Changing Your Settings 103 Finger Scanner You can use the Finger Scanner feature as an alternative security method for certain actions and as your lockscreen. Note: In order for fingerprint recognition to function, your fingerprint information will be stored in your phone. Registering your fingerprints 1.From the main Settings screen, tap Finger Scanner . 2. If you did not register your fingerprints when you first set up your phone, tap Fingerprint manager. 3. Read the Disclaimer at tap OK. 4. Tap on the finger or thumb that you would like to register. 5. Swipe your finger over the Home key from the first knuckle to the tip of the finger. An animated drawing shows you exactly how. 6. Continue to swipe your finger until the progress bar shows 100%. 7. Enter a password to use as an alternative in case your fingerprint is not read correctly. 8. Confirm the password and tap OK. 9. Your fingerprint is now registered. Tap to return to the fingerprint screen. 10. Under the Settings heading, the following options are available: Fingerprint manager: allows you to register more fingerpints or deregister the fingerprints that are on your phone. Change alternative password: allows you to change your alternative password which is used in case your fingerprint is not recognized. 11. Under the Features heading the following options are available: Screen lock: allows you to sign into websites which support the remember passwords feature. Follow the onscreen instructions. Verify Samsung account: allows you to use your fingerpint instead of your password when signing onto your Samsung account. 104 Motions and gestures The Motions and Gestures settings allow you to set up various Motion activation services. From the main Settings screen, tap Motions and gestures . Air browse Air browse allows you to scroll through pages or go to the next or previous item in a list by moving your hand up and down, or left and right above the sensor located at the middle top of your display. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Motions and gestures ➔ Air browse. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . 3. Tap on the applications that you would like to enable to use the Air browse feature. A checkmark will appear. 4. When using a supported app lication, move your open hand across the screen to use Air browse. Direct call With the Direct Call feature, your phone will dial the currently displayed on-screen Contact entry as soon as you place the device to your ear. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Motions and gestures ➔ Direct call. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . Smart alert Once Smart alert is enabled, you can pickup the device to be alerted and notified if you have missed any calls or messages. 1. Changing Your Settings 105 Mute/Pause Once enabled, you can pause any on-screen video or mute any current sound by simply covering the screen with your hand or turning it over. Once you remove your hand from the screen, the device goes back to normal by either continuing to play the current video or unmuting the current sound. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Motions and gestures ➔ Air browse. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . 3. Tap the following methods that you want to use to Mute/Pause your phone: Covering screen with hand: Place your hand on the screen to mute incoming calls and alarms, or to pause media while the screen is on. Turning device over: Turn your phone over to mute incoming calls, message alerts, and alarms, or to pause media. Smart pause: uses the front camera to detect if you are facing the screen and pauses a video when you look away. Palm swipe to capture Once enabled, you can capture any on-screen information swiping across the screen. In a single motion, press the side of your hand on the screen and swipe form left to right. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Motions and gestures ➔ Palm swipe to capture. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . 3. You can find the captured screen in the Images section in My Files and in your Gallery. Air view When Air view is enabled, it displays helpful information when you hover your finger over the screen. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Air view. 2. The following options are available: Information preview: allows you to preview information, extend text, or enlarge pictures by hovering your finger over the screen. 106 Webpage magnifier: allows you to magnify content on webpages by hovering your finger over the screen. In a single motion touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . Sound and haptic feedback: allows you to play sound and vibrate when hovering your finger over the Air view items. Tap to create a checkmark and activate the feature. Accounts This menu allows you to set up, manage, and synchronize your accounts. From the main Settings screen, tap Accounts. Adding an Account 1.From the main Settings screen, tap Accounts ➔ Add account. 2. Tap one of the account types. 3. Use the keyboard and follow the prompts to enter your credentials and set up the account. A green circle will appear next to the account type once you have created an account . Your email account will also be displayed in the My Accounts section of the main Accounts menu. Removing an Account Important! Removing an account also deletes all of its messages, contacts, and other data from the device. