Press 1 or 3 to highlight a folder. 3Select the highlighted folder. Press J to select the highlighted folder and return to the shooting menu. Subsequent photographs will be stored in the selected folder. Photographs are saved using file names consisting of “DSC_” or, in the case of images that use the Adobe RGB color space, “_DSC”, followed by a four-digit number and a three-letter extension (e.g., “DSC_0001.JPG”). The File naming option is used to select three letters to replace the “DSC” portion of the file name. For information on editing file names, see page 111. File NamingG button ➜Cshooting menu AExtensions The following extensions are used: “.NEF” for NEF (RAW ) images, “.JPG” for JPEG images, “.MOV” for movies, and “.NDF” for dust off reference data. In each pair of photographs recorded at image-quality settings of NEF (RAW ) + JPEG, the NEF and JPEG images have the same file names but different extensions.
227 U The color space determines the gamut of colors available for color reproduction. Choose sRGB for photographs that will be printe d or used “as is,” with no further modification. Adobe RGB has a wider color gamut and is recommended for images that will be extensively processed or retouched after leaving the camera. Select On to reduce barrel distortion when shooting with wide- angle lenses and to reduce pin-cushion distortion when shooting with long lenses (note that the edges of the area visible in the viewfinder may be cropped out of the final photograph, and that the time needed to process photographs before recording begins may increase). This option does not apply to movies and is available only with type G and D lenses (PC, fisheye, and certain other lenses excluded); results are not guaranteed with other lenses. Color SpaceG button ➜Cshooting menu AColor Space Color spaces define the correspondence between colors and the numeric values that represent them in a digital image file. The sRGB color space is widely used, while the Adobe RGB color space is typically used in publishing and commercial printing. sRGB is recommended when taking photographs that will be printed without modification or viewed in applications that do not support color management, or when taking photographs that will be printed with ExifPrint, the direct printing option on some household printers, or kiosk printing or other commercial print services. Adobe RGB photographs can also be printed using these options, but colors will not be as vivid. JPEG photographs taken in the Adobe RGB color space are DCF compliant; applications and printers that support DCF will select the correct color space automatically. If the application or device does not support DCF, select the appropriate color space manually. For more information, see the documentation prov ided with the application or device. ANikon Software ViewNX 2 (supplied) and Capture NX 2 (available separately) automatically select the correct color space when opening photographs created with this camera. Auto Distortion ControlG button ➜Cshooting menu ARetouch: Distortion Control For information on creating copies of existi ng photographs with reduced barrel and pin- cushion distortion, see page 285.
228 U If On is selected, photographs taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 s will be processed to reduce noise (bright spots, randomly-spaced bright pixels, or fog). The time required for processing roughly double s; during processing, “lm” will flash in the shutter speed/aperture displays and pictures can not be taken (if the camera is turned off before processing is complete, the picture will be saved but noise reduction will not be performed). In continuous release mode, frame rates will slow and while phot ographs are being processed, the capacity of the memory buffer will drop. Long exposure noise reduction is not available during movie recording. Photographs taken at high ISO sensitivitie s can be processed to reduce “noise.” Long Exposure NR (Long Exposure Noise Reduction)G button ➜Cshooting menu High ISO NRG button ➜Cshooting menu OptionDescription High Reduce noise (randomly-spaced bright pi xels, lines, or fog), particularly in photographs taken at high ISO sensitivities. Choose the amount of noise reduction performed from High, Normal , and Low. Normal Low Off Noise reduction is only performed at ISO sensitivities of ISO 1250 and higher. The amount of noise reduction is less than the amount performed when Low is selected for High ISO NR .

When AF-C is selected for viewfinder photography ( 071), this option controls whether photographs can be taken whenever the shutter-release button is pressed ( release priority ) or only when the camera is in focus ( focus priority). Regardless of the option selected, focus will not lock when AF-C is selected for autofocus mode. The camera will continue to adjust focus until the shutter is released. When AF-S is selected for viewfinder photography ( 071), this option controls whether photographs can be taken only when the camera is in focus ( focus priority) or whenever the shutter-release button is pressed ( release priority).
