the Beam Receive feature. This prohibits anyone from beaming information to your CLIÉ handheld. It also results in a slight saving of battery power. By default, the Beam Receive is set to On. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to Beam Receive and then select On or Off from the drop-down list. •On: Enables the Beam Receive feature. •Off: Disables the Beam Receive feature.
172Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Entering owner information The Owner Preferences screen enables you to record a name, company name, or phone number, or any other information that you want to associate with your CLIÉ handheld. If you use the Security application to lock your CLIÉ handheld with a password, the information that you enter in the Owner Preferences screen appears the next time you turn on your CLIÉ handheld. 1Tap Owner from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Owner Preferences screen is displayed. 2Enter your owner information. If you enter more text than can fit on one screen, a scroll bar appears at the right side of the screen. To unlock the Owner Preferences screen If you assigned a password in the Security application, the information in the Owner Preferences screen cannot be changed. In this case, an Unlock button is displayed at the bottom of the screen. 1Tap Unlock. The Unlock Message dialog box appears. 2Enter your current password (the one you entered in the Security application) and then tap OK.
173Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Creating Graffiti® ShortCuts The ShortCuts Preferences screen enables you to define abbreviations (ShortCuts) for entering text with Graffiti® strokes. You can create a ShortCut for any words, letters, or numbers. All ShortCuts you create appear on the list in the ShortCut Preferences screen. All the ShortCuts are available in any of your CLIÉ applications and are backed up on your computer when you perform a HotSync operation. See “Using Graffiti ® writing to enter data” on page 13 for more information on the use of ShortCuts. 1Tap ShortCut from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The ShortCut Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap New. The ShortCut Entry screen is displayed. 3On the ShortCut name line, enter the letters you want to use to activate the ShortCut. 4Tap the ShortCut Text area and then enter the text that you want to appear when you write the ShortCut characters. 5Tap OK.

To Delete a ShortCut If you no longer need a ShortCut, you can delete it from the list of ShortCuts. 1Tap the ShortCut you want to delete in the ShortCuts list and then tap Delete. 175Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) In order to use your CLIÉ handheld with a network (such as using the Web Clipping application or performing a network HotSync operation), you must set the Network Preferences settings. Note The Network settings preferences provides the ability to connect to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or dial-in (remote access) server with applications (e.g. Web Clipping) that allow you to view the transmitted data. Selecting a service Use the Service setting to select the service template for your Internet Service Provider or a dial-in server. Service templates are a set of ISP and dial-in server configuration settings that you can create, save, and reuse. 1 Tap Network from the the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. 176Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Entering a user name The User Name setting identifies the name you use when you log into your Internet Service Provider or your dial-in server. 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap User Name field. 2 Enter your user name. Notes •Although this field can contain multiple lines of text, only two lines appear onscreen. •Most dial-in servers do not accept spaces in the user name. Entering a password The Password box identifies the password you use to log into your server or ISP. Your entry in this field determines whether your CLIÉ handheld prompts you to enter a password each time you log into your network: • If you do not enter a password, your CLIÉ handheld displays the word “-Prompt-” in this field and asks you to enter a password during the log in procedure. • If you enter a password, your CLIÉ handheld displays the word “-Assigned-” in this field and does not prompt you to enter a password during the log in procedure. Note If you are concerned about security, select the Prompt option and do not enter a password. 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap the Password field. 2 Enter the password you use to log into your server. 3Tap OK. 177Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Selecting a connection Use the Connection setting to select the method you want to use to connect to your Internet Service Provider or a dial-in server. 1On the Network Preferences screen, tap the arrow V next to Connection and then select the connection you want to use. •When using Sony CLIÉ Modem PEGA-MD700: select Sony CLIÉ Modem. •When using another modem or adapter: select Standard Modem. Adding telephone settings When you select the Phone field, your handheld opens a dialog box in which you define the telephone number you use to connect with your ISP or dial-in server. In addition, you can also define a prefix, disable Call Waiting, and give special instructions for using a calling card. Note The Phone Setup dialog box works correctly for AT&T and Sprint long-distance services. However, because MCI works differently, MCI customers need to put the calling card number in the Phone # field and the phone number in the Use calling card field. 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap the Phone field. The Phone Setup screen appears. 2 Enter the phone number for your ISP or dial-in server in the Phone# field. Changing the Network preferences Continued on next page

When using another modem or adapter, change the settings as follows: 1Enter the telephone number used to access the modem. If needed, enter a dial prefix (such as “9”) to access an outside line, and then tap the Dial prefix check box. You can enter a comma in the field to introduce a “pause” in the dialing sequence. Each comma equals a two second pause. 2If the phone line you’re using for your CLIÉ handheld has Call Waiting, select the “Disable call waiting” check box to avoid an interruption during a modem HotSync operation or accessing a Web Clipping site. Note Each telephone company assigns a code to disable Call Waiting. Contact your local telephone company for the code that is appropriate for you. 3If you want to use a calling card to place the call, select the “Use calling card” check box and enter the calling card number. Tip There is usually a delay before you enter your calling card number. It’s a good idea to add at least three commas before your calling card number to compensate for the cue delay. 4Tap OK. 179Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Creating additional service templates You can create additional service templates from scratch or by duplicating existing templates and editing information. After you create a new or duplicate template, you can add and edit settings. To add a new service template 1On the Network Preferences screen, tap the Menu icon. 2Tap New from the Service menu. An Untitled service template is added to the drop-down list for the Service field. To duplicate an existing service template 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap the arrow V next to Service and then select the predefined service template you want to duplicate. 2 Tap the Menu icon . 3 Tap Duplicate from the Service menu. A copy of the service template is added to the drop-down list for the Service field. To delete a service template 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap the arrow V next to Service and then select the predefined service template you want to delete. 2 Tap the Menu icon . 3 Tap Delete from the Service menu. The Delete Service dialog box is displayed. 4 Tap OK. The selected service template is deleted. Changing the Network preferences
180Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Adding detailed information to a service template If you are using one of the predefined service templates, you probably only need to enter your user name and telephone number. If you are creating a new service template, you may need to provide additional information to your ISP or dial-in server. You use the Details dialog box to add additional information to a selected service template. To select a connection type 1 On the Network Preferences screen, tap the service field. 2 Tap Details. The Details screen is displayed. 3 Tap the arrow V next to Connection type and select one of the following connection types. • PPP: Point-to-Point protocol • SLIP: Serial Line Internet Protocol • CSLIP: Compressed Serial Line Internet Protocol Tip If you are not sure, try PPP; if that doesn’t work, ask your Internet Service Provider or your System Administrator for the correct connection type. 4 Tap the arrow V next to Idle timeout and select one of the following options. •1 minute: Waits one minute for you to open another application before it drops the connection. •2 minutes: Waits two minutes. •3 minutes: Waits three minutes. •Never: Keeps your PPP or SLIP connection until you turn off your CLIÉ handheld (or until it times out).