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Accounts. 2. Tap the account which is located in the My Accounts sect ion. 3. Tap the account name. 4. Ta p ➔ Remove account, then tap Remove account at the prompt to remove the account and delete all its messages, contacts, and other data. Synchronizing Accounts Select the items you want to synchronize on your account such as Books, Calendar, Contacts, and more. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Accounts. 2. Tap the account which is located in the My Accounts sect ion. 3. Tap the account name. 4. Ta p ➔ Sync all to synchronize your account or only tap the Sync items that you want to synchronize. Changing Your Settings 107 5. Ta p ➔ Cancel sync to stop the synchronization. 6. Additional settings are av ailable under the account name of each account depending on the type of account. These may include Profile, Terms and conditions, Help, Storage usage, Search, Location, Ads, etc. Back up and reset The Back up and reset settings allow you to back up your data, back up accounts, automatically restore your phone, and reset your phone settings to the factory settings. From the main Settings screen, tap Backup and reset . Back Up My Data By setting this option, the Google server will back up all of your settings and data. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Backup and reset . 2. Ta p Back up my data to enable or disable back up of application data, WI-Fi passwords, and other settings to the Google server. Backup Account If you have enabled the Back up my data option, then the Backup account option is available. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Backup and reset . 2. Ta p Backup account and tap your Google Gmail account or tap Add account to set your Google Gmail account to be backed up to the Google server. Automatic Restore By setting this option, when you re install an application, all of your backed up settings and data will be restored. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Backup and reset . 2. Ta p Automatic restore to enable or disable automatic restoration of settings from the Google server. Factor y Data Reset From this menu you can reset yo ur phone and sound settings to the factory default settings. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Backup and reset . 2. Ta p Factory data reset. 108The Factory data reset screen displays reset information. 3. Ta p Reset device, then follow the prompts to perform the reset. Warning! Performing a Factory data reset will erase all data from your phone and internal SD card, including your Google account, system an d application data and settings, and downloaded applications. It will not erase current system software, bundled applications, and external SD card files such as music and photos. Language and input This menu allows you to confi gure the language in which to display the menus. You can also set on-screen keyboard options. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input . Language You can change the language used by your device by following these steps: 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input ➔ Language. 2. Tap a language from the list. Keyboards and Input Methods You can change the keyboard used by your device by following these steps: 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input . 2. Ta p Default and select a keyboard. Select Samsung keyboard or Swype. 3. Ta p t h e icon next to the input method that you would like to configure the settings for. 4. Changing Your Settings 109 Samsung Keyboard settings From this menu you can set Samsung keyboard options.1. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input . 2. Ta p t h e icon next to Samsung keyboard. 3. Set any of the following options: Input languages settings are used to setup the language you will be using for input. –English(US) is the default language. Whatever language you select in the Select input languages option below, will be displayed here. –Select input languages sets the input language. Tap a language from the available list. The keyboard is updated to the selected language. Smart typing settings provide access to additional typing settings. –Predictive text enables predictive text entry mode. This must be enabled to gain access to the advanced settings. Touch and hold to access the advanced settings. Touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . –Auto replacement automatically completes or replaces the current word with the most probable word match after tapping the space bar or entering a punctuation mark. Touch and slide the slider to the right to turn it on . –My Shortcuts creates number key shortcuts to enter predefined words or phrases more quickly. –Auto capitalization automatically capitalizes the first letter of the first word in each sentence (standard English style). –Auto spacing automatically inserts space between words. –Auto punctuate automatically inserts a full stop in a sentence by tapping the space bar twice when using the on-screen QWERTY keyboard. –Keyboard swipe allows you to combine the Samsung keyboard with an additional input method choose from: –None leaves text input as only via the on-screen keyboard. –SwiftKey Flow like using Swipe, allows you to enter text by sliding your fingers across the on-screen keyboard. This feature is optimized for use with the on-screen QWERTY keyboard. –Cursor control when enabled, allows you to control your on-screen cursor by moving your finger across the keyboard. 