152Should You Repair or Replace a Tire? If You Have a Flat Tire Taking Care of the Unexpected Inflate the tire: Plug the hole:Tubeless tires have some self -sealing ability if they are punctured and the result is usually just a slow leak. If this is the case, you can try inf lating the tire to see if it will hold air pressure. If you can see a nail or other object embedded in the tire tread, do not remove it at this time. Theideahereistodo something to temporarily stop the leak. If you have a tubeless tire repair kit, you can pull out the nail and try insertinganexternalpluginthe puncture. Follow the instructions that came with the repair kit and be sure to inf late the tire to the correct pressure. We strongly recommend that you replace, not permanently repair, any tire that is punctured or damaged, even if the tire has only a minor puncture. For a f ull discussion of repairs and replacement, see page .119 03/03/07 13:21:01 31MEM600_161

160 If Your Engine Overheats Taking Care of the Unexpected Continuing to ride with an overheated engine can cause serious engine damage. Normally, the temperature of the coolant in the cooling system will rise to a level about midway between cold and boiling. Hot weather may cause the temperature to rise higher than normal. So will temporary stress such as climbing a hill. If you’re stuck in stop-and-go traf f ic, the temperature may climb some, but the radiator f an is designed to prevent overheating. Be aware of these variations. If the coolant temperature indicator (page ) comes on f or no apparent reason, pull saf ely to the side of the road. If possible, park in a shady area.A steaming engine indicates a coolant leak. Shut the engine of f and wait until the steaming stops. Look f or a leak, but don’t touch the engine or radiator system. Let everything cool of f f irst. If there’s no obvious problem, leave the engine on so the f an and coolant circulating system can continue working. Monitor the temperature indicator. The indicator may turn of f after a brief stop with no load on the engine. 13 03/03/07 13:22:19 31MEM600_169
161 If Your Engine Overheats Taking Care of the Unexpected If the reserve tank is low or empty, don’t ride without adding coolant (page ). Af ter adding coolant, turn the engine on and check the temperature indicator. If the indicator doesn’t turn of f , do not ride. The engine needs repair. Transportyour motorcycle to a Honda dealer (page ). If the temperature drops to normal, check the coolant level. If it has gone down, add more coolant. If you are able to resume riding, continue to monitor the temperature indicator f requently. If there’s a mild leak, you can ride f or awhile, carefully watching the indicator. Be prepared to stop and add more coolant or water. If the leak is bad, transport your motorcycle to a Honda dealer (page ). Check the radiator fan. If the f an is not working, turn the engine of f . Open the f use box (page ) and check the radiator fan fuse. If the f use is blown, replace it with the proper (same rating) spare f use. Start the engine. If the temperature indicator comes on and stays on, turn the engine off. If the radiator f an is working, visually check the coolant level in the reserve tank, located just behind the crankcase. It isn’t necessary to touch the radiator system.140 140 163 90 03/03/07 13:22:26 31MEM600_170
