Rotating the Screen Many applications allow display in either portrait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display to automatically adjust to fit the new screen orientation. To prevent the display from rotating automatically, open the Notification panel and deselect Screen rotation. Note: Some applications do not allow screen rotation, and some applications display a different screen depending on the orientation. Voice Commands Use voice commands to control and interact with the phone: • Incoming calls: Say “Answer” or “Reject” to answer or reject a call. When you answer a call, the speaker automatically turns on for hands-free conversation. • Alarm : Say “Stop” or “Snooze” to stop or snooze an alarm. • Camera : Say “Smile”, “Cheese”, “Capture”, or “Shoot” to take pictures. • Music : Say “Next”, “Previous”, “Play”, “Pause”, “Volume Up”, or “Volume Down” to control the music player. Customizing Your Home Screen You can customize your Home screen by doing the following: • Adding shortcuts and widgets • Creating folders • Changing the wallpaper Shortcuts and Widgets You can add, reposition, or remove shortcuts and widgets from the Home screen. • Shortcuts : Icons on the Home screen which launch applications. • Widgets : Self-contained applications. They appear as onscreen applications. Note: Primary shortcuts appear at the bottom of the display screen. You can modify primary shortcuts just like regular shortcuts, except for Apps. Adding a Shortcut or Widget You can customize the Home screen by adding shortcuts and widgets. 1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen. On the pop-up menu, touch Apps and widgets. – or – Ta p Apps to display the Apps screen. 2. For shortcuts, touch the Apps tab. For widgets, touch the Widgets tab. 3. Touch and hold the shortcut or widget, and then drag it to a position on the Home screen and release. Removing a Shortcut or Widget Shortcuts and widgets can be removed from the Home screen. Note: Removing a shortcut does not delete the application, it simply removes the shortcut from the Home screen. � Touch and hold the shortcut or widget until it detaches, and then drag it to Remove and release. 26
Folders Place folders on the Home screen to organize items. Adding Folders 1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen. On the pop-up menu, touch Folder. 2. The folder displays on th e Home screen. Touch the folder to name it. Using Folders � To add shortcuts to the folder, touch and hold the shortcut, and then drag it to the folder and release. � Touch the folder to open it and access the shortcuts inside. � To delete a folder, touch and hold the folder until it detaches, and then drag it to Remove and release. Note: All shortcuts contained in the folder will also be deleted. Wallpaper Choose a picture to display in the background of the Home screen. Note: You can also set Wallpaper in Settings. For more information, see “Wallpaper” on page 125. 1. Navigate to a Home screen panel, then touch and hold on the screen to display the Home screen menu. 2. Choose Set wallpaper , and then choose Home screen, Lock screen , or Home and lock screens . 3. Choose a source: • Gallery : Choose a picture stored on your device or on an optional installed memory card. • Live wallpapers: Choose from pre-loaded interactive moving wallpapers (Home screen only). •Photos: Choose a photo stored in your Google Photos account (Home screen only). •Wallpapers: Choose from pre-loaded wallpaper images. • Travel wallpaper: Display travel recommendations. Smart Stay Smart stay is a Smart screen features use the front camera to detect when you are facing the screen. Some factors that may affect the ability of the front camera to detect your face are: • When the phone is not docked or held upright, for example when placed on a table. • When the front camera cannot detect your face and eyes. • When the front camera is being used for the current application. • When the source of light is behind you, or when using the phone in the dark. Smart stay allows your phone to automatically adjust the screen timeout when it detects you are looking at the screen. Configure Smart Stay For more information, refer to “Smart Screen” on page 148. Screen Capture Capture an image of the current screen display. � Press and hold both the Power/Lock Key and Home. When a screen capture occurs, a white border will flash around the edge of the screen. The image is saved to the Screenshots album in Gallery. A copy of the image is also saved to the clipboar d. To view the screenshot: 1. From a Home screen, tap Apps ➔ Gallery. 2. To u c h t h e album titled Screenshots. 3. Touch a screenshot preview to display it. 28
Entering Text Your device uses a virtual QWERTY keyboard for text entry. Use the keyboard to enter letter s, punctuation, numbers, and other characters into text entry fields or applications. Access the keyboard by touching any text entry field. You can also use voice input to speak your inputs. Note: When you rotate the device, the screen updates to display the keyboard at th e bottom of the screen. Text Input Methods There are three text input methods available: • Google voice typing: Enter text by speaking. • Samsung keyboard (default): A QWERTY keyboard that can be used in both portrait and landscape orientation. • Swype: Instead of touching each key to enter text, use your finger to trace over each letter of a word. Select a Default Text Input Method You can select a default Text I nput Method from Settings, or choose one at any time while entering text. From Settings: 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ My device My device My device. 2. To u c h Language and input ➔ Default to select Samsung keyboard or Swype. While entering text: 1. Touch the top of the screen and swipe downward to display the Notification Panel. 2. To u c h Select input method , and then choose a text entry method. Using Samsung Keyboard The Samsung keyboard is a virtual QWERTY keyboard. Input characters by touching the onscreen keys with your fingers. You can enable predictive text to have the Samsung keyboard match your key touches to common words and display them. Select a word from the display to insert it into your text. Google voice typing is accessible directly from the keyboard, allowing you to enter text using your voice. See “Using Google Voice Typing” on page 32 . Understanding Your Phone 29
