Add VPN to enter the following: C VPN Set up and manage Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Note: VPN settings include storage of login credentials on your phone. You must configure a screen unlock pattern, PIN or password before setting up a VPN. For more information, refer to “Screen Lock” on page 122. Configure a Basic VPN 1. From the Home screen, touch 2. Touch •Name : Enter the name of the VPN. •Type : Choose the type of VPN. • Server address : Ent er the VPN server address. • PPP Encryption (MPPE) : Touch to enable, if applicable. • Show advanced options : Touch to set other options, depending on the type of VPN. 4. Touch Save to save the VPN. NFC and Beaming Use NFC (Near Field Communication) to share information between your phone and another NFC capable device by touching the devices together (typically back-to-back). NFC beams transmits files using two protocols: • Android Beam for sending smaller files such as browser pages, YouTube videos, contacts, pictures, etc. • S B e am for sending larger files, such as HD videos. Note: Each a pp determines what kind of data is beamed. Not all apps use NFC, and not all files can be transmitted using NFC. Turn NFC On or Off 1. With the file you wish to share displayed or opened on your phone, simply touch your phone to the target device (typically back-to-back). Your phone will vibrate to indicate it is able to transmit the file. 6. After the vibration, touch your screen to send the file to the target device. 7. Nearby Devices Configure File Sharing . 1. From the Home screen, touch Settings ➔ Turn File Sharing On or Off Important! Use care when enabling file s haring for nearby devices. When e nabled, other devices can access data on your de vice. Share your media files wit h nearby devices via Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or Mobile hotspot. n C Screen Mirroring Use the Screen Mirroring feature to share media files on your phone with an HDMI device, such as an HDMI TV. Note: This feature requires an optional AllShare Cast dongle accessory (not included). 1. Connect the AllShare Cast dongle to the HDMI device using an HDMI A-to-A cable. 2. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ . 4. Touch a device, a d follow the onscreen prompts. Settings ➔ onnectionsConnections Touch Screen Mirr oring . Your phone will scan for available devic es. 3. Note: Press Menu ➔ Help for more information. Connect to a Computer Connect your device to a computer to transfer data between your device and the computer. USB Connection Connect your device to a computer with a USB cable to transfer data as a Media device (Media Transfer Protocol or MTP), or as a Camera using PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol or PTP). 1. Attach your device to the computer with a USB data cable. Your device recogniz es the connection as the last connection method you used, and displays a connection alert in the Status bar and Notifications. 2. From the Home screen, sweep your finger downward to display Notifications, then touch the alert. 98 ConnectionsConnections
3. Select a connection method: • Media device (MTP) : Transfer media and data files using Windows Media Player on a PC, or use Android File Transfer on a Mac (visit android.com/filetransfer to download the software). • Camera (PTP) : Transfer photos using camera software, and transfer files to computers that do not support MTP. 4. On your computer, choose a method for accessing your device. Available options depend on the programs installed on your computer. 5. Transfer files to the memory card. When finished, you can disconnect the USB cable. Connections 99
Section 8: Applications This section contains a descriptio n of each application that is available on the Apps screen , its function, and how to navigate through that particular application. If the application is described in another section of this user manual, then a cross reference to that description is provided. Accessing Applications To access applications: 1. From a Home screen, 2. Locate the application’s icon and touch it to launch the application. 3. To return to the main Home screen, press Home . Tip: Add shortcuts to frequently-used applications to one of the Home screens. For more information, refer to “Shortcuts and Widgets” on page 26 . Managing Applications The Apps screen displays all applications installed on your device, including apps you download and install. From Apps, you can change th e way apps appear on the screen and uninstall apps you have downloaded. When you install new apps, new screens are added to hold them. Downloading and Installing Apps Find new apps to download and install on your device: • Play Store : See page 110. • Samsung Hub : See page 114. 100
Updating Applications Once you have registered your device and signed into your Google account, you may see the Updates Available notification in the Notification Bar if there is a new version of one or more apps available or , when you open an application that is preloaded on your device, an Update Available message may be displayed. To update the applications: 1. Touch the top of the scr een and swipe downward. The Notification Panel displays. 2. Touch Updates available . Uninstalling and Disabling Apps You can uninstall apps you download and install on your device. Pre-loaded apps cannot be uninstalled, but some can be disabled. Note: Downloaded apps can only be uninstalled, not disabled. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. To u c h Menu ➔ Uninstall/disable apps . 3. Apps that can be uninstalle d or disabled show on their icon. Touch , and then follow the prompts to uninstall or disable the app. Applications 101
Customizing the Apps Screens Choosing a view By default, app icons appear in Grid view. You can change the view to list view. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. Touch Menu, and then touch View type. 3. Choose an option: • Customizable Grid : The default view, which allows you to touch and hold on apps to move them from screen to screen. • Alphabetical grid : Icons are arranged in a grid, in A-Z order. • Alphabetical list : Icons display in a list, sorted from A-Z. Apps Screen Options 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. To u c h Menu for these options: •Edit : Touch and hold an app icon then drag it to the Create folder icon to create a new folder. Drag it to the Create page icon to create a new apps screen and place the icon on it. Or drag it to App info to view information about this app. • Create folder : Create a new folder to hold shortcuts. • Uninstall/disable apps : Remove an app that you downloaded from your phone . Pre-loaded apps cannot be uninstalled, but some can be disabled. •View type : Configure the apps screen. • Show disabled apps : View any pre-loaded apps that are disabled. This option can only be selected if any pre-loaded apps are disabled. 3. To u c h Downloaded applications to display all apps you have downloaded. 102
Calculator With this feature, you can use the phone as a calculator. The calculator provides the basic arithmetic functions; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The Calculator also keeps a history of recent calculations. 1. Touch Apps ➔ Calculator . 2. Enter the first number using the onscreen numeric keys. 3. Enter the operation for your calculation by touching the corresponding onscreen ar ithmetic function key. 4. Enter the second number. 5. To view the result, touch equals ( =). 6. To view calculator history, touch located at the top of the calculator buttons. A history of your past calculations displays. Touch again to display the calculator keypad. 7. To clear the calculator history, touch Menu ➔ Clear history . Tip: Turn your phone sideways to the landscape position to display the scientific calculator. Calendar Your device includes a powerful Calendar feature. You can consult the calendar by day, week, or month, create events, and set an alarm to act as a reminder, if necessary. To access the Calendar: 1. To u c h Apps ➔ Calendar . 2. The following tabs are available on the right side of the display: •Year : Display the Year view. •Month : Display the Month view. • Week: Display the Week view. •Day : Display the Day view. •List : Display the List view. •Task : Search for tasks. 3. Touch Menu for options: •Go to : Display a specific date. • Delete: Delete All events, All eve nts before today, or an individual event. •Search : Search within your current events. •Sync : Synchronize your calendar with one or all of your accounts. This option only appears when an account has been opened. • Calendars : Display various information such as My calendars, My task, your li nked accounts, and Contact’s birthdays. •Settings : Displays a list of calendar settings. Camera Use your 8 megapixel camera feature to produce photos in a JPEG format. Your phone also functions as a camcorder to record videos. � To u c h Apps ➔ Camera . Clock The Clock application allows you to access alarms, view the World Clock, set a stopwatch, and use a timer. � To u c h Apps ➔ Clock: The Clock application includes these features: • Alarm : Create alarms to go off once, or to repeat. • World clock : Display the time and date in any time zone. • Stopwatch: Record lap times. • Timer: Measure elapsed time. • Desk clock : Display the date and time in large format for easy viewing.
