273 U NThe Retouch Menu: Creating Retouched Copies To display the retouch menu, press G and select the N (retouch menu) tab. The options in the retouch menu are used to create trimmed or retouched copies of existing pictures. The retouch menu is only displayed when a memory card containing photographs is inse rted in the camera (note that if the memory card is being used to store both RAW/NEF and JP EG copies of the same photographs as described on page 66 , retouch other than Image overlay and NEF (RAW) processing apply only to the JPEG copies). 1 Can only be selected by pressing G and selecting N tab. 2Only available if P is pressed in full-frame playback when a retouched image or original is displayed. Options that can not be applied to the current image are grayed out and unavailable. AImage Quality Except in the case of copies created with Tr i m, Image overlay , NEF (RAW) processing , and Resize , copies created from JPEG images are the sa me size and quality as the original, while copies created from NEF (RAW ) photos are saved as large fine-quality JPEG images. Size- priority compression is used when copies are saved in JPEG format.
274 U Creating Retouched Copies To c r e a t e a r e t o u c h e d c o p y : 1Select an item in the retouch menu. Press 1 or 3 to highlight an item, 2 to select. 2Select a picture. Highlight a picture and press J (to view the highlighted picture full screen, press and hold the X (T ) button; to view images in other locations as described on page 186, hold D and press 1). 3Select retouch options. For more information, see the section for the selected item. To exit without creating a retouched copy, press G. 4Create a retouched copy. Press J to create a retouched copy. Retouched copies are indicated by a o icon. ARetouch The camera may not be able to display or retouch images created with other devices. AMonitor off Delay The monitor will turn off and the operation will be cancelled if no actions are performed for a brief period. Any unsaved changes will be lost. To increase the time the monitor remains on, choose a longer menu display time for Custom Setting c4 ( Monitor off delay ; 0 238).

276 U D-lighting brightens shadows, making it ideal for dark or backlit photographs. Press 1 or 3 to choose the amount of correction performed. The effect can be previewed in the edit display. Press J to copy the photograph. This option is used to correct “red-eye” caus ed by the flash, and is available only with photographs taken using the flash. The photograph selected for red-eye correction can be previewed in the edit display. Confirm the effects of red-eye correction and create a copy as described in the following table. Note that red-eye correction may not always produce the expected results and may in very rare circumstances be applied to portions of the image that are not affected by red-eye; check the preview thoroughly before proceeding. No copy will be created if the camera is unable to detect red-eye.
277 U Create a cropped copy of the selected photograph. The selected photograph is displayed with the selected crop shown in yellow; create a cropped copy as described in the following table. Copy photographs in Black-and-white, Sepia , or Cyanotype (blue and white monochrome). Selecting Sepia or Cyanotype displays a preview of the selected image; press 1 to increase color saturation, 3 to decrease. Press J to create a monochrome copy. Change crop aspect ratio Rotate the main command dial to switch between aspect ratios of 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 1:1, and 16:9. Position crop Use multi selector to position the crop. Press and hold to move the crop rapidly to the desired position. Create copy JSave the current crop as a separate file. ATrim: Image Quality and Size Copies created from NEF (RAW ) or NEF (RAW ) + JPEG photos have an image quality ( 066) of JPEG fine; cropped copies created from JPEG photos have the same image quality as the original. The size of the copy varies with crop size and aspect ratio and appears at upper left in the crop display. 278 U Choose from the following filter effects. After adjusting filter effects as described below, press J to copy the photograph. Filter EffectsG button ➜Nretouch menu OptionDescription Skylight Creates the effect of a skylight filter, making the picture less blue. The effect can be previewed in the monitor as shown at right. Warm filter Creates a copy with warm tone filter effects, giving the copy a “warm” red cast. The effect can be previewed in the monitor. Red intensifier Intensify reds ( Red intensifier ), greens (Green intensifier ), or blues (Blue intensifier ). Press 1 to increase the effect, 3 to decrease. Green intensifier Blue intensifier Cross screen Add starburst effects to light sources. • Number of points : Choose from four, six, or eight. • Filter amount : Choose the brightness of the light sources affected. • Filter angle : Choose the angle of the points. • Length of points : Choose the length of points. • Confirm : Preview the effects of the filter as shown at right. Press X (T ) to preview the copy full frame. • Save : Create a retouched copy. Soft Add a soft filter effect. Press 1 or 3 to choose the filter strength.
