161Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Changing the full-screen pen stroke activities The Buttons Preferences screen enables you to change the assignment of the full-screen pen stroke. By default, the full-screen pen stroke activates the Graffiti ® Help. 1Tap Buttons from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Buttons Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap Pen. 3Tap the arrow V and then select one of the following settings for the full-screen pen stroke. •Backlight: Turns on the backlight of your CLIÉ handheld without using the POWER button. •Keyboard: Opens the onscreen keyboard for entering text. •Graffiti Help: Opens a series of screens that show the complete Graffiti character set. •Turn Off & Lock: Turns off and locks your CLIÉ handheld. To lock your CLIÉ handheld, assign a password. When locked, you need to enter the password to use your CLIÉ handheld. •Beam Data: Beams the current record to another Palm OS ® PDA. 4Tap OK. 162Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Assigning applications to HotSync® buttons The Buttons Preferences screen also enables you to assign different applications to the HotSync® buttons on the cradle (not supplied) and the modem (not supplied). 1Tap Buttons from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Buttons Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap HotSync. The HotSync Buttons dialog box appears. 3Tap the arrow V next to each button and then select the application you want to assign to the button. The HotSync button assignment is changed. 4Tap OK. You can set to use the Jog Dial navigator to operate a third-party application that is not designed to use Jog Dial navigator operations (JogAssist feature). Notes •The functions activated by the JogAssist feature differ depending on the application you use. •In some applications with the Jog Dial navigator mark, part of the functions may change when the JogAssist feature is enabled. •The JogAssist feature does not support menu operations. 1Tap Jog from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Jog Preferences screen is displayed. 2To enable the JogAssist function, select Use JogAssist. The Jog Dial navigator functions change. On the default settings Use JogAssist is selected ( ).
164Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Setting the display format of the time, date, and numbers (Formats) The Formats Preferences screen enables you to set the region default, and the display format of dates, times, and numbers on your CLIÉ handheld. Selecting a region default When you select the region where you use your CLIÉ handheld, the display format of the time, date, the week start day, and numbers is adjusted. For example, in England, time is expressed using a 24-hour clock; in the United States, time is expressed using a 12-hour clock with an AM or PM suffix. All your CLIÉ applications use the Region default settings. However, you can customize your own settings for time, date, week start day, or numbers. 1Tap Formats from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The Formats Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to “Preset to” and then select a region name. 3Tap OK.

The selected formats apply to all your CLIÉ applications. 1On the Formats Preferences screen, tap the arrow V next to Time and then select the desired format from the drop-down list. 2Tap the arrow V next to Date and then select the desired format from the drop-down list. 3Tap the arrow V next to “Week starts” and then select whether you want the first day of the week to be Sunday or Monday. This setting controls the Day, Week, Month, and Agenda views in Date Book and all other aspects of your CLIÉ handheld that display a calendar. 4Tap the arrow V next to Numbers and then select formats for the decimal point and thousands separator. After you set the local date and time of your home base, you can change the displayed time (for example, during business trips) by simply switching the time zones. 169Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) The General Preferences screen enables you to set the auto shut-off interval and sounds for your CLIÉ handheld. Setting the automatic shut-off time Your CLIÉ handheld has an automatic shut-off feature that turns off the power after a period of inactivity. This feature helps conserve battery power in case you forget to turn off your CLIÉ handheld. If you find that your CLIÉ handheld shuts itself off too early or too late, you can increase or decrease the time setting for the automatic shut-off feature. By default, your CLIÉ handheld will turn off after two minutes of inactivity and will be on as long as it is connected to a cradle (not supplied). 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to Auto-off after and then select the desired time setting for the automatic shut-off feature. You can select 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 3 minutes. Setting the General preferences Continued on next page
170Chapter5Customizing your Sony CLIÉ Handheld (Preferences) Setting the General preferences 3If you want to leave your CLIÉ handheld turned on while it is connected to a cradle, make sure that the check box next to “Stay on in Cradle” is selected. To turn it off automatically, clear the check box. Setting sounds Your CLIÉ handheld uses a variety of sounds. The System, Alarm, and Game Sound settings enable you to turn the sounds on or off, and to adjust the volume level. 1Tap General from the drop-down list on the Preferences screen. The General Preferences screen is displayed. 2Tap the arrow V next to System Sound and then select the desired sound level or Off from the drop-down list. When you turn the System Sound off, you also turn off the “chime” tones associated with the HotSync operation. 3Tap the arrow V next to Alarm Sound and then select the desired sound level from the drop-down list. 4Tap the arrow V next to Game Sound and then select the desired sound level or Off from the drop-down list. The Game Sound setting works only with the games that are programmed to respond to this setting.