. Configure Samsung Keyboard For more information, refer to “Samsung Keyboard” on page 142 . Entering Upper and Lower Case Letters The default case is lower case (abc). Enter upper and lower case alphabet letter s by touching the Shift key to toggle the case, before touching the letter keys. • Touch once to switch from abc to Abc mode. • Touch twice to switch to ABC mode. When ABC mode is enabled, the Shift key background turns blue Entering Symbols and Numbers • To enter numbers and common symbols, touch 123Sy123 m Sym and then touch the desired key. • To enter less-common symbols, touch 123Sy123 m Sym ➔ 1/2 , and then touch the desired key. • Each key consists of a main character or symbol (such as ‘a’ ), plus additional characters (such as @, æ , à, â, etc.). Touch and hold a key to open a small menu of additional characters. (If there is only one additional character (such as the letter ‘ m’ which only has the additional character ‘ ~ ’), then that character is automatically selected and entered into your text.) • Touch and hold the period key ( . ) to open a small window with a set of common symbols. Using Predictive Text By using Predictive text, you ca n have next-letter prediction and regional error correction, which compensates for touching the wrong keys on the QWERTY keyboard. Note: Enable Predictive text in Samsung keyboard settings. For more information, refer to “Samsung Keyboard” on page 142 . While entering characters, pote ntial word matches display in the Predictiv e text area above the keyboard. � Touch a word to insert it into your text. � Touch to display more words. Using Google Voice Typing from the Samsung Keyboard When you enable the Google vo ice typing setting, you can use your voice to enter te xt instead of the keyboard. For more information about enabling Voice input, see “Using Google Voice Typing” on page 32. 30 1/2
Closing the Keyboard � To u c h Back to close the keyboard. Editing Text You can edit the text you enter in text fields by cutting, copying, or pasting text. These operations can be performed within and across apps. Howeve r, some apps do not support editing of some or all of the text displayed, while others may offer their own way to select text. Editing Existing Text 1. Touch the text at the point you want to edit. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. Touch and drag the Cursor to a better position, if necessary. 3. Enter additional text or delete text by repeatedly touching the Delete key. Copying, Deleting, or Replacing Text 1. Touch and hold the text or word you want to select. The selected text is highligh ted with a tab at each end of the selection. 2. Touch and drag either tab to select more or less text. Tip: Touch Select all in the pop-up to select all text in the field. Touch on another area of the screen to deselect the text. 3. Depending on the action you want to take for the selected text, in the pop-up touch: • Select all to highlight all text in the field. •Cut to remove the selected text. •Copy to save the selected text to the clipboard. •Paste to paste previously copied text. • Clipboard to display the text saved to the clipboard. •Translate to translate the highlighted word. For more information, refer to “S Translator” on page 113 . – or – Enter text by typing or speaking to replace the selection with what you type. – or – To u c h t h e Delete key to delete the selected text. Touch the Cursor. A pop up displays. To paste text directly from the clipboard: Touch and h old . from the pop - up menu to display the text saved to the clipboard. The software converts your voice to text, which displays in the message. Pasting Text To paste previously copied text: 1. Touch the text at the point you want to paste the copied text. Using Swype Swype is a text input method that allows you to enter a word by sliding your finger or stylus from letter to letter, lifting your finger between words. Swype uses error correcting algorithms and a language model to predict the next word. Swype also includes a touch predictive text system. � While entering text, touch and drag downward from the top of the screen to display Notifications, then touch Select input method ➔ Swype . Using the Numeric Keyboard Switch to a numeric keyboard, to quickly enter numbers and arithmetical operators (+, -, *). � Touch and hold , and then slide to touch 123 123. Entering Symbols And Numbers Using the Swype Keyboard: • Touch and hold on a key to ente r the character at the top of the key. • Touch and hold on a key until a menu of all characters available on that key appears; then touch a character to enter it. • Touch to switch to Symbol mode; then touch a key. Editing Keyboard The Editing keyboard provides a quick way to move the cursor and highlight text. If th e application in which you are working supports editing, you can cut, copy or paste highlighted text. � Swype from Swype to . Using Swype Voice Input Enter text by speaking. Swyp e recognizes your speech and enters text for you. � To u c h Voice Input . At the prompt, speak the text you want to enter. Understanding Your Phone 33
Swype Tips The following example shows ho w to enter the word “This”. Put your finger down on the “T”, and without lifting, glide it to the “h”, then to the “i” then over to the “s”. Here are a few tips to get you started: • Auto-spacing : When you finish a word, just lift your finger and start the next word. • Double letters : Just “scribble” on the key. • Auto-capitalization : Swype recognizes and capitalizes the first word of sentences. If you want to capitalize a word that is not at the beginning of a sentence, just glide above the keyboard before gliding over the next letter. • Contractions : Swype recognizes most words that include an apostrophe, just swype the letters of the word, including the apostrophe. • Punctuation : Touch and hold a key to view a punctuation menu and make a selection. • Accented characters : Just glide through the letters of the word. Swype usually recogniz es the word and correctly accents the letters. • Error correction : If you make a mistake, double-tap on the word you want to change.
