The play list is displayed. Press again to clear the play list. 2Move the joystick [ , ] to select the play list you want to watch. If you press [ENTER] or select a play list with the numbered buttons, all the scenes in the play list are played from the beginning. 3Move the joystick [] to select “Con- tents” on the right side of the list and press [ENTER]. 4Move the joystick [ , ] to select “Scene List” and press [ENTER]. 5Move the joystick [ , , ,] to se- lect the scene you want to watch and press [ENTER]. The scene starts playing. You cannot move the highlighting to places where a scene is not displayed. If there are more than 9 scenes in the play list, move the joystick [ , , ,] to select “Next” and press [ENTER]. You can move back to the previous page by selecting “Prev”. You can also select a page of play list scenes by entering the page number with the numbered buttons. (The page numbers appear at the bottom center of the screen.) To repeat only your favorite tracks 1. Program the tracks you want (➡ page 18). 2. Press [] (play). Play will start. 3. Press [REPEAT MODE] to display “ T” or “ A” . BA-B repeat play You can repeat a section between points A and B within a program, title, or track. 1During play Press [A-B REPEAT] at the starting point (A). 2Press [A-B REPEAT] at the finishing point (B). To cancel Press [A-B REPEAT] until “” is displayed. Note A-B repeat does not work if the DVD’s elapsed play time is not shown on the unit’s display. Some subtitles recorded around point A or B may fail to appear. The unit automatically determines the end of a program/title/track as point B when the end of the program/title/track is reached. Turn off the surround sound effects on the equipment you have connected when using this effect. Turn Advanced Surround off if it causes distortion. Output from this unit will be in stereo (two channels) when V.S.S. is on. BImproving CD sound— RE-MASTER The re-master feature uses advanced digital signal processing to improve the quality of standard 44.1 kHz/16 bit CD audio. By digital- ly converting the original signal to 88.2 kHz/24 bit, audio quality is improved and approaches the quality of DVD-Audio. There are 3 modes, each suited for a different music type. Press [RE-MASTER].Each time you press the button: RE-MASTER 1:Sharp acoustic imaging. Best suited for pop and rock. RE-MASTER 2:High clarity sound. Best suited for jazz. RE-MASTER 3:Smooth and full sound: Best suited for classi- cal music. RE-MASTER OFF:Original audio quality. Note If you have connected equipment digitally, ensure your equipment can handle digital signals with sampling frequencies of 88.2 kHz and Digital Audio Output is set to “On (RE-MASTER On)” (➡ page 31, Audio—Digital Audio Output). Some equipment cannot handle sampling frequencies of 88.2 kHz, even if they can handle 96 kHz. Read your equipment’s operating instructions for details. CChanging the sound quality— DIGITAL FILTER Press [DIGITAL FILTER].Each time you press the button: Nor.:Normal sound quality. Select this mode for normal use. Advanced operations RQT5741 24 Changing soundtracks, subtitle languages and angles Remote control only Some DVDs have multiple soundtracks, subtitle languages and camera angles, and you can change these during play. ASoundtracks During play Press [AUDIO].The number changes each time you press the button. Play restarts from the beginning of the soundtrack when playing DVD-Audio and DVD-RAM soundtracks that are accompanied by still pictures. Even if a second soundtrack isn’t recorded on a DVD-Audio, two soundtrack numbers will normally be shown when you press [AUDIO]. The soundtrack currently playing is number 1. You can also use this button to turn the vocals on and off on karaoke discs. Read the disc’s instructions for details. BSubtitles With DVD-Audio and DVD-Video you can change the subtitle number and turn the subtitles on and off. With DVD-RAM you can turn the subtitles on and off. During play Press [SUBTITLE]. The number changes each time you press the button. To clear/display the subtitles 1. Press [SUBTITLE]. 2. Move the joystick []. (DVD-Audio and DVD-Video only) 3. Move the joystick [,] to select “ON” or “OFF”. CAngles During play Press [ANGLE].The number changes each time you press the button. Notes regarding soundtracks, subtitle languages and angles You can also move the joystick [, ] or use the numbered buttons to change the soundtracks, subtitle languages and angles. Some discs allow changes to soundtracks, subtitle lan- guages and angles only by using the disc’s menus. Soundtrack and subtitle languages can be set before play (➡ page 31, Disc — Audio and Subtitle). “–” or “– –” is displayed instead of the language number in circumstances such as when no language is recorded on the disc. Some discs allow you to set angles before multi-angle scenes are played. Read the instructions that come with the DVD. In some cases, the subtitle language is not changed to the selected one immediately. If the subtitles overlap closed captions recorded on discs, turn the subtitles off. For your reference Depending on the condition of the unit (playing, stopped, etc.) and the type of software you are playing, there are some items that you cannot select or change. When numbers are displayed (e.g. title No.), the numbered buttons are also effective for setting. When numbers are entered with the numbered buttons, press [ENTER] to register the setting. To clear the icons Press [RETURN] until the menus disappear. To change the position of the icons You can lower the position of the icons on the screen if they are cut off for some reason. There are 5 positions to choose from. 1. Move the joystick [,] to select the rightmost icon. 2. Move the joystick [, ] to move the icons. Numbered buttons e.g. DVD-Video You can also use the professional commander for simple control of some items in the Audio, Display, and Video menus. These are indicat- ed with the icon (➡ pages 27, 28 and 29). 1. Press the buttons on the professional commander. The icons appear. The corresponding Video menu icon appears already highlighted. 2. Press [, ] to select the setting. The icons disappear after about five seconds. To restore Video icon settings to the factory settings Press [DEFAULT] while the icon is highlighted. PC

V sharpness (1 to 2) Adjusts the sharpness of the edges of the horizontal lines. Edge (3 to 0) Improves edges in the background to reduce overshooting and improve the sense of depth. TINT (15 to 15) Changes the overall tint of the picture. Gamma (0 to 5) Increases the brightness of the center ranges to improve detail and contrast in dark scenes. U1:Common picture adjustments IconContent 3D-NR (0 to 4) Reduces overall noise. Block NR (0 to 3) Smoothes block noise. Mosquito NR (0 to 3) Reduces the smudging that appears around contrasting sections of the picture. Background NR (0 to 7) Reduces the rough noise in the background. Dot Crawl Cancel (0 to 3) Removes the “dot crawl” phenomena that is apparent around the borders between colors when playing discs made from composite material [material where the Y (luminance) and C (color) signals have not been separated]. U2:Reducing picture noise 0 0 : indicates items that can also be changed with the professional commander. For your reference The unit saves the settings you make with the user mode for each disc so when you play a disc again and select a user mode, the same settings are selected. Discs you play for the first time use the previous settings. The unit can save settings for up to 200 discs. Auto 1 (normal):for viewing film material Auto 2:for viewing film material (the same as Auto 1, but able to convert 30-frame per second progressive video) Auto 3:for animated material (also able to convert 30-frame per second progressive video) Video:for video material 4:3 ASPECT Selects how to show video on a widescreen (16:9) television that is compatible with progressive output. These settings are retained in memory until they are changed, even if the unit is turned off.
