Notes • If the problem remains, replace the Ink Tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 71. • If Ink Tank replacement does not resolve the problem, the Print Head may be worn out. Contact a Canon service representative. „Aligning the Print Head If print quality is poor, adjust the Print Head position. It may solve the problem. 1Prepare to print. (1) Turn on the printer. See “Turning On the Printer” on page 16. (2) Load the supplied paper or Canon 4"×6"/ 101.6×152.4mm paper into the Paper Support. See “Loading Paper” on page 20. 2Print the Pattern. (1) Press the Menu button. (2) Use the WX buttons to select To o l b o x and then press the OK button. (3) Use the WX buttons to select Maintenance and then press the OK button. (4) Use theST buttons to select Manual head align and then press the OK button. The pattern print confirmation screen is displayed. (5) Select Ye s and then press the OK button. The pattern is printed. (6) When the confirmation message is displayed, selectYe s and then press the OK button.

(2) Press the T button to move the cursor on the column B and select the most even, least irregular patterns and use the WX buttons to select the number that corresponds. Repeat the operation for the column C and D. (3) Press the OK button. The Print Head position is adjusted. Note Printing a current setting of the Print Head position 1Turn on the printer. The pattern print confirmation screen is displayed. 7 Select Ye s and then press the OK button. The Head alignment value is printed. (1) Look at the print out. From the patterns on the column A, select the most even, least irregular patterns and use the WX buttons to select the number that corresponds.
Printing Maintenance 71 Replacing an Ink Tank When replacing an Ink Tank, check the model number very carefully. The printer will not print properly if the wrong Ink Tank is used. • Ink Tank: BCI-16 Color „Replacing an Ink Tank When an Ink Tank runs out of ink, replace it using the following steps. 1Ensure that the printer is on. 2Open the Cover. 3Remove the empty Ink Tank. (1) Slide the Cover Open Switch toward the right to open the Cover. The Print Head Holder moves to the center. (1) Push the tab. (2) Remove the Ink Tank. Important • Handle Ink Tanks carefully to avoid staining clothing or the surrounding area. • Discard empty Ink Tanks according to the local laws and regulations regarding disposal of consumables.
Printing Maintenance 72 4Prepare a replacement Ink Tank. 5Insert the Ink Tank. 6Close the Cover. The Print Head Holder moves to the right. Important Be sure to reset the ink counter using the following procedure when changing the Ink Ta n k . Notes • To maintain optimal print quality, use an Ink Tank within six months of its first use. • Once an Ink Tank has been used, do not remove it from the printer and leave it out in the open. This will cause the Ink Tank to dry out and the printer may not function properly if it is reinstalled. • Color ink is consumed in the cleaning and deep cleaning, which are necessary to maintain the printer’s capabilities. • When an Ink Tank runs out of ink, replace the Ink Tank with a new one immediately. • If printing is continued with no ink in the Ink Tank, a problem may occur. (1) Unpack a new Ink Tank and remove the orange protective cap. Dispose of the protective cap. Important • Do not reattach the protective cap once you have removed it. • Once the protective cap is removed, do not touch the open ink port. (1) Set a new Ink Tank with it slightly slanted aligning the X mark with the W mark. (2) Push down on the on the Ink Tank until it clicks into place.
Printing Maintenance 73 „Resetting the Ink Counter When an Ink Tank is replaced, the ink counter must be reset. The low ink warning is only displayed properly if the ink counter is reset. Message Prompting Confirmation of Ink Tank Replacement If an Ink Tank is removed, the printer will output a message prompting you to confirm replacement of the Ink Tank at the start of the next print job. When an Ink Tank has been replaced, follow the procedure below to reset the ink counter. The low ink warning is only displayed properly if the ink counter is reset. 1Reset the ink counter. Note To reset the ink counter from To o l b o x 1Press the Menu button. 2 Select To o l b o x and then press the OK button. 3 Select Device settings and then press the OK button . 4 Select Other settings and then press the OK button. 5 Select Ink counter reset and then press the OK button. The Ink counter reset confirmation screen is displayed. 6 Select Ye s and then press the OK button. „How Low Ink Warning Works The low ink warning notifies you of low ink levels during printing. The Low Ink Warning has been preset to be automatically displayed. When you reset the ink counter, it will assume that the Ink Tank is full regardless of how much ink actually remains. The reset is the only way to match the counter value with an actual ink volume. Reset the ink counter when installing a new Ink Tank. (1) Check the message, select Ye s and then press the OK button. This returns the ink level of the ink counter full. If you select No after replacing the Ink Tank, selectInk counter reset from To o l b o x to reset the ink counter. Failing to reset the ink counter may result in the low ink warning displaying incorrectly.
