They help you use this book with your DEFINITY system. nTo “move” to a certain field, you can use the TA B key, arrows, or the RETURN key. nA “screen” is a screen form displayed on the terminal monitor. nIn this book we always use the term phone; other Lucent books may refer to phones as voice terminals. nIf you use terminal emulation software, you need to determine which keys correspond to EN TER, RETURN, CANCEL, HELP, NEXT PAGE, etc. nCommands are printed in bold face as follows: command. nKeys and buttons are printed as follows: KEY. nScreen displays are printed in constant width as follows: screen display. nVariables are printed in italics as follows: variable. nWe show complete commands in this book, but you can always use an abbreviated version of the command. For example, list configuration station can be entered as list config sta . nWe show commands and screens from the newest DEFINITY system and refer to the most current books. Please substitute the appropriate commands for your system and refer to the manuals you have available.
Welcome xii How to use this book DEFINITY System’s Little Instruction Book for basic administration 555-233-756 Issue 1 April 2000 nIf you need help constructing a command or completing a field entry, remember to use HELP. — When you press HELP at any point on the command line, a list of available commands appears. — When you press HELP with your cursor in a field on a screen, a list of valid entries for that field appears. nThe status line or message line can be found near the bottom of your monitor display. This is where the system displays messages for you. Check the message line to see how the system responds to your input. Write down the message if you need to call our helpline. nWhen a procedure requires you to press EN TER to save your changes, the screen you were working on clears and the cursor returns to the command prompt. The message line shows “ command successfully completed” to indicate that the system accepted your changes. It also explains how to log in to your telephone system, change the date and time, save changes to the system, and log off. Overview of DEFINITY systems Your DEFINITY telephone system organizes and routes voice, data, image, and video transmissions. Your system can be connected to communications paths that transmit voice and data signals between the phone system and a central office, and to other public and private networks. The following figure shows typical DEFINITY system connections, software packages, and additional hardware. To find more detailed information and a comprehensive overview of your DEFINITY system, refer to your DEFINITY ECS Overview.
