Connections 143 Wi-Fi Status Indicators The following icons show your Wi-Fi connection status at a glance: Displays when Wi-Fi is connected, active, and communicating with a Wireless Access Point (WAP). Displays when there is a Wi-Fi access point available but you are not connected to it. May also display if there is a communication issue with the target Wireless Access Point (WAP). Displays when connected to another device using Wi-Fi Direct. For more information, refer to “Wi-Fi Direct” on page 144. Wi-Fi Advanced Settings The Advanced Wi-Fi menu allows you to set up many of your device’s advanced Wi-Fi services. 1. From any Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi. 2. Ta p ➔ Advanced. The following options are available: Network notification: alerts you when a new WAP is available. : allows you to connect to passpoint-enabled Wi-Fi Access Points automatically. : allows you to sort by alphabet or RSSI. Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: allows you to specify when to disconnect from Wi-Fi. Always allow scanning: allows the Google location service and other apps to scan for networks, even when Wi-Fi is turned off. : allows you to be automatically connected to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspot as soon as your phone detects it. Install certificates: allows you to install security certificates that you have on a MicroSD card. : view your device’s MAC address, required when connecting to some secured networks (not configurable). : view your device’s IP address. 144 Wi-Fi Direct Wi-Fi Direct allows device-to-device connections so you can transfer large amounts of data over a Wi-Fi connection. Note: See your service plan for applicable charges for Wi-Fi Direct. 1. From any Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Wi-Fi. 2. Tap the ON/OFF slider, located to the right of the Wi-Fi field, to turn Wi-Fi ON . 3. Ta p ➔ Wi-Fi Direct. Your phone automatically scans for other Wi-Fi Direct devices. 4. Repeat steps 1 - 3 on the other device you want to connect with. The steps on a different model of phone, may be different. 5. Once the device you want to connect to is displayed, tap on it. 6. The other device has 2 minutes to tap Accept for the connection to be made. 7. Once connected, the other device will show as Connected in your list of Wi-Fi Direct devices and the icon will display at the top of your screen. 8. Ta p for additional options. Sharing Information with Connected Device To share Videos, Photos, or other information with the connected device, follow these steps: 1. View the information that you want to share. For example, if you want to share a photo, find the photo in your camera viewer or My Files folder, then tap the Share, Share via, or Send via option. 2. Ta p t h e Wi-Fi Direct option. 3. Tap the connected device name. For example, Android_49a. 4. Ta p Done. 5. The file is transferred and the other device will receive a screen notification that a Wi-Fi file has been received. Connections 145 Note: Depending on the other device model, the prompts and shared folder information may differ. NFC NFC (Near Field Communication) allows data exchange when you touch your device with another compatible device. This is used for applications such as S Beam. To activate NFC on your device, see “NFC” on page 89. Android Beam When Android Beam is activated, you can beam app content to another NFC-capable device by holding the devices close together. You can beam browser pages, YouTube videos, contacts, and more. For more information, refer to “Android Beam” on page 89. S Beam When S Beam is activated, you can beam files to another NFC-capable device by holdin g the devices close together. You can beam images and videos from your Gallery, music files from your Music app, and more. For more information, refer to “S Beam” on page 89. Tap and pay Tap and pay allows you to select the default payment application you want to use for making on-phone purchases. For more information, refer to “Tap and pay” on page 89. Bluetooth About Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range communications technology that allows you to connect wirelessly to a number of Bluetooth devices, such as headsets and hands-free car kits, and Bluetooth-enabled handhelds, computers, printers, and wireless devices. The Bluetooth communication range is usually up to approximately 30 feet. Turning Bluetooth On and Off To turn Bluetooth on: 1. From any Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Tap the ON/OFF slider, located to the right of the Bluetooth field, to turn Bluetooth ON . When active, appears within the Status area. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
146 To turn Bluetooth off: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Tap the ON/OFF slider, located to the right of the Bluetooth field, to turn Bluetooth OFF . Bluetooth Status Indicators The following icons show your Bluetooth connection status at a glance: Displays when Bluetooth is active. Displays when Bluetooth is connected (paired) and communicating with another device. Bluetooth Settings The Bluetooth settings menu allo ws you to set up many of the characteristics of your device’s Bluetooth service, including: Entering or changing the name your device uses for Bluetooth communication and description Setting your device’s visibility (or “discoverability”) for other Bluetooth devices To access the Blueto oth Settings menu: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Verify your Bluetooth is ON . For more information, refer to “Bluetooth” on page 82. To change your Bluetooth name: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Ta p ➔ Rename device. 3. After the About device screen displays, tap Device name . 4. Use the keyboard to modify your device name and tap OK. To make your device visible: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth ➔ ➔ Visibility timeout. Making your device visible allows it to be detected by other devices for pairing and communication. 2. Select a time that you would like your device visibility to timeout. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Connections 147 To show received files: From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth ➔ ➔ Received files. A list of all files received from Bluetooth is displayed. To scan for Bluetooth devices: 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetooth. 2. Verify your Bluetooth is ON . 3. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap Scan to search for visible external Bluetooth-compatible devices such as headsets, devices, printers, and computers. Pairing Bluetooth Devices The Bluetooth pairing process a llows you to establish trusted connections between your device and another Bluetooth device. When you pair devices, they share a passkey, allowing for fast, secure connections while bypassing the discovery and authentication process. To pair your device with another Bluetooth device: 1. Verify your Bluetooth is active. 