Printing Maintenance 74 Low Ink Warning Display How to Display Low Ink Warning Correctly • Reset the ink counter every time you install a new Ink Tank. The ink counter cannot work correctly unless you synchronize it with the actual ink level. The ink counter can only be adjusted when it is reset at the time a new Ink Tank is installed. • Do not reset the ink counter of an Ink Tank in use. Synchronization of the counter and the actual ink level will not work properly. The '!' shows a low ink level in the Ink Tank. A new Ink Tank should be prepared. Important If you did not reset the counter when you installed the current Ink Tank, the low ink warning may not function correctly, until the next time you replace the Ink Tank. Refer to “Accompanied by Ink Tank icon with '?'” on page 76.
Troubleshooting 75 Troubleshooting Let's take a look at countermeasures against problems which may occur during use of the printer. Note Here, we will discuss errors indicated on the LCD, problems that might occur during direct printing from the digital camera. If you cannot find the symptom corresponding to a certain problem, refer to the User’s Guide. • “An Error Message is Displayed on the LCD” on page 75 • “Cannot See the Display Properly on the LCD/Cannot See the Display on the LCD” on page 77 • “Paper Does Not Feed Properly/Paper Jam” on page 77 • “Printing is Blurred/Colors are Wrong/White Streaks appear” on page 78 • “Printed Surface is Scratched or Ink Blots” on page 79 • “Cannot Print Properly from the Digital Camera” on page 81 • “Cannot Install the Printer Driver” on page 83 • “Cannot Print Properly through Wireless Communication” on page 84 An Error Message is Displayed on the LCD If a message is displayed on the LCD, take the corresponding countermeasure described below. Message/ErrorTr y This There are no photos in memory card.• Photo data edited/processed on the computer should be printed from the computer, not from the camera. • There is no proper data in the memory card. See “Memory Cards Supported by this Printer” on page 17. Ink tank replaced? • If the Ink Tank has been replaced with a new one. SelectYe s to reset the ink counter. See “Resetting the Ink Counter” on page 73. • If the Ink Tank has been removed for a certain period (the Ink Tank has not been replaced) SelectNo on the dialog box described above. The waste ink absorber is almost full.The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber to hold the ink used during Print Head Cleaning, for example. This error message indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the OK button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. However, because printing is disabled once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full until the waste ink absorber is replaced, you are recommended to contact a Canon service representative as early as possible. (You will need to replace a particular part of the printer.)
Troubleshooting 76 Note Accompanied by Ink Tank icon with '?' Always be sure to reset the ink counter when you replace Ink Tank. See “Resetting the Ink Counter” on page 73. A “?” is displayed next to the Ink counter between the time one Ink Tank is removed and the ink counter is reset when the next one is installed. Display of the “?” can be disabled by changing the settings on Low ink warning. 1Press the Menu button. 2 Select To o l b o x and then press the OK button. 3 Select Device settings and then press the OK button. 4 Select Other settings and press the OK button. 5 Select Low ink warning and then press the OK button. The confirmation screen is displayed. 6 Select Hide and then press the OK button. Incompatible device detected.Disconnect the camera cable and reconnect it. Depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a print mode compliant with PictBridge before connecting the device. You may also have to turn on the device or select Play mode manually after connecting the device to the printer. Perform necessary operations according to the instruction manual supplied with your device. If the error is still unresolved, there is a possibility that you are using a digital camera or digital video camcorder that is not supported by this printer. Use a digital camera or digital video camcorder compatible with this printer. **** Error code An error requiring servicing might have occurred. (POWER lamp and Alarm lamp flash alternately.) Disconnect the printer cable from the printer, and then turn the printer off and unplug the printer from the power supply. Plug the printer back in and turn the printer back on after leaving it for a while. If the problem remains, contact a Canon service representative. Message/ErrorTr y This The Ink Tank level accompanied by the Ink Tank icon with the “?” indicates Ink Tank is not synchronized with its ink counter.