279 U Use the multi selector to create a copy with modified color balance as shown below. The effect is displayed in the monitor together with red, green, and blue histograms ( 0189) giving the distribution of tones in the copy. The histogram will be updated to show data only for the portion of the image displayed in the monitor. While the image is zoomed in, press L (U ) to toggle back and forth between color balance and zoom. When zoom is selected, you can zoom in and out with the X (T ) and W (S ) and scroll the image with the multi selector.
280 U Image overlay combines two existing NEF (RAW ) photographs to create a single picture that is saved separately from the originals; the results, which make use of RAW data from the camera image sensor, are notice ably better than overlays created in an imaging application. The new picture is saved at current image quality and size settings; before creating an over lay, set image quality and size (066, 68; all options are available). To create a NEF (RAW ) copy, choose an image quality of NEF (RAW). 1Select Image overlay . Highlight Image overlay in the retouch menu and press 2. The dialog shown at right will be displayed, with Image 1 highlighted; press J to display a list of the NEF pictures created with this camera. 2Select the first image. Use the multi selector to highlight the first photograph in the overlay. To view the highlighted photograph full frame, press and hold the X (T ) button (to view images in other locations as described on page 186, hold D and press 1). Press J to select the highlighted photograph and return to the preview display. 3Select the second image. The selected image will appear as Image 1. Highlight Image 2 and press J, then select the second photo as described in Step 2. Image OverlayG button ➜Nretouch menu +
281 U 4Adjust gain. Highlight Image 1 or Image 2 and optimize exposure for the overlay by pressing 1 or 3 to select gain from values between 0.1 and 2.0. Repeat for the second image. The default value is 1.0; select 0.5 to halve gain or 2.0 to double it. The effects are visible in the Preview column. 5Preview the overlay. Press 4 or 2 to place the cursor in the Preview column and press 1 or 3 to highlight Overlay. Press J to preview the overlay as shown at right (to save the overlay without displaying a preview, select Save). To return to Step 4 and select new photos or adjust gain, press W (S ). 6Save the overlay. Press J while the preview is displayed to save the overlay. After an overlay is created, the resulting image will be displayed full-frame in the monitor. DImage Overlay Only NEF (RAW ) photographs with the same image area and bit depth can be combined. The overlay has the same photo info (including date of recording, metering, shutter speed, aperture, shooting mode, exposure compensati on, focal length, and image orientation), and values for white balance and Picture Control as the photograph selected for Image 1. The current image comment is appended to the overlay when it is saved; copyright information, however, is not copied. Overlays saved in NEF (RAW ) format use the compression selected for Ty p e in the NEF (RAW ) recording menu and have the same bit depth as the original images; JPEG overlays are saved using size-priority compression.
282 U Create JPEG copies of NEF (RAW ) photographs. 1Select NEF (RAW) processing . Highlight NEF (RAW) processing in the retouch menu and press 2 to display a picture selection dialog listing only NEF (RAW ) images created with this camera. 2Select a photograph. Highlight a photograph (to view the highlighted photograph full frame, press and hold the X ( T ) button; to view images in other locations as described on page 186, hold D and press 1). Press J to select the highlighted photograph and proceed to the next step. 3Choose settings for the JPEG copy. Adjust the settings listed below. Note that white balance is not available with multiple exposures or pictures created with image overlay and that exposure compensation can only be set to values between –2 and +2 EV. The Picture Control grid is not displayed when Picture Controls are adjusted.