2. Ta p Scan. Your device will display a list of discovered in-range Bluetooth devices. 3. Tap a device from the list to initiate pairing. 4. Enter the passkey or PIN code, if needed, and tap OK. 5. The external device will then have to also accept the connection and enter your device’s PIN code. Once successfully paired to an external device, appears within the Status area. Note: Due to different specifications and features of other Bluetooth-compatible devices, display and operations may be different, and functi ons such as transfer or exchange may not be possible with all Bluetooth compatible devices. Note: Pairing between two Bluetooth devices is a one-time process. Once a pairing has been created, the devices will continue to recogn ize their partnership and exchange information with out having to re-enter a passcode again. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
148 Disconnecting a paired device Disconnecting a paired device breaks the connection between the device and your phone, but retains the knowledge of the pairing. At a later point when you wish to reconnect the device, there is no need to setup the connection information again. 1. Verify your Bluetooth is active. 2. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap the previously paired device (from the bottom of the page). 3. Ta p OK to confirm disconnection. Note: Disconnections are manually done but often occur automatically if the paired de vice goes out of range of your phone or it is powered off. Deleting a paired device (unpair) Deleting a device from your list removes its “connection record” and upon reconnection would require that you re- enter all the previous pairing information. 1. Verify your Bluetooth is active. 2. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap next to the previously paired device . This opens the connected device’s menu options. 3. Ta p Unpair to delete the paired device. 4. Ta p Rename to change the name of the paired device. 5. Ta p Call audio to enable or disable call audio from the paired device. 6. Connections 149 USB Tethering This option allows you to share your device’s mobile data connection via a direct USB connection between your device and a single computer. Note: You can not mount your device’s microSD card to your computer while using the USB tethering feature. If additional software or USB drivers are required, navigate to: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ downloads. To connect using USB Tethering: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot. 2. Plug in the USB cable between your computer and your device. 3. Ta p USB tethering from the Tethering menu. This places a green check mark next to the entry and activates the feature. A Tethering or Ho tSpot active notification briefly appears on the screen. Look for the Tethering active icon in the Status bar area of the screen. 4. Read the on-screen notification regarding data use and tap OK. To disconnect tethering: 1.From the Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot screen, tap USB tethering from the Tethering menu to remove the check mark and deactivate the feature. 2. Remove the USB cable from the device. Mobile Hotspot This feature allows you to turn your device into a Wi-Fi hotspot. The feature works best when used in conjunction with 4G/LTE data services (although 3G service can also be used). The Mobile Hotspot connectivity is a wireless version of this same functionality and allows you to provide Internet connectivity to multiple devices. Important! The Mobile Hotspot service cannot be active when device is connected to Wi-Fi. Please disconnect your Wi-Fi connection prio r to activating this service. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
150 Note: You must have a tethering plan on your account in order to use the Mobile Hotspot. To activate the Mobile Hotspot service: 1.From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the Mobile Hotspot sli der to the right to turn it on. 3. Read the on-screen notification regarding data use and tap OK. 4. Edit the Network SSID name and then write it down. 5. Enable the Broadcast network name (SSID) field if you would like to broadcast your SSID name to nearby devices. 6. Verify the Security field is set to WPA2 PSK. 7. Enter a new password then write it down. –Additional options include Show password and Show advanced options. 8. Ta p Save to store the new settings. 9. Confirm the Mobile Hotspot active icon appears at the top of the screen. Note: By default, the connection is not secured. Note: Using your Mobile Hotspot dr ains your device’s battery much faster. The best way to keep using the device as a HotSpot is by connecting to a Charger. To connect to the Hotspot: 1. Enable Wi-Fi (wireless) functionality on your target device (laptop, media device, etc.). 2. Scan for Wi-Fi networks from the external device and select your device’s Mobi le Hotspot name from the network list. The SSID name for your device’s hotspot is determined by what you entered into the Network SSID field. You can change the name by tapping Menu➔ Configure ➔ Network SSID and changing the entry. 3. Select this HotSpot and follow your on-screen instructions to complete the connection. 4. Launch your Web browser to confirm you have an Internet connection. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Connections 151 To change the Portable HotSpot password: 1.From the Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot screen, tap Mobile Hotspot ➔ Menu ➔Configure. 2. Ta p t h e Security field and select WPA2 PSK. 3. With security enabled, delete the previous password and enter a new one into the Password field. Important! The more complex the password, the harder it will be for intruders to break your security. It is recommended that you not use names, birthdays, or other personal information. 4. Ta p Save to store the new settings. To manage conne cted devices: This feature allows you to provide MAC filtering on your device. This is similar to a “VIP list” where only device on the list are allowed access. 1. From the Tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot screen, tap Menu ➔ Allowed devices ➔ (Add new device) to add devices to the allowed for connection list. 2. Enter the Device name and Mac address. 3. Tip: To open applications quickly, add the icons of frequently- used applications to one of the Home screens. For details, see “Customizing Your Home Screen” on page 29.