Troubleshooting 77 Cannot See the Display Properly on the LCD/Cannot See the Display on the LCD Paper Does Not Feed Properly/Paper Jam Possible CauseTr y This Cannot see the display properly on the LCD/the display on the LCD is illegibleIf the LCD contrast is too strong or too weak, adjust the Adjust contrast setting in the To o l b o x. See “Adjust contrast” on page 43. Cannot see the display on the LCDThe LCD may be in sleep mode. Press the OK button to deactivate sleep mode. If you leave the printer more than five minutes without using any buttons on the operation panel, the LCD goes into sleep mode automatically. Possible CauseTr y This Inappropriate paper type usedCheck to see if the paper you are printing on is too thin or curled. See “Print Media to Avoid” on page 20. Paper Feed Roller is dirty Follow the steps described below to clean the Paper Feed Rollers. If post cards do not feed properly, even after correcting any paper curl, clean the Paper Feed Roller. 1. Ensure that the printer is turned on. 2. Load 3 sheets of Canon 4"×6"/101.6×152.4 mm paper with print side facing down. 3. Select Roller cleaning from the menu. •Press the Menu button. • Select To o l b o x and then press the OK button. • Select Maintenance and then press the OK button. • Select Roller cleaning and then press the OK button. 4. Select Ye s, and press the OK button. The printer loads the paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder, performs a cleaning operation and then ejects it. After ejecting the paper, the printer operates for a few minutes and stops. If the situation is not improved, repeat the same operation for a few times. Perform Roller cleaning only when necessary.
Troubleshooting 78 Printing is Blurred/Colors are Wrong/White Streaks appear Paper Jams(1)Slowly pull the paper out from the back of the printer or, from the front of the printer. • If the paper does not come out from the front of the printer or the back of the printer, or the paper tears and some of it is left in the printer, turn the printer off, then open the Cover and remove the piece of paper. Do not touch internal parts in the printer. • If you cannot extract the paper, turn the printer off, and then turn it back on. The remaining paper will be ejected automatically. (2)Close the Cover and reload the paper into the Paper Support, then press the OK button on the printer. • If you have turned on the power again at the step (1), redo the printing. • If you cannot reach or remove the torn paper, do not attempt to disassemble the printer by yourself. Contact a Canon service representative. Possible CauseTr y This Possible CauseTr y This Ink Tank is not installed If an Ink Tank is not installed, install it. If an Ink Tank is installed, push the PUSH mark on the Ink Tank to ensure it has snapped firmly into place. Media type is not selected properlyEnsure that the media type selected in the Settings screen is the same type as the media type loaded on the printer. See “To Change Print Setting” on page 24. Print Head Nozzles clogged/Print Head is misaligned Print the nozzle check pattern to check for uneven ink output.See “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 66. • When a specific color is missing from the nozzle check pattern, clean the Print Head. If ink supply is uneven: See “Print Head Cleaning” on page 67. • Print Head is misaligned. Align the Print Head. See “Aligning the Print Head” on page 69. If this does not solve the problem, Ink Tank may run out of ink. Replace the vacant Ink Tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 71. Media is not loaded with the print-side up Check that your paper is loaded with the correct print side facing up. See “Loading the Print Media” on page 21. Note Follow the instructions packaged with your specialty media for loading and handling.
