    Air Cleaner
    Servicing Your Honda
    Saf ety Precautions
    Using the wrong air cleaner may result in
    premature engine damage.Improper or lack of proper air cleaner
    maintenance can cause poor perf ormance
    and premature engine wear. Refer to on page .
    Service the air cleaner more frequently if
    you ride in unusually wet or dusty areas.
    Your Honda dealer can help you
    determine the correct service interval f or
    your riding conditions.
    Your motorcycle’s air cleaner has very
    specif ic perf ormance requirements. Use a
    new genuine Honda air cleaner specified
    f or your model or an air cleaner of
    equivalent quality.Proper air cleaner maintenance can
    prevent premature engine wear or damage,
    expensive repairs, low engine power, poor
    gas mileage, and spark plug f ouling. 56

    Remove the f ive bolts (1), and remove
    the air cleaner housing cover (2).
    Remove the air cleaner (3).
    Discard the air cleaner.
    Thoroughly clean the inside of the air
    cleaner case (4).
    Install a new air cleaner.
    Install the removed parts in reverse
    order of removal. 1.

    Service the crankcase breather more
    f requently if your motorcycle is ridden in
    the rain or often at full throttle. Service the
    breather if you can see deposits in the
    transparent section of the drain tube.
    Place a drain pan under the crankcase
    breather tube plug ( ).
    Remove the plug to drain the deposits in
    the tube.
    Reinstall the crankcase breather tube
    plug. 1.

    on a firm, level surface.
    Remove the oil filler cap ( ).
    Check the oil level. It should be f lush
    with the lower edge of the oil f iller hole
    ().
    If the level is low, check for leaks. Add
    the recommended oil through the oil
    filler hole until it reaches the lower
    edge of the opening.

    on a firm, level surface.
    Place a drain pan under the drain bolt
    ().
    Remove the oil filler cap ( ) and the
    drain bolt.
    Af ter the oil has completely drained,
    check that the sealing washer ( ) is in
    good condition. Reinstall the drain bolt
    with its sealing washer (or a new
    washer, if necessary) and tighten it to
    the specified torque:
    Change the oil with the f inal drive at
    normal operating temperature to assure
    complete and rapid draining.Fill the f inal drive with the
    recommended oil:
    Make sure the f inal drive oil level is at
    the lower edge of the oil f iller
    inspection hole ( ).
    Install the oil f iller cap. 1.

    Freeplay:
    If necessary, adjust to the specif ied range.
    Adjustment
    Loosen the lock nut ( ).
    Turn the adjuster ( ).
    After adjustment, check for smooth
    rotation of the throttle grip f rom f ully
    closed to fully open in all steering

    Tighten the upper lock nut and check

    Lower Adjustment Loosen the upper lock nut ( ) and turn
    the upper clutch cable adjuster ( ) all
    the way in (to provide maximum
    f reeplay). Tighten the upper lock nut.
    Loosen the lower lock nut ( ).
    Turn the lower adjusting nut ( ) to
    obtain the specified freeplay.
    Tighten the lower lock nut and check
    the adjustment. If the upper clutch cable adjuster is
    threaded out near its limit –– or the correct
    f reeplay cannot be obtained –– attempt
    adjustment with the lower clutch cable
    adjuster.