110 – Flick input allows you to flick upwards on a key to view symbols and alternative characters. Key-tap feedback provides feedback functions to be enabled such as: –Sound enables auditory feedback when you tap an on-screen key. –Vibration enables vibration feedback when you tap an on-screen key. –Character preview provides an automatic preview of the current character selection within the text string. This is helpful when multiple characters are available within one key. –Press and hold delay: allows you to select a time interval for this action. Choose from: Short, Medium, Long, or Custom. More settings provides access to additional access to more settings. –Reset settings resets the keyboard settings back to their original configuration. Predictive Text Settings From this menu you can set Predictive Text settings. 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input . 2. Ta p t h e icon next to Samsung keyboard. 3. Tap the ON/OFF slider, located to the right of the Predictive text field, to turn it ON . 4. Ta p Predictive text. 5. The following options are available: Live word update allows the device to automatically update its word database with popular new words every day. Personalized data: allows you to use personal language that you have added to make your prediction results better. Learn from Facebook: allows you to login to your Facebook account so your phone can learn your Facebook style. Learn from Gmail: allows you to login to your Gmail account so your phone can learn your Gmail style. Learn from Twitter: allows you to login to your Twitter account so your phone can learn your Twitter style. Learn from Messages: allows your device to learn from your Messages. Clear personal data: removes all personalized data that you have entered. : click the link to read the privacy policy. Follow the on-screen instructions. Swype Keypad Settings To configure Swype settings: 1. From the main Settings screen, tap Language and input . 2. Ta p t h e icon next to Swype. 3. Ta p Settings on the left side of the screen to alter these settings: Vibrate on keypress: activates a vibration sensation as you enter text using the keypad. Sound on keypress: turns on sounds generated by the Swype application. Pop-up on keypress: displays the character above the key when typing. Long-press delay: set the time needed to select alternate characters. Show complete trace: once enabled, sets wether or not to display the complete Swype path. Auto-capitalization: automatically capitalizes the first letter of every sentence. : automatically inserts a space between words. When you finish a word, just lift your finger or stylus and start the next word. Next word prediction: once enabled, predicts the next word in your text string based on your current text entries. Show Voice key: once enabled, displays the Voice icon on your Swype keyboard so you can use the Voice input option. 4. Ta p Themes on the left side of the screen to access the following options: Portrait keyboard: allows you to set the Portrait keyboard to Full screen, Mini left, or Mini right. Landscape keyboard: allows you to set the Landscape keyboard to Full screen, Mini left, Mini right, or split. 112 Word choice list font size: allows you to change the font size in the word choice list. 5. Ta p My Words on the left side of the screen to access the following options: Backup & Sync: allows you to backup your Swype dictionary and sync your Swype dictionary across multiple devices. Living Language: when enabled, this feature automatically updates your Swype dictionary with popular new words. Social integration: allows you to learn information from your Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail accounts to help you while using Swype. Edit my dictionary: allows you to edit your personal Swype dictionary. Clear language data: deletes all of your personal language data, including your words. Contribute usage data: when enabled, allows the Nuance® application to collect usage data for better word predictions. : when enabled, activates cellular data usage by the Swype application so it can receive program updates, language downloads, and other related features via your existing data connection. 6. Ta p Languages on the left side of th e screen to activate and select the current text input language. Default language is English. Touch Download languages, to download additional languages. 7. Ta p Gestures on the left side of the screen to view helpful information on using gestures while using Swype. 8. Ta p Help on the left side of the screen to see the following options: : provides tips on how to learn to use Swype. Show helpful tips: once enabled, displays helpful tips and hints as you are using Swype. : displays the software version information. 9. Ta p Updates on the left side of th e screen to download any new Swype updates. If an update is available, it will display under the updates heading.
